Helicopter rotor noise due to ingestion of atmospheric turbulence
A theoretical study was conducted to develop an analytical prediction method for helicopter main rotor noise due to the ingestion of atmospheric turbulence. This study incorporates an atmospheric turbulence model, a rotor mean flow contraction model and a rapid distortion turbulence model which together determine the statistics of the non-isotropic turbulence at the rotor plane. Inputs to the combined mean inflow and turbulence models are controlled by atmospheric wind characteristics and helicopter operating conditions. A generalized acoustic source model was used to predict the far field noise generated by the non-isotropic flow incident on the rotor. Absolute levels for acoustic spectra and directivity patterns were calculated for full scale helicopters, without the use of empirical or adjustable constants. Comparisons between isotropic and non-isotropic turbulence at the rotor face demonstrated pronounced differences in acoustic spectra. Turning and contraction of the flow for hover and low speed vertical ascent cases result in a 3 dB increase in the acoustic spectrum energy and a 10 dB increase in tone levels. Compared to trailing edge noise, turbulence ingestion noise is the dominant noise mechanism below approximately 30 rotor harmonics, while above 100 harmonics, trailing edge noise levels exceed turbulence ingestion noise by 25 dB
Submesoscale eddy and frontal instabilities in the Kuroshio interacting with a cape south of Taiwan

The definitive version was published in Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans 125(5), (2020): e2020JC016123, doi:10.1029/2020JC016123.The processes underlying the strong Kuroshio encountering a cape at the southernmost tip of Taiwan are examined with satelliteâderived chlorophyll and temperature maps, a drifter trajectory, and realistic model simulations. The interaction spurs the formation of submesoscale cyclonic eddies that trap cold and highâchlorophyll water and the formation of frontal waves between the free stream and the wake flow. An observed train of eddies, which have relative vorticity about one to four times the planetary vorticity (f), is shed from the recirculation that occurs in the immediate lee of the cape as a result of flow separation. These propagate downstream at a speed of 0.5â0.6 m sâ1. Farther downstream, the corotation and merging of two or three adjacent eddies are common owing to the topographyâinduced slowdown of eddy propagation farther downstream. It is found that the relative vorticity of a corotating system (1.2f) is 70% weaker than that of a single eddy due to the increase of eddy diameter from ~16 to ~33 km, in agreement with Kelvin's circulation theorem. The shedding period of the submesoscale eddies is strongly modulated by either diurnal or semidiurnal tidal flows, which typically reach 0.2â0.5 m sâ1, whereas its intrinsic shedding period is insignificant. The frontal waves predominate in the horizontal free shear layer emitted from the cape, as well as a density front. Stochastic forcing of the LambâOseen vortex
The aim of the present paper is to analyse the dynamics of the LambâOseen vortex when continuously forced by a random excitation. Stochastic forcing is classically used to mimic external perturbations in realistic configurations, such as variations of atmospheric conditions, weak compressibility effects, wing-generated turbulence injected in aircraft wake, or free-stream turbulence in wind tunnel experiments. The linear response of the LambâOseen vortex to stochastic forcing can be decomposed in relation to the azimuthal symmetry of the perturbation given by the azimuthal wavenumber m. In the axisymmetric case m = 0, we find that the response is characterised by the generation of vortex rings at the outer periphery of the vortex core. This result is consistent with recurrent observations of such dynamics in the study of vortex-turbulence interaction. When considering helical perturbations m = 1, the response at large axial wavelengths consists of a global translation of the vortex, a feature very similar to the phenomenon of vortex meandering (or wandering) observed experimentally, corresponding to an erratic displacement of the vortex core. At smaller wavelengths, we find that stochastic forcing can excite specific oscillating modes of the LambâOseen vortex. More precisely, damped critical-layer modes can emerge via a resonance mechanism. For perturbations with higher azimuthal wavenumber m > 2, we find no structure that clearly dominates the response of the vortex
Wake impacting on a horizontal axis wind turbine
Offshore wind is set to contribute a significant portion of the UKâs renewable energy production. In order to achieve this, installation costs must be reduced and energy density optimised, but this must be balanced with the increase in maintenance costs resulting from fatigue due to wake impact. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the effects of horizontal axis wind turbine wake impact on a downstream rotor.
A force-free wake implementation of the unsteady vortex lattice method has been developed in order to simulate the flow around the downstream rotor, including the effects of an upstream rotor wake, uncorrelated wind field and the dynamic inflow response of the turbine wake. In addition, a series of wind tunnel experiments were undertaken to characterise the wake of a horizontal axis wind turbine and measure time histories of the turbine thrust and blade root bending moments in uniform and turbulent inflow and upstream rotor wake impact.
Comparisons are made between the model and wind tunnel experiments for a range of flow cases: uniform inflow, turbulent inflow and operation in an upstream rotor wake at varying degrees of lateral offset. The upstream flow field is modelled on a Cartesian grid, following the assumption of frozen turbulence. For both the turbulent flow and upstream rotor wake, a simplified model is used as a starting point and then refined to better model the effect of turbulence.
Ambient turbulence is found to have minimal impact on the mean response of the rotor, suggesting that a linearised approach can be taken in the numerical modelling of turbulence effects. The simple model better predicts the low frequency response, but does not capture the per revolution frequencies identified by the refined model, which also better predicts the admittance.
The response of the rotor to an aligned upstream rotor wake is found to be dominated by the wake turbulence, although the proposed model does not reproduce the measured response. However, for laterally offset upstream rotor wakes the mean velocity deficit is the dominant factor and the model captures the response, including the shift to higher bending moment cycles which will contribute to increased fatigue.Open Acces

Stochastic particle advection velocimetry (SPAV): theory, simulations, and proof-of-concept experiments
Particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) is widely used to measure time-resolved,
three-dimensional velocity and pressure fields in fluid dynamics research.
Inaccurate localization and tracking of particles is a key source of error in
PTV, especially for single camera defocusing, plenoptic imaging, and digital
in-line holography (DIH) sensors. To address this issue, we developed
stochastic particle advection velocimetry (SPAV): a statistical data loss that
improves the accuracy of PTV. SPAV is based on an explicit particle advection
model that predicts particle positions over time as a function of the estimated
velocity field. The model can account for non-ideal effects like drag on
inertial particles. A statistical data loss that compares the tracked and
advected particle positions, accounting for arbitrary localization and tracking
uncertainties, is derived and approximated. We implement our approach using a
physics-informed neural network, which simultaneously minimizes the SPAV data
loss, a Navier-Stokes physics loss, and a wall boundary loss, where
appropriate. Results are reported for simulated and experimental DIH-PTV
measurements of laminar and turbulent flows. Our statistical approach
significantly improves the accuracy of PTV reconstructions compared to a
conventional data loss, resulting in an average reduction of error close to
50%. Furthermore, our framework can be readily adapted to work with other data
assimilation techniques like state observer, Kalman filter, and
adjoint-variational methods
