Comparative evaluation of research vs. Online MT systems
This paper reports MT evaluation experiments that were conducted at the end of year 1 of the EU-funded CoSyne
1 project for three language combinations, considering translations from German, Italian and Dutch into English. We present a comparative evaluation of the MT software developed within the project against four of the leading free webbased MT systems across a range of state-of-the-art automatic evaluation metrics. The data sets from the news domain that were created and used for training purposes and also for this evaluation exercise, which are available to the research community, are also described. The evaluation results for the news domain are very encouraging: the CoSyne MT software consistently beats the rule-based MT systems, and for translations from Italian and Dutch into English in particular the scores given by some of the standard automatic evaluation metrics are not too distant from those obtained by wellestablished statistical online MT systems

Object-oriented cohesion as a surrogate of software comprehension: An empirical study
The concept of software cohesion in both the procedural and object-oriented paradigm is well known and documented. What is not so well known or documented is the perception of what empirically constitutes a cohesive 'unit' by software engineers. In this paper, we describe an empirical investigation using object-oriented (OO) classes as a basis. Twenty-four subjects (drawn from IT experienced and IT inexperienced groups) were asked to rate ten classes sampled from two industrial systems in terms of their overall cohesiveness; a class environment was used to carry out the study. Four key results were observed. Firstly, class size (when expressed in terms of number of methods) did not tend to influence the perception of cohesion by any subjects. Secondly, well-commented classes were rated most highly amongst both IT experienced and inexperienced subjects. Thirdly, the empirical study suggests that cohesion comprises a combination of various class factors including low coupling, small numbers of attributes and well-commented methods, rather than any single, individual class feature per se. Finally, the research supports the view that cohesion is a subjective concept reflecting a cognitive combination of class features; as such it is a surrogate for class comprehension

The specification phase is one of the most important and least supported
parts of the software development process. The SAREL system has been
conceived as a knowledge-based tool to improve the specification phase.
The purpose of SAREL (Assistance System for Writing Software
Specifications in Natural Language) is to assist engineers in the
creation of software specifications written in Natural Language (NL).
These documents are divided into several parts. We can distinguish the
Introduction and the Overall Description as parts that should be used in
the Knowledge Base construction. The information contained in the
Specific Requirements Section corresponds to the information represented
in the Requirements Base. In order to obtain high-quality software
requirements specification the writing norms that define the linguistic
restrictions required and the software engineering constraints related
to the quality factors have been taken into account. One of the controls
performed is the lexical analysis that verifies the words belong to the
application domain lexicon which consists of the Required and the
Extended lexicon. In this sense a synonym management process is needed
in order to get a quality software specification. The aim of this paper
is to present the synonym management process performed during the
Knowledge Base construction. Such process makes use of the Spanish
Wordnet developed inside the Eurowordnet project. This process generates
both the Required lexicon and the Extended lexicon that will be used

An overview to Software Architecture in Intrusion Detection System
Today by growing network systems, security is a key feature of each network
infrastructure. Network Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) provide defense model
for all security threats which are harmful to any network. The IDS could detect
and block attack-related network traffic. The network control is a complex
model. Implementation of an IDS could make delay in the network. Several
software-based network intrusion detection systems are developed. However, the
model has a problem with high speed traffic. This paper reviews of many type of
software architecture in intrusion detection systems and describes the design
and implementation of a high-performance network intrusion detection system
that combines the use of software-based network intrusion detection sensors and
a network processor board. The network processor which is a hardware-based
model could acts as a customized load balancing splitter. This model cooperates
with a set of modified content-based network intrusion detection sensors rather
