    Safety assessment of upper buried gas pipeline under blasting vibration of subway tunnel: a case study in Beijing subway line

    As the buried gas pipelines are not easily field monitored, its status under the influence of tunnel blasting vibration is often difficult to obtain. In order to assess the safety of an upper buried gas pipeline under blasting vibration in the Beijing subway line 16, we established the 3D numerical model of the real field engineering to calculate and analyze the distribution of peak particle velocity (PPV) on the surface soil, proved its reliability by using the field monitoring data and discussed the dynamic response of the pipeline. Based on the analysis, we further assessed the safety of pipeline subjected to tunnel blasting vibration and concluded that the pipeline is only subjected to limited effect of tunnel blasting vibration and thus is safe

    A review on the buried pipeline responses to tunneling-induced ground settlements

    The expansion of cities and urban areas has resulted in an increased demand for environmental and economic transport and services infrastructure. Tunneling, as one of mankind's engineering underground constructions, is taking place close to buried and surface structures such as gas, water, and wastewater pipelines. This paper reviews soil-pipe interaction behavior, tunneling-induced ground settlement, governing equations of soil-pipe settlement, the effects of tunnel depth, size, soil relative density, and volume loss on vertical and horizontal displacement, settlement, shear strain, dilation, pipe bending, and gap formation. A comprehensive literature review, analysis of published papers, and investigations were conducted to study the effect of various parameters on pipeline behavior. The results were obtained by studying the effect of tunneling on ground and pipeline settlement, soil-pipe interaction mechanism, and centrifuge physical modeling. The achieved results of investigations show that the settlement profile follows a Gaussian curve with a wider settlement trough in clay compared to sand. When the tunnel and pipeline are perpendicular to each other, maximum bending strain in the pipeline occurs and the pipeline settlement is symmetrical. The friction effect and formation of contraction and expansion zones lead to the difference between soil volume loss near the surface and tunnel volume loss. When the pipe-soil relative stiffness increases, the pipe bending is less than the maximum soil bending. Also, ground settlement, shear strain, pipeline displacement, and pipeline bending are greater in flexible pipes than in rigid pipelines. This is due to the low resistance of flexible pipelines against bending and settlement caused by tunnel excavation. Positive pipeline bending (downward) occurs near the tunnel axis, which is marked by sagging, but negative bending (upward) occurs at a distance from the tunnel axis, which is known as hogging.  In twin tunnels, by increasing the tunnel spacing the pipeline settlement profile changes from a V-shape to a U-shape and finally a W-shape. Understanding soil-pipe interaction behavior, tunneling-induced ground settlement, and the effects of different parameters on displacement, strain field, settlement, pipe bending, and gap formation beneath pipelines is crucial for engineers evaluating pipeline behavior. Additionally, comprehending these issues can help designers make informed decisions during tunnel construction

    Evaluating the safety and the effect of blast loading on the shotcrete together with lattice girder support of tunnels

    Damage to tunnels caused by explosions may damage the support structure and the stability. This damage is due to either blasting the working face for drilling progress or an explosion inside the tunnel. The present study investigates the dynamic parameters resulting from the blasting pattern on the temporary support structure of the tunnel considered as a lattice girder and shotcrete equivalent cross-section. For this purpose, LS-DYNA finite element software was used to assess the dynamic response of the structure to the vibration of the blasting-induced explosion. The peak particle velocity (PPV) was considered to evaluate the tunnel�s safety under dynamic loads. The results showed that, some levels of destruction would occur by exceeding the velocity of 0.9 m/s in the elements. Regarding the elements of the temporary support structure of the tunnel, it is found that the damage occurs near the face and 2 m from the tunnel

    Mechanical characteristics of twin tunnel underneath construction on existing high-speed railway tunnel

    The running speed of high-speed trains in the tunnel is as high as 350 km, which is very sensitive to the construction disturbance of the new shield tunnel. Therefore, it is of positive significance to study the influence of shield tunneling on existing high-speed railway lines and tunnel structures and control standards. Combined with centrifuge test and three-dimensional numerical simulation, the dynamic response of shield tunnel undercrossing existing high-speed railway tunnel is studied, and the influence of settlement joint and steel pipe pile reinforcement on existing tunnel is analyzed. Studies have shown that the existence of existing tunnels will reduce the surface settlement caused by tunnel excavation, but this shielding effect will be reduced if the influence of construction joints is considered. Therefore, if the construction joint is not considered in the numerical calculation, the ground deformation will be underestimated and the mechanical performance of the existing tunnel structure will be overestimated. In addition, steel pipe piles can effectively control the settlement of existing tunnels
