    Alternative approaches to measurement of ground vibrations due to the vibratory roller: A pilot study

    At present, one of the primary tasks of the construction industry is to build transport infrastructure. This concerns both the construction of new bypasses of towns and the repair of existing roads, which are damaged by congestion, especially by freight transport. Whether it is a new building or a reconstruction, it is always very important to choose a suitable method of subsoil treatment. One of the most commonly used methods for soil treatment is currently compaction using vibratory rollers. This method is very effective both in terms of results and due to its low financial demands compared to other methods. Vibration is transmitted to the surrounding rock environment when compacting the subsoil using vibratory rollers. Although the intensity of these vibrations is not as pronounced as in other methods of subsoil treatment, such vibrations can have a significant effect, for example during compaction in urban areas or in an area with the presence of historical objects. Therefore, it is very advisable to monitor the effect of these vibrations on the environment during construction. This paper brings an original experimental comparative study of standard seismic instrumentation with a developed interferometric sensor for the field of monitoring vibrations generated during compaction of subsoil using vibrating rollers. The paper presents time and frequency domain results, as well as attenuation curves, which represent real attenuation of vibrations in a given rock environment. The results presented here show that a system operating on a different physical principle from the one used at present has the potential to replace the existing, very expensive, seismic equipment.Web of Science1924art. no. 542

    Alternative approaches to vibration measurement due to the blasting operation: A pilot study

    As the infrastructure grows, space on the surface in the urban area is diminishing, and the view of the builders is increasingly moving underground. Implementation of underground structures, however, presents a number of problems during construction. One of the primary side effects of tunnel excavation is vibration. These vibrations need to be monitored for potential damage to structures on the surface, and this monitoring is an integral part of any such structure. This paper brings an original pilot comparative study of standard seismic instrumentation with experimentally developed fiber-optic interferometric and acoustic systems for the purpose of monitoring vibration caused by the blasting operation. The results presented show that systems operating on physical principles (other than those previously used) have the potential to be an alternative that will replace the existing costly seismic equipment. The paper presents waveform images and frequency spectra from experimental measurements of the dynamic response of the rock environment, due to blasting operation performed shallowly during the tunnel excavation of a sewer collector. In the time and frequency domain, there is, by comparison, significant agreement both in the character of the waveform images (recording length, blasting operation timing) and in the spectra (bandwidth, dominant maxima).Web of Science1919art. no. 408

    Performance of the suspension method in large cross-section shallow-buried tunnels

    Large cross-section tunnel construction induces ground surface settlements, potentially endangering both subterranean projects and nearby above-ground structures. A novel tunnel construction method, known as the suspension method, is introduced in this paper to mitigate surface settlement. The suspension method employs vertical tie rods to establish a structural connection between the initial tunnel support system and the surface steel beam, thereby exerting effective control settlements. To analyze the performance of the proposed method, systematic numerical simulations were conducted based on the practical engineering of Harbin Subway Line 3. The surface settlement and vault settlement characteristics during construction are investigated. The results show a gradual increment in both surface and vault settlement throughout the construction process, culminating in a stabilized state upon the completion of construction. In addition, compared to the double-side drift method and the Cross Diaphragm Method (CRD) method, the suspension method can obviously reduce the surface settlement and vault settlement. Moreover, the surface settlements and the axial force of tie rods were continuously monitored during the construction process at the trial tunnel block. These specific monitoring measurements are illustrated in comparison to numerical analysis results. The monitored results show great agreement with the numerical predictions, confirming the success of the project. This research can serve as a valuable practical reference for similar projects, offering insights and guidance for addressing ground surface settlements and enhancing construction safety in the domain of large cross-section tunneling

    Analysis on the Appropriate Buried Depth of the Cold-proof Drainage Hole of the Tunnel in the Cold Region

    A cold-proof drainage hole is an effective measure to prevent freezing injury of a tunnel in a cold region. However, the construction technology and insulation effect of the cold-proof drainage hole only focused on existing research. This study used MIDAS/GTS for modelling based on a tunnel in cold region of Qinghai Province, China to determine the suitable buried depth of a cold-proof drainage tunnel from the mechanical properties and variation of deformation of tunnel in cold region. The working conditions of first excavating the main tunnel and then the cold-proof drainage hole were set. The variation rules of displacement, stress, and plastic zone of the main tunnel and the cold-proof drainage hole under different buried depths were analyzed. The interaction mechanism between the main tunnel and the cold-proof drainage tunnel under different buried depths was revealed. Results show that: the structure of main tunnel hole is interplayed with that of cold-proof drainage hole; from the point of displacement change rule, the optimal effective buried depth for cold-proof drainage hole of a tunnel in China\u27s Qinghai Province is from 5 m to 6 m; from the point of stress change rule, the optimal effective buried depth for the cold-proof drainage hole is also from 5 m to 6 m; from the point of plastic zone change rule, the optimal effective buried depth for the cold-proof drainage hole is from 4 m to 6 m considering the stress uniformity of support and material for cold-proof drainage hole. The effective buried depth of the cold-proof drainage hole is confirmed to be 5 m. The results of finite element analysis are consistent with the field monitoring results, thereby verifying the reliability of the analytical results in this study. This study has guiding significance for the construction of the cold-proof drainage tunnel in the cold region

    In Situ Test of Grouting Reinforcement for Water-Enriched Sandy Gravel Ground in River Floodplain

    The performance of the ground treatment is always critical for a tunnel excavated in unstable stratum. Laodongnanlu Xiangjiang Tunnel (Changsha, China) across the Xiangjiang River will be constructed in a sandy gravel ground which is characterized by loose structure, extensive porosity, elevated sensitivity, poor stability, and a high groundwater table. Permeation grouting will be employed to improve the bearing capacity and mitigate groundwater movement into the excavation. In order to seek suitable injection parameters and grouting method, a field trial of vertical grouting was conducted in the sandy gravel stratum in river floodplain. A series of tests focusing on grout material, grouting sequence of boreholes, injection pressure, and grouting volume were performed to improve the sandy gravel mass strength and reduce water permeability. The examination of the results obtained during water pressure testing and core drilling on completion of the grouting trial successfully demonstrated that the specified injection criteria had led to an expected effect. Grouting control method of this saturated sandy gravel stratum was concluded after the test, which would contribute to the future pregrouting work during the tunnelling

    Investigation into the Application of Construction and Demolition Waste in Urban Roads

    The recycling and reuse of waste materials is a topic of global concern and great international interest for those interested in sustainable development and protecting the environment. In recent decades, global production of construction and demolition waste (C&D waste) has significantly increased and became a worldwide problem. This research proposes to evaluate the feasibility of using aggregate from recycled C&D waste for urban road embankment applications based on the Sanhuan road construction project in eastern Xi’an. An extensive suite of laboratory and field compaction tests were carried out to determine the physical properties and engineering characteristics of the C&D waste. The effect of curing on the strength of the C&D waste was investigated using unconfined compression strength (UCS), California bearing ratio (CBR), and deflection tests. The results show that the C&D waste has the characteristics of high strength and significant stability after simple treatment and further suggest that the use of these materials for paving urban road embankments is feasible. This study is of value for the reasonable and effective promotion of using C&D waste recycled materials in road subgrade applications

    Sustainable and resilient pavement infrastructure is critical for current economic and environmental challenges. In the past 10 years, the pavement infrastructure strongly supports the rapid development of the global social economy. New theories, new methods, new technologies and new materials related to pavement engineering are emerging. Deterioration of pavement infrastructure is a typical multi-physics problem. Because of actual coupled behaviors of traffic and environmental conditions, predictions of pavement service life become more and more complicated and require a deep knowledge of pavement material analysis. In order to summarize the current and determine the future research of pavement engineering, Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering (English Edition) has launched a review paper on the topic of “New innovations in pavement materials and engineering: A review on pavement engineering research 2021”. Based on the joint-effort of 43 scholars from 24 well-known universities in highway engineering, this review paper systematically analyzes the research status and future development direction of 5 major fields of pavement engineering in the world. The content includes asphalt binder performance and modeling, mixture performance and modeling of pavement materials, multi-scale mechanics, green and sustainable pavement, and intelligent pavement. Overall, this review paper is able to provide references and insights for researchers and engineers in the field of pavement engineering
