Simulated evaluation of faceted browsing based on feature selection
In this paper we explore the limitations of facet based browsing which uses sub-needs of an information need for querying and organising the search process in video retrieval. The underlying assumption of this approach is that the search effectiveness will be enhanced if such an approach is employed for interactive video retrieval using textual and visual features. We explore the performance bounds of a faceted system by carrying out a simulated user evaluation on TRECVid data sets, and also on the logs of a prior user experiment with the system. We first present a methodology to reduce the dimensionality of features by selecting the most important ones. Then, we discuss the simulated evaluation strategies employed in our evaluation and the effect on the use of both textual and visual features. Facets created by users are simulated by clustering video shots using textual and visual features. The experimental results of our study demonstrate that the faceted browser can potentially improve the search effectiveness
FRIOD: a deeply integrated feature-rich interactive system for effective and efficient outlier detection
In this paper, we propose an novel interactive outlier detection system called feature-rich interactive outlier detection (FRIOD), which features a deep integration of human interaction to improve detection performance and greatly streamline the detection process. A user-friendly interactive mechanism is developed to allow easy and intuitive user interaction in all the major stages of the underlying outlier detection algorithm which includes dense cell selection, location-aware distance thresholding, and final top outlier validation. By doing so, we can mitigate the major difficulty of the competitive outlier detection methods in specifying the key parameter values, such as the density and distance thresholds. An innovative optimization approach is also proposed to optimize the grid-based space partitioning, which is a critical step of FRIOD. Such optimization fully considers the high-quality outliers it detects with the aid of human interaction. The experimental evaluation demonstrates that FRIOD can improve the quality of the detected outliers and make the detection process more intuitive, effective, and efficient

The effect of network topology on optimal exploration strategies and the evolution of cooperation in a mobile population
We model a mobile population interacting over an underlying spatial structure using a Markov movement model. Interactions take the form of public goods games, and can feature an arbitrary group size. Individuals choose strategically to remain at their current location or to move to a neighbouring location, depending upon their exploration strategy and the current composition of their group. This builds upon previous work where the underlying structure was a complete graph (i.e. there was effectively no structure). Here, we consider alternative network structures and a wider variety of, mainly larger, populations. Previously, we had found when cooperation could evolve, depending upon the values of a range of population parameters. In our current work, we see that the complete graph considered before promotes stability, with populations of cooperators or defectors being relatively hard to replace. By contrast, the star graph promotes instability, and often neither type of population can resist replacement. We discuss potential reasons for this in terms of network topology
Persistent Homology Guided Force-Directed Graph Layouts
Graphs are commonly used to encode relationships among entities, yet their
abstractness makes them difficult to analyze. Node-link diagrams are popular
for drawing graphs, and force-directed layouts provide a flexible method for
node arrangements that use local relationships in an attempt to reveal the
global shape of the graph. However, clutter and overlap of unrelated structures
can lead to confusing graph visualizations. This paper leverages the persistent
homology features of an undirected graph as derived information for interactive
manipulation of force-directed layouts. We first discuss how to efficiently
extract 0-dimensional persistent homology features from both weighted and
unweighted undirected graphs. We then introduce the interactive persistence
barcode used to manipulate the force-directed graph layout. In particular, the
user adds and removes contracting and repulsing forces generated by the
persistent homology features, eventually selecting the set of persistent
homology features that most improve the layout. Finally, we demonstrate the
utility of our approach across a variety of synthetic and real datasets
