    Enabling Multi-LiDAR Sensing in GNSS-Denied Environments: SLAM Dataset, Benchmark, and UAV Tracking with LiDAR-as-a-camera

    The rise of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensors has profoundly impacted industries ranging from automotive to urban planning. As these sensors become increasingly affordable and compact, their applications are diversifying, driving precision, and innovation. This thesis delves into LiDAR's advancements in autonomous robotic systems, with a focus on its role in simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) methodologies and LiDAR as a camera-based tracking for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). Our contributions span two primary domains: the Multi-Modal LiDAR SLAM Benchmark, and the LiDAR-as-a-camera UAV Tracking. In the former, we have expanded our previous multi-modal LiDAR dataset by adding more data sequences from various scenarios. In contrast to the previous dataset, we employ different ground truth-generating approaches. We propose a new multi-modal multi-lidar SLAM-assisted and ICP-based sensor fusion method for generating ground truth maps. Additionally, we also supplement our data with new open road sequences with GNSS-RTK. This enriched dataset, supported by high-resolution LiDAR, provides detailed insights through an evaluation of ten configurations, pairing diverse LiDAR sensors with state-of-the-art SLAM algorithms. In the latter contribution, we leverage a custom YOLOv5 model trained on panoramic low-resolution images from LiDAR reflectivity (LiDAR-as-a-camera) to detect UAVs, demonstrating the superiority of this approach over point cloud or image-only methods. Additionally, we evaluated the real-time performance of our approach on the Nvidia Jetson Nano, a popular mobile computing platform. Overall, our research underscores the transformative potential of integrating advanced LiDAR sensors with autonomous robotics. By bridging the gaps between different technological approaches, we pave the way for more versatile and efficient applications in the future

    Laser-Based Detection and Tracking of Moving Obstacles to Improve Perception of Unmanned Ground Vehicles

    El objetivo de esta tesis es desarrollar un sistema que mejore la etapa de percepción de vehículos terrestres no tripulados (UGVs) heterogéneos, consiguiendo con ello una navegación robusta en términos de seguridad y ahorro energético en diferentes entornos reales, tanto interiores como exteriores. La percepción debe tratar con obstáculos estáticos y dinámicos empleando sensores heterogéneos, tales como, odometría, sensor de distancia láser (LIDAR), unidad de medida inercial (IMU) y sistema de posicionamiento global (GPS), para obtener la información del entorno con la precisión más alta, permitiendo mejorar las etapas de planificación y evitación de obstáculos. Para conseguir este objetivo, se propone una etapa de mapeado de obstáculos dinámicos (DOMap) que contiene la información de los obstáculos estáticos y dinámicos. La propuesta se basa en una extensión del filtro de ocupación bayesiana (BOF) incluyendo velocidades no discretizadas. La detección de velocidades se obtiene con Flujo Óptico sobre una rejilla de medidas LIDAR discretizadas. Además, se gestionan las oclusiones entre obstáculos y se añade una etapa de seguimiento multi-hipótesis, mejorando la robustez de la propuesta (iDOMap). La propuesta ha sido probada en entornos simulados y reales con diferentes plataformas robóticas, incluyendo plataformas comerciales y la plataforma (PROPINA) desarrollada en esta tesis para mejorar la colaboración entre equipos de humanos y robots dentro del proyecto ABSYNTHE.     Efficient scene simulation for robust monte carlo localization using an RGB-D camera

    This paper presents Kinect Monte Carlo Localization (KMCL), a new method for localization in three dimensional indoor environments using RGB-D cameras, such as the Microsoft Kinect. The approach makes use of a low fidelity a priori 3-D model of the area of operation composed of large planar segments, such as walls and ceilings, which are assumed to remain static. Using this map as input, the KMCL algorithm employs feature-based visual odometry as the particle propagation mechanism and utilizes the 3-D map and the underlying sensor image formation model to efficiently simulate RGB-D camera views at the location of particle poses, using a graphical processing unit (GPU). The generated 3D views of the scene are then used to evaluate the likelihood of the particle poses. This GPU implementation provides a factor of ten speedup over a pure distance-based method, yet provides comparable accuracy. Experimental results are presented for five different configurations, including: (1) a robotic wheelchair, (2) a sensor mounted on a person, (3) an Ascending Technologies quadrotor, (4) a Willow Garage PR2, and (5) an RWI B21 wheeled mobile robot platform. The results demonstrate that the system can perform robust localization with 3D information for motions as fast as 1.5 meters per second. The approach is designed to be applicable not just for robotics but other applications such as wearable computing

    DEVELOPMENT OF AN AUTONOMOUS NAVIGATION SYSTEM FOR THE SHUTTLE CAR IN UNDERGROUND ROOM & PILLAR COAL MINES

    In recent years, autonomous solutions in the multi-disciplinary field of the mining engineering have been an extremely popular applied research topic. The growing demand for mineral supplies combined with the steady decline in the available surface reserves has driven the mining industry to mine deeper underground deposits. These deposits are difficult to access, and the environment may be hazardous to mine personnel (e.g., increased heat, difficult ventilation conditions, etc.). Moreover, current mining methods expose the miners to numerous occupational hazards such as working in the proximity of heavy mining equipment, possible roof falls, as well as noise and dust. As a result, the mining industry, in its efforts to modernize and advance its methods and techniques, is one of the many industries that has turned to autonomous systems. Vehicle automation in such complex working environments can play a critical role in improving worker safety and mine productivity. One of the most time-consuming tasks of the mining cycle is the transportation of the extracted ore from the face to the main haulage facility or to surface processing facilities. Although conveyor belts have long been the autonomous transportation means of choice, there are still many cases where a discrete transportation system is needed to transport materials from the face to the main haulage system. The current dissertation presents the development of a navigation system for an autonomous shuttle car (ASC) in underground room and pillar coal mines. By introducing autonomous shuttle cars, the operator can be relocated from the dusty, noisy, and potentially dangerous environment of the underground mine to the safer location of a control room. This dissertation focuses on the development and testing of an autonomous navigation system for an underground room and pillar coal mine. A simplified relative localization system which determines the location of the vehicle relatively to salient features derived from on-board 2D LiDAR scans was developed for a semi-autonomous laboratory-scale shuttle car prototype. This simplified relative localization system is heavily dependent on and at the same time leverages the room and pillar geometry. Instead of keeping track of a global position of the vehicle relatively to a fixed coordinates frame, the proposed custom localization technique requires information regarding only the immediate surroundings. The followed approach enables the prototype to navigate around the pillars in real-time using a deterministic Finite-State Machine which models the behavior of the vehicle in the room and pillar mine with only a few states. Also, a user centered GUI has been developed that allows for a human user to control and monitor the autonomous vehicle by implementing the proposed navigation system. Experimental tests have been conducted in a mock mine in order to evaluate the performance of the developed system. A number of different scenarios simulating common missions that a shuttle car needs to undertake in a room and pillar mine. The results show a minimum success ratio of 70%

    This thesis details work on different techniques used to implement service robots for indoor environments. This included two machine learning techniques: Target Detection and Indoor scene classification as well as two computer vision techniques: Visual mapping and three-dimensional mapping. Using these techniques, we tried to make service robots better in environments like hospitals. Assistance provided by service robots will help staff in managing tedious tasks without any problem. We used different techniques for mapping and localization so service robots can autonomously navigate from floor to floor. Depth cameras were used to make recognition and mapping better for indoor environments

    Contributions to autonomous robust navigation of mobile robots in industrial applications

    151 p.Un aspecto en el que las plataformas móviles actuales se quedan atrás en comparación con el punto que se ha alcanzado ya en la industria es la precisión. La cuarta revolución industrial trajo consigo la implantación de maquinaria en la mayor parte de procesos industriales, y una fortaleza de estos es su repetitividad. Los robots móviles autónomos, que son los que ofrecen una mayor flexibilidad, carecen de esta capacidad, principalmente debido al ruido inherente a las lecturas ofrecidas por los sensores y al dinamismo existente en la mayoría de entornos. Por este motivo, gran parte de este trabajo se centra en cuantificar el error cometido por los principales métodos de mapeado y localización de robots móviles,ofreciendo distintas alternativas para la mejora del posicionamiento.Asimismo, las principales fuentes de información con las que los robots móviles son capaces de realizarlas funciones descritas son los sensores exteroceptivos, los cuales miden el entorno y no tanto el estado del propio robot. Por esta misma razón, algunos métodos son muy dependientes del escenario en el que se han desarrollado, y no obtienen los mismos resultados cuando este varía. La mayoría de plataformas móviles generan un mapa que representa el entorno que les rodea, y fundamentan en este muchos de sus cálculos para realizar acciones como navegar. Dicha generación es un proceso que requiere de intervención humana en la mayoría de casos y que tiene una gran repercusión en el posterior funcionamiento del robot. En la última parte del presente trabajo, se propone un método que pretende optimizar este paso para así generar un modelo más rico del entorno sin requerir de tiempo adicional para ello
