    Gabor-enhanced histogram of oriented gradients for human presence detection applied in aerial monitoring

    In UAV-based human detection, the extraction and selection of the feature vector are one of the critical tasks to ensure the optimal performance of the detection system. Although UAV cameras capture high-resolution images, human figures' relative size renders persons at very low resolution and contrast. Feature descriptors that can adequately discriminate between local symmetrical patterns in a low-contrast image may improve a human figures' detection in vegetative environments. Such a descriptor is proposed and presented in this paper. Initially, the acquired images are fed to a digital processor in a ground station where the human detection algorithm is performed. Part of the human detection algorithm is the GeHOG feature extraction, where a bank of Gabor filters is used to generate textured images from the original. The local energy for each cell of the Gabor images is calculated to identify the dominant orientations. The bins of conventional HOG are enhanced based on the dominant orientation index and the accumulated local energy in Gabor images. To measure the performance of the proposed features, Gabor-enhanced HOG (GeHOG) and other two recent improvements to HOG, Histogram of Edge Oriented Gradients (HEOG) and Improved HOG (ImHOG), are used for human detection on INRIA dataset and a custom dataset of farmers working in fields captured via unmanned aerial vehicle. The proposed feature descriptor significantly improved human detection and performed better than recent improvements in conventional HOG. Using GeHOG improved the precision of human detection to 98.23% in the INRIA dataset. The proposed feature can significantly improve human detection applied in surveillance systems, especially in vegetative environments

    Saliency detection for stereoscopic images

    International audienceSaliency detection techniques have been widely used in various 2D multimedia processing applications. Currently, the emerging applications of stereoscopic display require new saliency detection models for stereoscopic images. Different from saliency detection for 2D images, depth features have to be taken into account in saliency detection for stereoscopic images. In this paper, we propose a new stereoscopic saliency detection framework based on the feature contrast of color, intensity, texture, and depth. Four types of features including color, luminance, texture, and depth are extracted from DC-T coefficients to represent the energy for image patches. A Gaussian model of the spatial distance between image patches is adopted for the consideration of local and global contrast calculation. A new fusion method is designed to combine the feature maps for computing the final saliency map for stereoscopic images. Experimental results on a recent eye tracking database show the superior performance of the proposed method over other existing ones in saliency estimation for 3D images

    Fingerprint recognition: A study on image enhancement and minutiae extraction

    Fingerprints are a great source for identification of individuals. Fingerprint recognition is one of the oldest forms of biometric identification. However obtaining a good fingerprint image is not always easy. So the fingerprint image must be preprocessed before matching. The objective of this project is to present a better and enhanced fingerprint image. We have studied the factors relating to obtaining high performance feature points detection algorithm, such as image quality, segmentation, image enhancement and feature detection. Commonly used features for improving fingerprint image quality are Fourier spectrum energy, Gabor filter energy and local orientation. Accurate segmentation of fingerprint ridges from noisy background is necessary. For efficient enhancement and feature extraction algorithms, the segmented features must be void of any noise. A preprocessing method consisting of field orientation, ridge frequency estimation, Gabor filtering, segmentation and enhancement is performed. The obtained image is applied to a thinning algorithm and subsequent minutiae extraction. The methodology of image preprocessing and minutiae extraction is discussed. The simulations are performed in the MATLAB environment to evaluate the performance of the implemented algorithms. Results and observations of the fingerprint images are presented at the end

    Detectability of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles in the Sagittarius Dwarf Tidal Stream

    Tidal streams of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr) may be showering dark matter onto the solar system and contributing approx (0.3--23)% of the local density of our Galactic Halo. If the Sagittarius galaxy contains WIMP dark matter, the extra contribution from the stream gives rise to a step-like feature in the energy recoil spectrum in direct dark matter detection. For our best estimate of stream velocity (300 km/sec) and direction (the plane containing the Sgr dwarf and its debris), the count rate is maximum on June 28 and minimum on December 27 (for most recoil energies), and the location of the step oscillates yearly with a phase opposite to that of the count rate. In the CDMS experiment, for 60 GeV WIMPs, the location of the step oscillates between 35 and 42 keV, and for the most favorable stream density, the stream should be detectable at the 11 sigma level in four years of data with 10 keV energy bins. Planned large detectors like XENON, CryoArray and the directional detector DRIFT may also be able to identify the Sgr stream.Comment: 26 pages, 4 figure

    Forensic research on detecting seam carving in digital images

    Digital images have been playing an important role in our daily life for the last several decades. Naturally, image editing technologies have been tremendously developed due to the increasing demands. As a result, digital images can be easily manipulated on a personal computer or even a cellphone for many purposes nowadays, so that the authenticity of digital images becomes an important issue. In this dissertation research, four machine learning based forensic methods are presented to detect one of the popular image editing techniques, called ‘seam carving’. To reveal seam carving applied to uncompressed images from the perspective of energy distribution change, an energy based statistical model is proposed as the first work in this dissertation. Features measured global energy of images, remaining optimal seams, and noise level are extracted from four local derivative pattern (LDP) domains instead of from the original pixel domain to heighten the energy change caused by seam carving. A support vector machine (SVM) based classifier is employed to determine whether an image has been seam carved or not. In the second work, an advanced feature model is presented for seam carving detection by investigating the statistical variation among neighboring pixels. Comprised with three types of statistical features, i.e., LDP features, Markov features, and SPAM features, the powerful feature model significantly improved the state-of-the-art accuracy in detecting low carving rate seam carving. After the feature selection by utilizing SVM based recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE), with a small amount of features selected from the proposed model the overall performance is further improved. Combining above mentioned two works, a hybrid feature model is then proposed as the third work to further boost the accuracy in detecting seam carving at low carving rate. The proposed model consists of two sets of features, which capture energy change and neighboring relationship variation respectively, achieves remarkable performance on revealing seam carving, especially low carving rate seam carving, in digital images. Besides these three hand crafted feature models, a deep convolutional neural network is designed for seam carving detection. It is the first work that successfully utilizes deep learning technology to solve this forensic problem. The experimental works demonstrate their much more improved performance in the cases where the amount of seam carving is not serious. Although these four pieces of work move the seam carving detection ahead substantially, future research works with more advanced statistical model or deep neural network along this line are expected

    Drift-Free Indoor Navigation Using Simultaneous Localization and Mapping of the Ambient Heterogeneous Magnetic Field

    In the absence of external reference position information (e.g. GNSS) SLAM has proven to be an effective method for indoor navigation. The positioning drift can be reduced with regular loop-closures and global relaxation as the backend, thus achieving a good balance between exploration and exploitation. Although vision-based systems like laser scanners are typically deployed for SLAM, these sensors are heavy, energy inefficient, and expensive, making them unattractive for wearables or smartphone applications. However, the concept of SLAM can be extended to non-optical systems such as magnetometers. Instead of matching features such as walls and furniture using some variation of the ICP algorithm, the local magnetic field can be matched to provide loop-closure and global trajectory updates in a Gaussian Process (GP) SLAM framework. With a MEMS-based inertial measurement unit providing a continuous trajectory, and the matching of locally distinct magnetic field maps, experimental results in this paper show that a drift-free navigation solution in an indoor environment with millimetre-level accuracy can be achieved. The GP-SLAM approach presented can be formulated as a maximum a posteriori estimation problem and it can naturally perform loop-detection, feature-to-feature distance minimization, global trajectory optimization, and magnetic field map estimation simultaneously. Spatially continuous features (i.e. smooth magnetic field signatures) are used instead of discrete feature correspondences (e.g. point-to-point) as in conventional vision-based SLAM. These position updates from the ambient magnetic field also provide enough information for calibrating the accelerometer and gyroscope bias in-use. The only restriction for this method is the need for magnetic disturbances (which is typically not an issue indoors); however, no assumptions are required for the general motion of the sensor.Comment: ISPRS Workshop Indoor 3D 201

    Feature-based Image Comparison and Its Application in Wireless Visual Sensor Networks

    This dissertation studies the feature-based image comparison method and its application in Wireless Visual Sensor Networks. Wireless Visual Sensor Networks (WVSNs), formed by a large number of low-cost, small-size visual sensor nodes, represent a new trend in surveillance and monitoring practices. Although each single sensor has very limited capability in sensing, processing and transmission, by working together they can achieve various high level tasks. Sensor collaboration is essential to WVSNs and normally performed among sensors having similar measurements, which are called neighbor sensors. The directional sensing characteristics of imagers and the presence of visual occlusion present unique challenges to neighborhood formation, as geographically-close neighbors might not monitor similar scenes. Besides, the energy resource on the WVSNs is also very tight, with wireless communication and complicated computation consuming most energy in WVSNs. Therefore the feature-based image comparison method has been proposed, which directly compares the captured image from each visual sensor in an economical way in terms of both the computational cost and the transmission overhead. The feature-based image comparison method compares different images and aims to find similar image pairs using a set of local features from each image. The image feature is a numerical representation of the raw image and can be more compact in terms of the data volume than the raw image. The feature-based image comparison contains three steps: feature detection, descriptor calculation and feature comparison. For the step of feature detection, the dissertation proposes two computationally efficient corner detectors. The first detector is based on the Discrete Wavelet Transform that provides multi-scale corner point detection and the scale selection is achieved efficiently through a Gaussian convolution approach. The second detector is based on a linear unmixing model, which treats a corner point as the intersection of two or three “line” bases in a 3 by 3 region. The line bases are extracted through a constrained Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF) approach and the corner detection is accomplished through counting the number of contributing bases in the linear mixture. For the step of descriptor calculation, the dissertation proposes an effective dimensionality reduction algorithm for the high dimensional Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) descriptors. A set of 40 SIFT descriptor bases are extracted through constrained NMF from a large training set and all SIFT descriptors are then projected onto the space spanned by these bases, achieving dimensionality reduction. The efficiency of the proposed corner detectors have been proven through theoretical analysis. In addition, the effectiveness of the proposed corner detectors and the dimensionality reduction approach has been validated through extensive comparison with several state-of-the-art feature detector/descriptor combinations
