    A Comprehensive Survey of Deep Learning in Remote Sensing: Theories, Tools and Challenges for the Community

    In recent years, deep learning (DL), a re-branding of neural networks (NNs), has risen to the top in numerous areas, namely computer vision (CV), speech recognition, natural language processing, etc. Whereas remote sensing (RS) possesses a number of unique challenges, primarily related to sensors and applications, inevitably RS draws from many of the same theories as CV; e.g., statistics, fusion, and machine learning, to name a few. This means that the RS community should be aware of, if not at the leading edge of, of advancements like DL. Herein, we provide the most comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art RS DL research. We also review recent new developments in the DL field that can be used in DL for RS. Namely, we focus on theories, tools and challenges for the RS community. Specifically, we focus on unsolved challenges and opportunities as it relates to (i) inadequate data sets, (ii) human-understandable solutions for modelling physical phenomena, (iii) Big Data, (iv) non-traditional heterogeneous data sources, (v) DL architectures and learning algorithms for spectral, spatial and temporal data, (vi) transfer learning, (vii) an improved theoretical understanding of DL systems, (viii) high barriers to entry, and (ix) training and optimizing the DL.Comment: 64 pages, 411 references.     Sea-Surface Object Detection Based on Electro-Optical Sensors: A Review

    Sea-surface object detection is critical for navigation safety of autonomous ships. Electrooptical (EO) sensors, such as video cameras, complement radar on board in detecting small obstacle sea-surface objects. Traditionally, researchers have used horizon detection, background subtraction, and foreground segmentation techniques to detect sea-surface objects. Recently, deep learning-based object detection technologies have been gradually applied to sea-surface object detection. This article demonstrates a comprehensive overview of sea-surface object-detection approaches where the advantages and drawbacks of each technique are compared, covering four essential aspects: EO sensors and image types, traditional object-detection methods, deep learning methods, and maritime datasets collection.     Offshore oil spill detection using synthetic aperture radar

    Among the different types of marine pollution, oil spill has been considered as a major threat to the sea ecosystems. The source of the oil pollution can be located on the mainland or directly at sea. The sources of oil pollution at sea are discharges coming from ships, offshore platforms or natural seepage from sea bed. Oil pollution from sea-based sources can be accidental or deliberate. Different sensors to detect and monitor oil spills could be onboard vessels, aircraft, or satellites. Vessels equipped with specialised radars, can detect oil at sea but they can cover a very limited area. One of the established ways to monitor sea-based oil pollution is the use of satellites equipped with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR).The aim of the work presented in this thesis is to identify optimum set of feature extracted parameters and implement methods at various stages for oil spill detection from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery. More than 200 images of ERS-2, ENVSAT and RADARSAT 2 SAR sensor have been used to assess proposed feature vector for oil spill detection methodology, which involves three stages: segmentation for dark spot detection, feature extraction and classification of feature vector. Unfortunately oil spill is not only the phenomenon that can create a dark spot in SAR imagery. There are several others meteorological and oceanographic and wind induced phenomena which may lead to a dark spot in SAR imagery. Therefore, these dark objects also appear similar to the dark spot due to oil spill and are called as look-alikes. These look-alikes thus cause difficulty in detecting oil spill spots as their primary characteristic similar to oil spill spots. To get over this difficulty, feature extraction becomes important; a stage which may involve selection of appropriate feature extraction parameters. The main objective of this dissertation is to identify the optimum feature vector in order to segregate oil spill and ‘look-alike’ spots. A total of 44 Feature extracted parameters have been studied. For segmentation, four methods; based on edge detection, adaptive theresholding, artificial neural network (ANN) segmentation and the other on contrast split segmentation have been implemented. Spot features are extracted from both the dark spots themselves and their surroundings. Classification stage was performed using two different classification techniques, first one is based on ANN and the other based on a two-stage processing that combines classification tree analysis and fuzzy logic. A modified feature vector, including both new and improved features, is suggested for better description of different types of dark spots. An ANN classifier using full spectrum of feature parameters has also been developed and evaluated. The implemented methodology appears promising in detecting dark spots and discriminating oil spills from look-alikes and processing time is well below any operational service requirements

    A Deep Learning-Based Automatic Object Detection Method for Autonomous Driving Ships

    An important feature of an Autonomous Surface Vehicles (ASV) is its capability of automatic object detection to avoid collisions, obstacles and navigate on their own. Deep learning has made some significant headway in solving fundamental challenges associated with object detection and computer vision. With tremendous demand and advancement in the technologies associated with ASVs, a growing interest in applying deep learning techniques in handling challenges pertaining to autonomous ship driving has substantially increased over the years. In this thesis, we study, design, and implement an object recognition framework that detects and recognizes objects found in the sea. We first curated a Sea-object Image Dataset (SID) specifically for this project. Then, by utilizing a pre-trained RetinaNet model on a large-scale object detection dataset named Microsoft COCO, we further fine-tune it on our SID dataset. We focused on sea objects that may potentially cause collisions or other types of maritime accidents. Our final model can effectively detect various types of floating or surrounding objects and classify them into one of the ten predefined significant classes, which are buoy, ship, island, pier, person, waves, rocks, buildings, lighthouse, and fish.     Fuzzy logic based approach for object feature tracking

    This thesis introduces a novel technique for feature tracking in sequences of greyscale images based on fuzzy logic. A versatile and modular methodology for feature tracking using fuzzy sets and inference engines is presented. Moreover, an extension of this methodology to perform the correct tracking of multiple features is also presented. To perform feature tracking three membership functions are initially defined. A membership function related to the distinctive property of the feature to be tracked. A membership function is related to the fact of considering that the feature has smooth movement between each image sequence and a membership function concerns its expected future location. Applying these functions to the image pixels, the corresponding fuzzy sets are obtained and then mathematically manipulated to serve as input to an inference engine. Situations such as occlusion or detection failure of features are overcome using estimated positions calculated using a motion model and a state vector of the feature. This methodology was previously applied to track a single feature identified by the user. Several performance tests were conducted on sequences of both synthetic and real images. Experimental results are presented, analysed and discussed. Although this methodology could be applied directly to multiple feature tracking, an extension of this methodology has been developed within that purpose. In this new method, the processing sequence of each feature is dynamic and hierarchical. Dynamic because this sequence can change over time and hierarchical because features with higher priority will be processed first. Thus, the process gives preference to features whose location are easier to predict compared with features whose knowledge of their behavior is less predictable. When this priority value becomes too low, the feature will no longer tracked by the algorithm. To access the performance of this new approach, sequences of images where several features specified by the user are to be tracked were used. In the final part of this work, conclusions drawn from this work as well as the definition of some guidelines for future research are presented.Nesta tese é introduzida uma nova técnica de seguimento de pontos característicos de objectos em sequências de imagens em escala de cinzentos baseada em lógica difusa. É apresentada uma metodologia versátil e modular para o seguimento de objectos utilizando conjuntos difusos e motores de inferência. É também apresentada uma extensão desta metodologia para o correcto seguimento de múltiplos pontos característicos. Para se realizar o seguimento são definidas inicialmente três funções de pertença. Uma função de pertença está relacionada com a propriedade distintiva do objecto que desejamos seguir, outra está relacionada com o facto de se considerar que o objecto tem uma movimentação suave entre cada imagem da sequência e outra função de pertença referente à sua previsível localização futura. Aplicando estas funções de pertença aos píxeis da imagem, obtêm-se os correspondentes conjuntos difusos, que serão manipulados matematicamente e servirão como entrada num motor de inferência. Situações como a oclusão ou falha na detecção dos pontos característicos são ultrapassadas utilizando posições estimadas calculadas a partir do modelo de movimento e a um vector de estados do objecto. Esta metodologia foi inicialmente aplicada no seguimento de um objecto assinalado pelo utilizador. Foram realizados vários testes de desempenho em sequências de imagens sintéticas e também reais. Os resultados experimentais obtidos são apresentados, analisados e discutidos. Embora esta metodologia pudesse ser aplicada directamente ao seguimento de múltiplos pontos característicos, foi desenvolvida uma extensão desta metodologia para esse fim. Nesta nova metodologia a sequência de processamento de cada ponto característico é dinâmica e hierárquica. Dinâmica por ser variável ao longo do tempo e hierárquica por existir uma hierarquia de prioridades relativamente aos pontos característicos a serem seguidos e que determina a ordem pela qual esses pontos são processados. Desta forma, o processo dá preferência a pontos característicos cuja localização é mais fácil de prever comparativamente a pontos característicos cujo conhecimento do seu comportamento seja menos previsível. Quando esse valor de prioridade se torna demasiado baixo, esse ponto característico deixa de ser seguido pelo algoritmo. Para se observar o desempenho desta nova abordagem foram utilizadas sequências de imagens onde várias características indicadas pelo utilizador são seguidas. Na parte final deste trabalho são apresentadas as conclusões resultantes a partir do desenvolvimento deste trabalho, bem como a definição de algumas linhas de investigação futura

    Mapping three-dimensional geological features from remotely-sensed images and digital elevation models.

    Accurate mapping of geological structures is important in numerous applications, ranging from mineral exploration through to hydrogeological modelling. Remotely sensed data can provide synoptic views of study areas enabling mapping of geological units within the area. Structural information may be derived from such data using standard manual photo-geologic interpretation techniques, although these are often inaccurate and incomplete. The aim of this thesis is, therefore, to compile a suite of automated and interactive computer-based analysis routines, designed to help a the user map geological structure. These are examined and integrated in the context of an expert system. The data used in this study include Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and Airborne Thematic Mapper images, both with a spatial resolution of 5m, for a 5 x 5 km area surrounding Llyn Cow lyd, Snowdonia, North Wales. The geology of this area comprises folded and faulted Ordo vician sediments intruded throughout by dolerite sills, providing a stringent test for the automated and semi-automated procedures. The DEM is used to highlight geomorphological features which may represent surface expressions of the sub-surface geology. The DEM is created from digitized contours, for which kriging is found to provide the best interpolation routine, based on a number of quantitative measures. Lambertian shading and the creation of slope and change of slope datasets are shown to provide the most successful enhancement of DEMs, in terms of highlighting a range of key geomorphological features. The digital image data are used to identify rock outcrops as well as lithologically controlled features in the land cover. To this end, a series of standard spectral enhancements of the images is examined. In this respect, the least correlated 3 band composite and a principal component composite are shown to give the best visual discrimination of geological and vegetation cover types. Automatic edge detection (followed by line thinning and extraction) and manual interpretation techniques are used to identify a set of 'geological primitives' (linear or arc features representing lithological boundaries) within these data. Inclusion of the DEM data provides the three-dimensional co-ordinates of these primitives enabling a least-squares fit to be employed to calculate dip and strike values, based, initially, on the assumption of a simple, linearly dipping structural model. A very large number of scene 'primitives' is identified using these procedures, only some of which have geological significance. Knowledge-based rules are therefore used to identify the relevant. For example, rules are developed to identify lake edges, forest boundaries, forest tracks, rock-vegetation boundaries, and areas of geomorphological interest. Confidence in the geological significance of some of the geological primitives is increased where they are found independently in both the DEM and remotely sensed data. The dip and strike values derived in this way are compared to information taken from the published geological map for this area, as well as measurements taken in the field. Many results are shown to correspond closely to those taken from the map and in the field, with an error of < 1°. These data and rules are incorporated into an expert system which, initially, produces a simple model of the geological structure. The system also provides a graphical user interface for manual control and interpretation, where necessary. Although the system currently only allows a relatively simple structural model (linearly dipping with faulting), in the future it will be possible to extend the system to model more complex features, such as anticlines, synclines, thrusts, nappes, and igneous intrusions

    خوارزميات معالجة الصورة كانت ذات تأثير فائق في احتساب ومعرفة خصائص اللهب مثل الارتفاع، الطول والسمك والتي في اغلب الأحيان لا يمكن قياسها في الظروف التشغيلية وذلك من خلال اخذ صورة رقمية للهب او الشعلة بواسطة كامرة فائقة السرعة لثلاث أنواع من الوقود المستخدم في توليد الشعلة&nbsp; باستخدام نفاث وقود معد لسريان الوقود ومن ثم انتاج الشعلة والذي يعتمد على عدة متغيرات مثل معدل تدفق الوقود, قطر النفاث ومقدار الضغط المسلط. في هذا البحث تم تطبيق طريقتين رياضية لتمثيل البيانات لغرض قياس خصائص ومواصفات اللهب المتكون من نوع الانتشار. الأول كان تطبيق توزيع ) (Wien’s &nbsp;&nbsp;للجسم الأسود مع ملف المعالجة الخاص ببرنامج الماثلاب , والثاني يعتمد على مناطق شدة اللهب. ان الهدف من هذه الاختيارات هو لتحسين الصورة من حيث التقطيع ومعالجة التشوه الحاصل من ذلك والحصول على دقة عالية. كذلك دراسة تأثير الأشعة تحت الحمراء على مخرجات الضوء المرئي والحصول على الصورة النهائية. اخيرا فان الصورة المندمجة والتي سوف تتشكل بواسطة المعدلات الوزنية&nbsp;&nbsp; سوف تكتشف بواسطة الضوء المرئي والأشعة تحت الحمراء لتوهج اللهب. ان خواص الصورة الناتجة والتي سوف تدرس بواسطة الحفاظ على الألوان والدقة العالية للصورة الرقمية من خلال تحسين الصورة الأصلية وتقليل الضوضاء. النتائج بينت ان خوارزمية Retinex &nbsp;&nbsp;أكثر ملائمة ومتقاربة في تحليل الصورة وتقليل التشوه الذي يحصل عليها وان الصورة المتولدة من اللهب ذات دقة ووضوح عال وان استجابة خوارزمية الرتنكس في التوزيع الوزني لتوهج الألوان الناتجة من شعلة الوقود الحيوي تبين انها ذات خصائص أعلى من الأنواع المستخدمة الأخرى.&nbsp;Image processing algorithms was more effected in modern processes to evaluate the flame characteristics such as height, length and thickness by taking digital image for flame by high speed camera for three different fuel types diesel, biodiesel and biofuel of jet flame by depend upon more variables effect such as mass flow rate, diameter of nozzle and compressed pressure. We will be applying two different mathematical methods in order to measuring some characteristics of diffusion flame. Where one depend upon Wiens distribution of a black body with MSR math-lab processing and another depend upon the intensity of the flame. These operations target to enhancing the exactitude of image segmentation and resolution. Secondly, feature extractions of the visible and infrared line images are performed, and the recognition of the target image is further completed. Finally, image fusion is performed by weighted averaging of the targets detected by visible light and infrared images The image properties are investigating by increase the knowledge of the color and resolution of digital image and enhancement the origin image by applying the concern algorithm and less the noise. The results show that the algorithm of retinex is suitable to analysis the digital image and not distortions on it
