Metaphors of London fog, smoke and mist in Victorian and Edwardian Art and Literature
Julian Wolfreys has argued that after 1850 writers employed stock images of the city without allowing them to transform their texts. This thesis argues, on the contrary, that metaphorical uses of London fog were complex and subtle during the Victorian and Edwardian periods, at least until 1914. Fog represented, in particular, formlessness and the dissolution of boundaries. Examining the idea of fog in literature, verse, newspaper accounts and journal articles, as well as in the visual arts, as part of a common discourse about London and the state of its inhabitants, this thesis charts how the metaphorical appropriation of this idea changed over time. Four of Dickens's novels are used to track his use of fog as part of a discourse of the natural and unnatural in individual and society, identifying it with London in progressively more negative terms. Visual representations of fog by Constable, Turner, Whistler, Monet, Markino, O'Connor, Roberts and Wyllie and Coburn showed an increasing readiness to engage with this discourse. Social tensions in the city in the 1880s were articulated in art as well as in fiction. Authors like Hay and Barr showed the destruction of London by its fog because of its inhabitants' supposed degeneracy. As the social threat receded, apocalyptic scenarios gave way to a more optimistic view in the work of Owen and others. Henry James used fog as a metaphorical representation of the boundaries of gendered behaviour in public, and the problems faced by women who crossed them. The dissertation also examines fog and individual transgression, in novels and short stories by Lowndes, Stevenson, Conan Doyle and Joseph Conrad. After 1914, fog was no more than a crude signifier of Victorian London in literature, film and, later, television, deployed as a cliche instead of the subtle metaphorical idea discussed in this thesis
The temporality of rhetoric: the spatialization of time in modern criticism
Every conception of criticism conceals a notion of time which informs the manner in which the critic conceives of history, representation and criticism itself. This thesis reveals the philosophies of time inherent in certain key modern critical concepts: allegory, irony and the sublime. Each concept opens a breach in time, a disruption of chronology. In each case this gap or aporia is emphatically closed, elided or denied. Taking the philosophy of time elaborated by Giorgio Agamben as an introductory proposition, my argument turns in Chapter One to the allegorical temporality which Walter Benjamin sees as the time of photography. The second chapter examines the aesthetics of the sublime as melancholic or mournful untimeliness. In Chapter Three, Paul de Man's conception of irony provides an exemplary instance of the denial of this troubling temporal predicament. In opposition to the foreclosure of the disturbing temporalities of criticism, history and representation, the thesis proposes a fundamental rethinking of the philosophy of time as it relates to these categories of reflection. In a reading of an inaugural meditation on the nature of time, and in examining certain key contemporary philosophical and critical texts, I argue for a critical attendance to that which eludes those modes of thought that attempt to map time as a recognizable and essentially spatial field. The Confessions of Augustine provide, in the fourth chapter, a model for thinking through the problems set up earlier: Augustine affords us, precisely, a means of conceiving of the gap or the interim. In the final chapter, this concept is developed with reference to the criticism of Arnold and Eliot, the fiction of Virginia Woolf and the philosophy of cinema derived from Deleuze and Lyotard. In conclusion, the philosophical implications of the thesis are placed in relation to a conception of the untimeliness of death
Machine learning based adaptive soft sensor for flash point inference in a refinery realtime process
In industrial control processes, certain characteristics are sometimes difficult to measure by a physical sensor due to technical and/or economic limitations. This fact is especially true in the petrochemical industry. Some of those quantities are especially crucial for operators and process safety. This is the case for the automotive diesel Flash Point Temperature (FT). Traditional methods for FT estimation are based on the study of the empirical inference between flammability properties and the denoted target magnitude. The necessary measures are taken indirectly by samples from the process and analyzing them in the laboratory, this process implies time (can take hours from collection to flash temperature measurement) and thus make it very difficult for real-time monitorization, which in fact results in security and economical losses. This study defines a procedure based on Machine Learning modules that demonstrate the power of real-time monitorization over real data from an important international refinery. As input, easily measured values provided in real-time, such as temperature, pressure, and hydraulic flow are used and a benchmark of different regressive algorithms for FT estimation is presented. The study highlights the importance of sequencing preprocessing techniques for the correct inference of values. The implementation of adaptive learning strategies achieves considerable economic benefits in the productization of this soft sensor. The validity of the method is tested in the reality of a refinery. In addition, real-world industrial data sets tend to be unstable and volatile, and the data is often affected by noise, outliers, irrelevant or unnecessary features, and missing data. This contribution demonstrates with the inclusion of a new concept, called an adaptive soft sensor, the importance of the dynamic adaptation of the conformed schemes based on Machine Learning through their combination with feature selection, dimensional reduction, and signal processing techniques. The applied psychology of addictive orientations : studies in a 12-step treatment context.
The clinical data for the studies was collected at The PROMIS Recovery Centre, a Minnesota Model treatmentc entre for addictions,w hich encouragesth e membership and use of the 12 step Anonymous Fellowships, and is abstinence based. The area of addiction is contextualised in a review chapter which focuses on research relating to the phenomenon of cross addiction. A study examining the concept of "addictive orientations" in male and female addicts is described, which develops a study conductedb y StephensonM, aggi, Lefever, & Morojele (1995). This presents study found a four factor solution which appeared to be subdivisions of the previously found Hedonism and Nurturance factors. Self orientated nurturance (both food dimensions, shopping and caffeine), Other orientated nurturance (both compulsive helping dimensions and work), Sensation seeking hedonism (Drugs, prescription drugs, nicotine and marginally alcohol), and Power related hedonism (Both relationship dimensions, sex and gambling. This concept of "addictive orientations" is further explored in a non-clinical population, where again a four factor solution was found, very similar to that in the clinical population. This was thought to indicate that in terms of addictive orientation a pattern already exists in this non-clinical population and that consideration should be given to why this is the case. These orientations are examined in terms of gender differences. It is suggested that the differences between genders reflect power-related role relationships between the sexes. In order to further elaborate the significance and meaning behind these orientations, the next two chapters look at the contribution of personality variables and how addictive orientations relate to psychiatric symptomatology. Personality variables were differentially, and to a considerable extent predictably involved with the four factors for both males and females.Conscientiousness as positively associated with "Other orientated Nurturance" and negatively associated with "Sensation seeking hedonism" (particularly for men). Neuroticism had a particularly strong association with the "Self orientated Nurturance" factor in the female population. More than twice the symptomatology variance was explained by the factor scores for females than it was for males. The most important factorial predictors for psychiatric symptomatology were the "Power related hedonism" factor for males, and "Self oriented nurturance" for females. The results are discussed from theoretical and treatment perspectives
Studies of strategic performance management for classical organizations theory & practice
Nowadays, the activities of "Performance Management" have spread very broadly in actually every part of business and management. There are numerous practitioners and researchers from very different disciplines, who are involved in exploring the different contents of performance management. In this thesis, some relevant historic developments in performance management are first reviewed. This includes various theories and frameworks of performance management. Then several management science techniques are developed for assessing performance management, including new methods in Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Soft System Methodology (SSM). A theoretical framework for performance management and its practical procedures (five phases) are developed for "classic" organizations using soft system thinking, and the relationship with the existing theories are explored. Eventually these results are applied in three case studies to verify our theoretical development. One of the main contributions of this work is to point out, and to systematically explore the basic idea that the effective forms and structures of performance management for an organization are likely to depend greatly on the organizational configuration, in order to coordinate well with other management activities in the organization, which has seemingly been neglected in the existing literature of performance management research in the sense that there exists little known research that associated particular forms of performance management with the explicit assumptions of organizational configuration. By applying SSM, this thesis logically derives some main functional blocks of performance management in 'classic' organizations and clarifies the relationships between performance management and other management activities. Furthermore, it develops some new tools and procedures, which can hierarchically decompose organizational strategies and produce a practical model of specific implementation steps for "classic" organizations. Our approach integrates popular types of performance management models. Last but not least, this thesis presents findings from three major cases, which are quite different organizations in terms of management styles, ownership, and operating environment, to illustrate the fliexbility of the developed theoretical framework
The impact of intellectual disability and sport expertise on cognitive and executive functions.
Our aim was to identify the suitability of three assessment tools (i.e., Flanker test, Updating Word Span, and Color Trails Test) for future inclusion in the classification process of elite Paralympic athletes with intellectual disability and to assess the strength of the relation between Executive function (EF) and intelligence. Cognitive and EF assessments were performed on 59 participants, divided into four groups according to their cognitive level (with versus without intellectual disability) and sport expertise (athlete versus novice). Inhibition and working memory update skills were implicated in people with intellectual disability. For set-shifting, a more nuanced picture was observed. Strong associations between EF and intelligence was found in people with intellectual disability. Working memory updating and set-shifting are relevant EF skills to assess in the context of elite sport; however, culture-free alternatives for the Updating Word Span test are needed, and alternatives to the Color Trails Test, less reliant on literacy skills are required

How do technologists do āICT for developmentā? A contextualised perspective on ICT4D in South Africa
We take a layered approach to contextualise Information Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D) to understand digital technologistsā motivations to implement technologies to address socio-economic issues based on their capabilities and kinship affiliations. We adopt an interpretive approach to conducting an inductive qualitative study of digital technologists based in South Africa. We propose three mechanisms (emotional connectedness, user-centred technologies, and symbiotic relations) through which digital technologists undertake ICT4D to exercise their agency and enhance the socio-economic well-being of disadvantaged members of society. Taking the kinship perspective and capability approach as underlying motivations for undertaking ICT4D projects allows us to contribute to the ICT4D literature
Bitcoin as a Digital Commodity
The paper demonstrates that Bitcoin is not money but rather a digital commodity that has value but no value-added. We show that both the production of and the speculation with Bitcoin draw from the existing global pool of value-added. By extending the Classical Political Economy approach and the New Interpretation of the labour theory of value to the domain of digital commodities, the paper argues that Bitcoin mining is an automated reproduction process that requires no direct (living) labour and thus creates no new value. Bitcoin, in this regard, is not ādigital goldā. Between sectors, Bitcoin mining redistributes wealth and value-added already in existence, while Bitcoin miners with more computational power compete to appropriate the mining profits within the blockchain. The Bitcoin blockchain then creates rivalry in both the ownership and the use of the digital commodity through non-legal means. Our approach can be further expanded to the larger domain of automated digital commodities that are reproducible without the expenditure of direct, living labour

Effect of Prior Plastic Strain on the High Temperature Creep Deformation and Damage Response of Type 316H Stainless Steel
Creep damage in ductile alloys is associated with creep deformation, crack growth and starts with the nucleation and growth of cavities. Under sustained high temperature and stress conditions, growing cavities can start to coalesce leading to microcracking and ultimate failure of a component. This mechanism can limit the lifetime of power plant components operating at high temperature. Many engineering components enter service in a cold-worked or prestrained condition as a result of manufacturing processes such as bending, forging, welding etc. Such pre-conditioning alters the creep resistance of the material significantly. Its effect on the creep deformation properties of a structure during service, and creep damage response can be advantageous for some materials but disadvantageous for others. Hence it is crucial to understand the effects of prior plastic strain when assessing the lifetime and safety of power plant components, for example in the context of nuclear power generation. The research set out in this thesis aims to examine the effect of prior plastic strain on subsequent creep deformation behaviour and development of damage in AISI Type 316H austenitic stainless steel, a material widely used in the fleet of Advanced Gas Cooled reactors operated by EDF Energy in the UK.
A novel cylindrical hourglass-shaped test specimen was designed for the research where a constant applied load provided a variation in uniaxial stress and associated creep strain rate along the hourglass gauge length. A further innovation in this PhD work involved exploiting the potential of 3D digital image correlation (3D-DIC) for measuring spatially resolved creep deformation along the hourglass gauge section over long duration creep tests at a high temperature of 550ā¦C. The scope of testing included load-controlled creep tests carried out on 5 samples where 0, 4, 8, 12 and 16% of prior tensile plastic strain was introduced at room temperature. The prestraining was carried out on cylindrical samples before the hourglass shape was machined, ensuring a uniform level of prior plastic strain was present along the gauge section prior to creep experiments. It was found that prior plastic strain increased the creep resistance of the as-received material. Increasing plastic strain decreased the creep strain rate and creep ductility. On the other hand, it resulted in an increase in time to failure.
After creep failure at the maximum stress location, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) was utilised to investigate changes in creep cavitational damage as a function of applied stress, level of creep strain and prior plastic strain at room temperature. Two sets of experiments were performed using the D11 instrument at the ILL reactor source (France) and the SANS2D instrument at the ISIS spallation source (UK). Very similar scattering results were obtained from the two instruments. Furthermore, SANS data from the instruments were analysed using two independent analysis routes; a maximum entropy method (MAXE) and a Monte Carlo algorithm (McSAS). Since SANS is an indirect method for measuring creep cavitation, the microstructure of the specimens was also investigated using qualitative scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in order to interpret and verify the SANS cavitation observations. The SANS investigations revealed a strong correlation between the volume fraction and number density of creep cavities with applied stress and creep strain. Furthermore, an increasing number density of small creep cavities as a function of prior plastic strain was observed and verified by qualitative SEM studies. This is new evidence that prior plastic strain, induced at room temperature, introduces specific cavitational damage in Type 316H stainless steel. The macroscopic damage calculation based on the stress modified ductility exhaustion model revealed that the majority of damage for the series of prestrained specimens is caused by plastic hole growth as a consequence of inducing prior plastic strain rather than due to creep related diffusion processes

The Theory of International Prices: A Classical Production-Based Approach
This thesis is an investigation into the theory of international prices, following a classical production-based approach. The thesis provides a systematic investigation of different closures to the system of international prices, focusing on the types of assumptions employed by the literature. Three main closures are considered: balanced trade, equal growth rates, and free international mobility of capital. Each of these closures is associated with one or more contributions in the history of thought. Through careful evaluation, the thesis identifies theoretical and empirical shortcomings with each closure.
The thesis then proposes a novel closure to the system of international prices based on given wage disparities. This is done in three successive stages through a step-by-step layering process where each layer adds more realistic and complex scenarios. The first layer builds from a pure labour model; it provides the first formalization of Pasinettiās contributions to international trade theory. The second layer introduces trade in intermediate goods. The third layer introduces positive rates of profit. For each layer, the thesis analyses the conditions required for countries to specialize according to comparative or absolute advantage. It shows that comparative advantage cannot determine specialization by itself; it needs additional assumptions. Furthermore, the thesis argues that given wage disparities are sufficient to determine absolute cost advantages. International prices and specialization are determined based on absolute cost advantages, compatible with the classical process of price competition
