    Optimisation de réseaux de neurones à décharges avec contraintes matérielles pour processeur neuromorphique

    Les modèles informatiques basés sur l'apprentissage machine ont démarré la seconde révolution de l'intelligence artificielle. Capables d'atteindre des performances que l'on crut inimaginables au préalable, ces modèles semblent devenir partie courante dans plusieurs domaines. La face cachée de ceux-ci est que l'énergie consommée pour l'apprentissage, et l'utilisation de ces techniques, est colossale. La dernière décennie a été marquée par l'arrivée de plusieurs processeurs neuromorphiques pouvant simuler des réseaux de neurones avec une faible consommation d'énergie. Ces processeurs offrent une alternative aux conventionnelles cartes graphiques qui demeurent à ce jour essentielles au domaine. Ces processeurs sont capables de réduire la consommation d'énergie en utilisant un modèle de neurone événementiel, plus communément appelé neurone à décharge. Ce type de neurone est fondamentalement différent du modèle classique, et possède un aspect temporel important. Les méthodes, algorithmes et outils développés pour le modèle de neurone classique ne sont pas adaptés aux neurones à décharges. Cette thèse de doctorat décrit plusieurs approches fondamentales, dédiées à la création de processeurs neuromorphiques analogiques, qui permettent de pallier l'écart existant entre les systèmes à base de neurones conventionnels et à décharges. Dans un premier temps, nous présentons une nouvelle règle de plasticité synaptique permettant l'apprentissage non supervisé des réseaux de neurones récurrents utilisant ce nouveau type de neurone. Puis, nous proposons deux nouvelles méthodes pour la conception des topologies de ce même type de réseau. Finalement, nous améliorons les techniques d'apprentissage supervisé en augmentant la capacité de mémoire de réseaux récurrents. Les éléments de cette thèse marient l'inspiration biologique du cerveau, l'ingénierie neuromorphique et l'informatique fondamentale pour permettre d'optimiser les réseaux de neurones pouvant fonctionner sur des processeurs neuromorphiques analogiques

    Sensor-based artificial intelligence to support people with cognitive and physical disorders

    A substantial portion of the world's population deals with disability. Many disabled people do not have equal access to healthcare, education, and employment opportunities, do not receive specific disability-related services, and experience exclusion from everyday life activities. One way to face these issues is through the use of healthcare technologies. Unfortunately, there is a large amount of diverse and heterogeneous disabilities, which require ad-hoc and personalized solutions. Moreover, the design and implementation of effective and efficient technologies is a complex and expensive process involving challenging issues, including usability and acceptability. The work presented in this thesis aims to improve the current state of technologies available to support people with disorders affecting the mind or the motor system by proposing the use of sensors coupled with signal processing methods and artificial intelligence algorithms. The first part of the thesis focused on mental state monitoring. We investigated the application of a low-cost portable electroencephalography sensor and supervised learning methods to evaluate a person's attention. Indeed, the analysis of attention has several purposes, including the diagnosis and rehabilitation of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. A novel dataset was collected from volunteers during an image annotation task, and used for the experimental evaluation using different machine learning techniques. Then, in the second part of the thesis, we focused on addressing limitations related to motor disability. We introduced the use of graph neural networks to process high-density electromyography data for upper limbs amputees’ movement/grasping intention recognition for enabling the use of robotic prostheses. High-density electromyography sensors can simultaneously acquire electromyography signals from different parts of the muscle, providing a large amount of spatio-temporal information that needs to be properly exploited to improve recognition accuracy. The investigation of the approach was conducted using a recent real-world dataset consisting of electromyography signals collected from 20 volunteers while performing 65 different gestures. In the final part of the thesis, we developed a prototype of a versatile interactive system that can be useful to people with different types of disabilities. The system can maintain a food diary for frail people with nutrition problems, such as people with neurocognitive diseases or frail elderly people, which may have difficulties due to forgetfulness or physical issues. The novel architecture automatically recognizes the preparation of food at home, in a privacy-preserving and unobtrusive way, exploiting air quality data acquired from a commercial sensor, statistical features extraction, and a deep neural network. A robotic system prototype is used to simplify the interaction with the inhabitant. For this work, a large dataset of annotated sensor data acquired over a period of 8 months from different individuals in different homes was collected. Overall, the results achieved in the thesis are promising, and pave the way for several real-world implementations and future research directions

    DYNAMIC SELF-ORGANISED NEURAL NETWORK INSPIRED BY THE IMMUNE ALGORITHM FOR FINANCIAL TIME SERIES PREDICTION AND MEDICAL DATA CLASSIFICATION

    Artificial neural networks have been proposed as useful tools in time series analysis in a variety of applications. They are capable of providing good solutions for a variety of problems, including classification and prediction. However, for time series analysis, it must be taken into account that the variables of data are related to the time dimension and are highly correlated. The main aim of this research work is to investigate and develop efficient dynamic neural networks in order to deal with data analysis issues. This research work proposes a novel dynamic self-organised multilayer neural network based on the immune algorithm for financial time series prediction and biomedical signal classification, combining the properties of both recurrent and self-organised neural networks. The first case study that has been addressed in this thesis is prediction of financial time series. The financial time series signal is in the form of historical prices of different companies. The future prediction of price in financial time series enables businesses to make profits by predicting or simply guessing these prices based on some historical data. However, the financial time series signal exhibits a highly random behaviour, which is non-stationary and nonlinear in nature. Therefore, the prediction of this type of time series is very challenging. In this thesis, a number of experiments have been simulated to evaluate the ability of the designed recurrent neural network to forecast the future value of financial time series. The resulting forecast made by the proposed network shows substantial profits on financial historical signals when compared to the self-organised hidden layer inspired by immune algorithm and multilayer perceptron neural networks. These results suggest that the proposed dynamic neural networks has a better ability to capture the chaotic movement in financial signals. The second case that has been addressed in this thesis is for predicting preterm birth and diagnosing preterm labour. One of the most challenging tasks currently facing the healthcare community is the identification of preterm labour, which has important significances for both healthcare and the economy. Premature birth occurs when the baby is born before completion of the 37-week gestation period. Incomplete understanding of the physiology of the uterus and parturition means that premature labour prediction is a difficult task. The early prediction of preterm births could help to improve prevention, through appropriate medical and lifestyle interventions. One promising method is the use of Electrohysterography. This method records the uterine electrical activity during pregnancy. In this thesis, the proposed dynamic neural network has been used for classifying between term and preterm labour using uterine signals. The results indicated that the proposed network generated improved classification accuracy in comparison to the benchmarked neural network architectures

    Brain Computer Interfaces and Emotional Involvement: Theory, Research, and Applications

    This reprint is dedicated to the study of brain activity related to emotional and attentional involvement as measured by Brain–computer interface (BCI) systems designed for different purposes. A BCI system can translate brain signals (e.g., electric or hemodynamic brain activity indicators) into a command to execute an action in the BCI application (e.g., a wheelchair, the cursor on the screen, a spelling device or a game). These tools have the advantage of having real-time access to the ongoing brain activity of the individual, which can provide insight into the user’s emotional and attentional states by training a classification algorithm to recognize mental states. The success of BCI systems in contemporary neuroscientific research relies on the fact that they allow one to “think outside the lab”. The integration of technological solutions, artificial intelligence and cognitive science allowed and will allow researchers to envision more and more applications for the future. The clinical and everyday uses are described with the aim to invite readers to open their minds to imagine potential further developments

    Deep Multi Temporal Scale Networks for Human Motion Analysis

    The movement of human beings appears to respond to a complex motor system that contains signals at different hierarchical levels. For example, an action such as ``grasping a glass on a table'' represents a high-level action, but to perform this task, the body needs several motor inputs that include the activation of different joints of the body (shoulder, arm, hand, fingers, etc.). Each of these different joints/muscles have a different size, responsiveness, and precision with a complex non-linearly stratified temporal dimension where every muscle has its temporal scale. Parts such as the fingers responds much faster to brain input than more voluminous body parts such as the shoulder. The cooperation we have when we perform an action produces smooth, effective, and expressive movement in a complex multiple temporal scale cognitive task. Following this layered structure, the human body can be described as a kinematic tree, consisting of joints connected. Although it is nowadays well known that human movement and its perception are characterised by multiple temporal scales, very few works in the literature are focused on studying this particular property. In this thesis, we will focus on the analysis of human movement using data-driven techniques. In particular, we will focus on the non-verbal aspects of human movement, with an emphasis on full-body movements. The data-driven methods can interpret the information in the data by searching for rules, associations or patterns that can represent the relationships between input (e.g. the human action acquired with sensors) and output (e.g. the type of action performed). Furthermore, these models may represent a new research frontier as they can analyse large masses of data and focus on aspects that even an expert user might miss. The literature on data-driven models proposes two families of methods that can process time series and human movement. The first family, called shallow models, extract features from the time series that can help the learning algorithm find associations in the data. These features are identified and designed by domain experts who can identify the best ones for the problem faced. On the other hand, the second family avoids this phase of extraction by the human expert since the models themselves can identify the best set of features to optimise the learning of the model. In this thesis, we will provide a method that can apply the multi-temporal scales property of the human motion domain to deep learning models, the only data-driven models that can be extended to handle this property. We will ask ourselves two questions: what happens if we apply knowledge about how human movements are performed to deep learning models? Can this knowledge improve current automatic recognition standards? In order to prove the validity of our study, we collected data and tested our hypothesis in specially designed experiments. Results support both the proposal and the need for the use of deep multi-scale models as a tool to better understand human movement and its multiple time-scale nature

    2022 roadmap on neuromorphic computing and engineering

    Modern computation based on von Neumann architecture is now a mature cutting-edge science. In the von Neumann architecture, processing and memory units are implemented as separate blocks interchanging data intensively and continuously. This data transfer is responsible for a large part of the power consumption. The next generation computer technology is expected to solve problems at the exascale with 1018^{18} calculations each second. Even though these future computers will be incredibly powerful, if they are based on von Neumann type architectures, they will consume between 20 and 30 megawatts of power and will not have intrinsic physically built-in capabilities to learn or deal with complex data as our brain does. These needs can be addressed by neuromorphic computing systems which are inspired by the biological concepts of the human brain. This new generation of computers has the potential to be used for the storage and processing of large amounts of digital information with much lower power consumption than conventional processors. Among their potential future applications, an important niche is moving the control from data centers to edge devices. The aim of this roadmap is to present a snapshot of the present state of neuromorphic technology and provide an opinion on the challenges and opportunities that the future holds in the major areas of neuromorphic technology, namely materials, devices, neuromorphic circuits, neuromorphic algorithms, applications, and ethics. The roadmap is a collection of perspectives where leading researchers in the neuromorphic community provide their own view about the current state and the future challenges for each research area. We hope that this roadmap will be a useful resource by providing a concise yet comprehensive introduction to readers outside this field, for those who are just entering the field, as well as providing future perspectives for those who are well established in the neuromorphic computing community
