Verification and Parameter Synthesis for Real-Time Programs using Refinement of Trace Abstraction
We address the safety verification and synthesis problems for real-time
systems. We introduce real-time programs that are made of instructions that can
perform assignments to discrete and real-valued variables. They are general
enough to capture interesting classes of timed systems such as timed automata,
stopwatch automata, time(d) Petri nets and hybrid automata.
We propose a semi-algorithm using refinement of trace abstractions to solve
both the reachability verification problem and the parameter synthesis problem
for real-time programs.
All of the algorithms proposed have been implemented and we have conducted a
series of experiments, comparing the performance of our new approach to
state-of-the-art tools in classical reachability, robustness analysis and
parameter synthesis for timed systems. We show that our new method provides
solutions to problems which are unsolvable by the current state-of-the-art
tools
When to Trust AI: Advances and Challenges for Certification of Neural Networks
Artificial intelligence (AI) has been advancing at a fast pace and it is now
poised for deployment in a wide range of applications, such as autonomous
systems, medical diagnosis and natural language processing. Early adoption of
AI technology for real-world applications has not been without problems,
particularly for neural networks, which may be unstable and susceptible to
adversarial examples. In the longer term, appropriate safety assurance
techniques need to be developed to reduce potential harm due to avoidable
system failures and ensure trustworthiness. Focusing on certification and
explainability, this paper provides an overview of techniques that have been
developed to ensure safety of AI decisions and discusses future challenges
Tools and Algorithms for the Construction and Analysis of Systems
This open access two-volume set constitutes the proceedings of the 27th International Conference on Tools and Algorithms for the Construction and Analysis of Systems, TACAS 2021, which was held during March 27 – April 1, 2021, as part of the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software, ETAPS 2021. The conference was planned to take place in Luxembourg and changed to an online format due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The total of 41 full papers presented in the proceedings was carefully reviewed and selected from 141 submissions. Framework for classifying logical operators in stabilizer codes
Entanglement, as studied in quantum information science, and non-local
quantum correlations, as studied in condensed matter physics, are fundamentally
akin to each other. However, their relationship is often hard to quantify due
to the lack of a general approach to study both on the same footing. In
particular, while entanglement and non-local correlations are properties of
states, both arise from symmetries of global operators that commute with the
system Hamiltonian. Here, we introduce a framework for completely classifying
the local and non-local properties of all such global operators, given the
Hamiltonian and a bi-partitioning of the system. This framework is limited to
descriptions based on stabilizer quantum codes, but may be generalized. We
illustrate the use of this framework to study entanglement and non-local
correlations by analyzing global symmetries in topological order, distribution
of entanglement and entanglement entropy.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figure

Certified Roundoff Error Bounds Using Semidefinite Programming.
Roundoff errors cannot be avoided when implementing numerical programs with finite precision. The ability to reason about rounding is especially important if one wants to explore a range of potential representations, for instance for FPGAs or custom hardware implementation. This problem becomes challenging when the program does not employ solely linear operations as non-linearities are inherent to many interesting computational problems in real-world applications. Existing solutions to reasoning are limited in the presence of nonlinear correlations between variables, leading to either imprecise bounds or high analysis time. Furthermore, while it is easy to implement a straightforward method such as interval arithmetic, sophisticated techniques are less straightforward to implement in a formal setting. Thus there is a need for methods which output certificates that can be formally validated inside a proof assistant. We present a framework to provide upper bounds on absolute roundoff errors. This framework is based on optimization techniques employing semidefinite programming and sums of squares certificates, which can be formally checked inside the Coq theorem prover. Our tool covers a wide range of nonlinear programs, including polynomials and transcendental operations as well as conditional statements. We illustrate the efficiency and precision of this tool on non-trivial programs coming from biology, optimization and space control. Our tool produces more precise error bounds for 37 percent of all programs and yields better performance in 73 percent of all programs
Automata-Based Software Model Checking of Hyperproperties
We develop model checking algorithms for Temporal Stream Logic (TSL) and
Hyper Temporal Stream Logic (HyperTSL) modulo theories. TSL extends Linear
Temporal Logic (LTL) with memory cells, functions and predicates, making it a
convenient and expressive logic to reason over software and other systems with
infinite data domains. HyperTSL further extends TSL to the specification of
hyperproperties - properties that relate multiple system executions. As such,
HyperTSL can express information flow policies like noninterference in software
systems. We augment HyperTSL with theories, resulting in HyperTSL(T),and build
on methods from LTL software verification to obtain model checking algorithms
for TSL and HyperTSL(T). This results in a sound but necessarily incomplete
algorithm for specifications contained in the forall*exists* fragment of
HyperTSL(T). Our approach constitutes the first software model checking
algorithm for temporal hyperproperties with quantifier alternations that does
not rely on a finite-state abstraction
