    Comparative Study of the Mobile Learning Architectures

    International audienceWith the emergence of mobile devices (Smart Phone, PDA, UMPC, game consoles, etc.), learning is changing from electronic learning (e-Learning) to mobile learning (m-learning). In fact, due to the mobility feature, it seems that the m-learning have to be adapted with the change within the context. Several researches addressed this issue and implemented a mobile learning environment to prove its usefulness and feasibility in various domains. In this article, we conduct a comparative study between a list of mobile learning architectures and methods that are presented in the literature. The performance of these architectures is evaluated based on several criteria, such as the adaptation management, which is an important parameter for the management and customization of the learning resources for the learners, as well as the environment, which is a core part of mobile learning systems

    Providing Real-time Driver Advisories in Connected Vehicles: A Data-Driven Approach Supported by Field Experimentation

    Approximately 94\% of the annual transportation crashes in the U.S. involve driver errors and violations contributing to the $1 Trillion losses in the economy. Recent V2X communication technologies enabled by Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) and Cellular-V2X (C-V2X) can provide cost-effective solutions for many of these transportation safety applications and help reduce crashes up to 85%. This research aims towards two primary goals. First, understanding the feasibility of deploying V2V-based safety critical applications under the constraints of limited communication ranges and adverse roadway conditions. Second, to develop a prototype application for providing real-time advisories for hazardous driving behaviors and to notify neighboring vehicles using available wireless communication platform. Towards accomplishing the first goal, we have developed a mathematical model to quantify V2V communication parameters and constraints pertaining to a DSRC-based “Safe pass advisory” application and validated the theoretical model using field experiments by measuring the communication ranges between two oncoming vehicles. We also investigated the impacts of varying altitudes, vehicle-interior obstacles, and OBU placement on V2V communication reliability and its implications. Along the direction of the second goal, we derived a data-driven model to characterize the acceleration/deceleration profile of a regular passenger vehicle with respect to speed and throttle position. As a proof of concept demonstration, we implemented an IoT-based communication architecture for disseminating the hazardous driving alerts to vulnerable drivers through cellular and/or V2X communication infrastructure

    Ushering in a New Dawn : Demand-Side Local Flexibility Platform Governance and Design in the Finnish Energy Markets

    Energy ecosystems are under a significant transition. Local flexibility marketplaces (LFM) and platforms are argued to have significant potential in contributing to such a transition. The purpose of this study was to answer the following research question: how do market conditions and stakeholders shape emerging LFM platform governance choices? We approached this objective with an exploratory single-case study by conducting ten semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders in the Finnish energy ecosystem. The results of the content and pattern analyses revealed the key challenges to LFM implementation such as the current regulatory treatment of flexibility, high costs of gadget installations, and ensuring sufficient liquidity in the market. In addition, we also demonstrated that despite such barriers, the Finnish ecosystem is largely pragmatic about LFMs’ in its midst. All in all, we contributed to the non-technological streams of LFM literature by developing an exhaustive framework with four distinctive dimensions (i.e., ecosystem readiness, value-creation logic, platform architecture and governance, platform competitiveness) for LFM development, which helps academics, practitioners, and policy-makers to understand how novel platforms emerge and develop.© 2021 by the authors.     AUGMENTED REALITY APPS FOR CHILDREN TO LEARN APHABET THROUGH STORYTELLING

    Everybody deserves a proper education. However, there are parents out there struggling to teach their kids to read and write due to their inability to teach them properly. Therefore, this project is going to explore the possibility of using augmented reality combined with storytelling as a medium to teach children to learn alphabet. With the existence of variety of students around us, problems tend to occurs when the teaching and learning process are going on. Students tend to have different learning curve. Sometimes they just refuse to learn altogether. These problems support the designation of this project which is to overcome the cause of illiterate among adults by starting early in terms of learning alphabet using augmented reality and storytelling. Exploring further into the project, analysis, planning, design, testing and implementation are going to be carried out to support the progress of this project. As a result, an android application that is able to support the learning of alphabet through storytelling is going to be built

    Job Searching Mobile Application using Location Awareness

    This document provides the description for the FYP project titled "job Searching Mobile Application using Location Awareness" .Location awareness is an important feature that could help the user to know the availability of job vacancy at their current location. However, the current job searching websites does not equip with this feature. Therefore, the objective of the research paper is to study how location awareness feature can be applied in job searching application using mobile computing as the platform. This mobile application was developed for Android Operating System, which it could help the user to search for part time job vacancy using location awareness feature. The location awareness features could be done in mobile application using the Global Positioning Technology (GPS) which it will detect the user's longitude and latitude. Subsequently, the longitude and latitude will be converted into strings and will be compared with the database. The data that match the database will be prompted to user. The mobile application has gone through the user acceptance test with 30 users has tested the software. Using Android, an open source operating system as the platform of the mobile application, it targeted the user with Android smart phone to benefit using this mobile application. As the conclusion, location awareness is a new feature that is relevant to job searching process and it has been proven with the development of this mobile application

    Revolutionising Public Private Partnerships: A Transition to the Fifth Industrial Revolution

    Purpose: The purpose of this article is to examine Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) in the Fifth Industrial Revolution (5IR). Government does not have the capacity to deliver services by itself. As a result, PPP have played an important role to assist government in delivering services in an efficient and reliable manner. Amongst the benefits of PPPs are value for money, risk transfer and affordability. Partnerships are increasingly important to assist government in achieving development goals. The fourth industrial revolution (4IR) presents a number of implications in terms of government service delivery. PPPs are necessary to navigate these changes. This article aims to determine how PPPs can be improved to transition to the 5IR. The 5IR entails a supersmart society where humans are the pivotal link in overseeing technology. Methodology: This article is descriptive and conceptual in nature. Unobtrusive methods are used to synthesise and integrate extant research. Findings: A conceptual model is developed to illustrate the necessary elements in forming a PPP ecosystem that is relevant to the 5IR and human-centric. Originality/Value: Very little research has been done on the 5IR, particularly no research has been done on the purpose, scope and nature of public private collaboration for improving PPPs in the 5IR

    A Managerial Analysis of Urban Parcel Delivery: A Lean Business Approach

    The improper integration of traditional transportation modes with low emissions vehicles can generate a price war that reduces the service quality, undermining the efficiency and the profitability of parcel delivery operators. This paper aims to provide managerial insights to design a win-win strategy for the co-existence of traditional and green business models. In doing so, we adopt a multi-disciplinary approach that integrates a qualitative analysis through a Lean Business methodology, named GUEST, with a quantitative analysis based on simulation-optimisation techniques. This kind of holistic vision has received little attention in the literature. The first analysis investigates the parcel delivery industry with an emphasis on the main business models involved, their costs and revenues structures, while the quantitative part aims to simulate the system and extract sustainable policies. In particular, results highlight that in deploying mixed-fleet policies, the decision-makers have to focus both on the environmental sustainability that benefits from the adoption of low-emission vehicles, and on the operational feasibility and economic sustainability of the two services. In this direction, the paper suggests some managerial insights concerning the split of the customer demand between traditional and green operators, according to the classes of parcels and geographical areas of the city

    IoT Notifications: from disruption to benefit - Architectures for the future of notifications in the IoT

    The growing number of mobile and IoT devices able to generate and show incoming notifications is fostering the spread of notifications in people lives. Nonetheless, although users are getting used to them, their presence is not always perceived as a benefit by recipients. With the aim of improving user experience with notifications, two different approaches are presented in this dissertation. The former acts at the distribution level, i.e., notifications are intercepted and then a system decides if, when, and how to show them; while the latter acts at the design level, i.e., notifications and their distribution strategies are designed with the aim of reducing user disruption and exploiting all the benefits that the availability of multiple devices could bring. An IoT architecture is proposed for each approach: the Smart Notification System that relies on machine learning algorithms to adequately manage incoming notifications, and the XDN (Cross-Device Notification) framework that assists developers in creating cross-device notifications by scripting. The modular nature of both architectures allowed the simultaneous development and test of different independent but compatible subsystems and their exploitation in preliminary deployment sessions. The results, feedbacks and lessons learned from such sessions can foster the development of future solutions in the IoT notifications field and related domains
