    The Top Quark Production Asymmetries AFBtA_{FB}^t and AFBℓA_{FB}^{\ell}

    A large forward-backward asymmetry is seen in both the top quark rapidity distribution AFBtA_{FB}^t and in the rapidity distribution of charged leptons AFBℓA_{FB}^\ell from top quarks produced at the Tevatron. We study the kinematic and dynamic aspects of the relationship of the two observables arising from the spin correlation between the charged lepton and the top quark with different polarization states. We emphasize the value of both measurements, and we conclude that a new physics model which produces more right-handed than left-handed top quarks is favored by the present data.Comment: accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter

    Farmers’ management of functional biodiversity goes beyond pest management in organic European apple orchards

    Supporting functional biodiversity (FB), which provides natural pest regulation, is an environmentally sound and promising approach to reduce pesticide use in perennial cultures such as apple, especially in organic farming. However, little is known about farmers’ practices and motivations to implement techniques that favor FB, especially whether or not they really expect anything from FB in terms of pest regulation. In fact, FB-supporting techniques (FB-techniques) are massively questioned by practitioners due to inadequate information about their effectiveness. An interview survey was performed in eight European countries(i) to describe farmers’ practices and identify promising FB-techniques: (ii) to better understand their perceptions of and values associated with FB; and (iii) to identify potential drivers of (non-)adoption. Fifty-five advisors and 125 orchard managers with various degrees of experience and convictions about FB were interviewed and a total of 24 different FB-techniques which can be assigned to three different categories (ecological infrastructures, farming practices and redesign techniques) were described. Some were well-established measures (e.g., hedges and bird houses), while others were more marginal and more recent (e.g., animal introduction and compost). On average, farmers combined more than four techniques that had been implemented over a period of 13 years, especially during their establishment or conversion period. In general, it was difficult for farmers to evaluate the effectiveness of individual FB-techniques on pest regulation. They considered FB-techniques as a whole, targeting multiple species, and valued multiple ecosystem services in addition to pest regulation. The techniques implemented and their associated values differed among farmers who adopted various approaches towards FB. Three different approaches were defined: passive, active and integrated. Their appraisal of FB is even more complex because it may change with time and experience. These findings provide empirical evidence that the practical implementation of promising techniques remains a challenge, considering the diversity of situations and evaluation criteria. Increased cooperation between researchers, farmers and advisors should more effectively target research, advisory support and communication to meet farmers’ needs and perceptions

    Frequency-dependent AVO attribute: theory and example

    Fluid-saturated rocks generally have seismic velocities that depend upon frequency. Exploring this property may help us discriminate different fluids from seismic data. In this paper, we introduce a scheme to calculate a frequency-dependent AVO attribute in order to estimate seismic dispersion from pre-stack data, and apply it to North Sea data. The scheme essentially combines the two-term approximation of Smith and Gidlow (1987) with the method of spectral decomposition based on the Wigner-Ville distribution, which is used to achieve high resolution. The result suggests the potential of this method for detection of seismic dispersion due to fluid saturation

    Two-Parton Contribution to the Heavy-Quark Forward-Backward Asymmetry in NNLO QCD

    Forward-backward asymmetries, AFBQA_{FB}^Q, are important observables for the determination of the neutral-current couplings of heavy quarks in inclusive heavy quark production, e+e−→γ∗,Z∗→Q+Xe^+ e^- \to \gamma^*, Z^* \to Q +X. In view of the measurement perspectives on AFBQA_{FB}^Q at a future linear collider, precise predictions of AFBQA_{FB}^Q are required for massive quarks. We compute the contribution of the QQˉQ \bar Q final state to AFBQA_{FB}^Q to order \as^2 in the QCD coupling. We provide general formulae, and we show that this contribution to AFBQA_{FB}^Q is infrared-finite. We evaluate these two-parton contributions for bb and cc quarks on and near the ZZ resonance, and for tt quarks above threshold. Moreover, near the ttˉt \bar t threshold we obtain, by expanding in the heavy-quark velocity ÎČ\beta, an expression for AFBttˉA_{FB}^{t \bar t} to order \as^2 and NNLL in ÎČ\beta. This quantity is equal, to this order in ÎČ\beta, to the complete forward-backward asymmetry AFBtA_{FB}^t.Comment: latex, 26 pages, 2 tables, 17 figure

    CP-Violation in Bosonic Sector of SM with two Higgs Doublets

    We investigate CP-violation effects in the bosonic sector of the Standard Model (SM) with two Higgs doublets. First we calculate the mass eigenstates of the physical neutral Higgses for small but nonzero CP-violation parameter Ο∗\xi_{\ast}, and then a ``forward-backward'' asymmetry Afb{\cal A}_{fb} for the decay H→W+W−ZH \to W^+W^-Z that would be a signal of CP-violation. Although the effects are in general small (Afb=Γfb/Γ∌O(10−3){\cal A}_{fb} = \Gamma_{fb}/\Gamma \sim {\cal O}(10^{-3})), Afb{\cal A}_{fb} turns out to be a rather clean signal of CP-violation, since neither the CP-conserving final state interactions nor the direct production background events contribute to Γfb\Gamma_{fb}. The process is a counterexample to the widespread belief that CP-violation processes must involve fermions. The CKM-type CP-violation effects that could in principle also contribute to Afb{\cal A}_{fb} are negligible.
