    Gear Faults Analysis Using Finite Element Method

    In this study, gear faults analysis has been conducted by Finite Element Method (FEM) using ANSYS Software. It was conducted in order to investigate how failure modes in gears affect the gear mechanism. There are many failure modes in gear namely tooth crack, pitting, wear and scuffing. These modes affect gear mechanism in various ways and if not detected in early stage they may lead to a total system failure. The examples of system failure are high vibration state, loud noise, less power transmitted and fracture of teeth. In this study, the author will investigate how each failure modes will affect the frequency response of the system. At the end of the study, the difference of amplitude (deformation of a single tooth) between failure modes was determined to reveal the most risky faul

    Diagnostics of gear faults using ensemble empirical mode decomposition, hybrid binary bat algorithm and machine learning algorithms

    Early fault detection is a challenge in gear fault diagnosis. In particular, efficient feature extraction and feature selection is a key issue to automatic condition monitoring and fault diagnosis processes. In order to focus on those issues, this paper presents a study that uses ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) to extract features and hybrid binary bat algorithm (HBBA) hybridized with machine learning algorithm to reduce the dimensionality as well to select the predominant features which contains the necessary discriminative information. Efficiency of the approaches are evaluated using standard classification metrics such as Nearest neighbours, C4.5, DTNB, K star and JRip. The gear fault experiments were conducted, acquired the vibration signals for different gear states such as normal, frosting, pitting and crack, under constant motor speed and constant load. The proposed method is applied to identify the different gear faults at early stage and the results demonstrate its effectiveness

    Integrated Prognostics Observer for Condition Monitoring of an Automated Manual Transmission Dry Clutch System

    The closed loop feedback control system of an Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) electro-pneumatic clutch actuator is used for intelligent real time condition monitoring, enhanced diagnostics and prognostic health management of the dry clutch system, by integrating with the existing gearbox prognostics observer. The real-time sensor data of the clutch actuator piston position is analyzed for monitoring the condition of the clutch system. Original parameters of the new clutch are stored in the Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-only Memory (EEPROM) of the AMT controller and the real-time data is used by the observer for assessing the degradation/wear of the frictional clutch parts. Also, clutch slip during torque transmission is monitored, using the engine speed and the gearbox input shaft speed from Controller Area Network (CAN). Condition monitoring of clutch system provides enhanced prognostic functionality for AMT system which ensures consistent clutch performance, gear shift quality and timely warning for recalibration, repair and/or replacement of the critical wear and tear parts. Also, systematic analysis of the monitored data provides an accurate diagnosis of a developing fault. Thus, with the advanced control systems in place for AMT, a closed loop feedback based condition monitoring system is modelled for improved diagnostics and prognostics of AMT clutch system

    Integration of fault tolerance and hardware redundancy techniques into the design of mobile platforms

    This work addresses the development of a fault-tolerant mobile platform. Fault-tolerant mechanical system design is an emerging technology that attempts to build highly reliable systems by incorporating hardware and software architectures. For this purpose, previous work in fault-tolerant were reviewed. Alternate architectures were evaluated to maximize the fault tolerance capabilities of the driving and steering systems of a mobile platform. The literature review showed that most of the research work on fault tolerance has been done in the area of kinematics and control systems of robotic arms. Therefore, hardware redundancy and fault tolerance in mobile robots is an area to be researched. The prototype constructed as part of this work demonstrated basic principles and uses of a fault-tolerant mechanism, and is believed to be the first such system in its class. It is recommended that different driving and steering architectures, and the fault-tolerant controllers\u27 performance be tested on this prototype

    An Investigation into Vibration Based Techniques for Wind Turbine Blades Condition Monitoring

    The rapid expansion of wind power has been accompanied by reported reliability problems and the aim is to provide a means of increasing wind turbine reliability, prevent break downs, increase availability and reduce maintenance costs and power outages. This research work reports the development of condition monitoring (CM) for early fault detection in wind turbine blades based on vibration measurements. The research started with a background and a survey of methods used for monitoring wind turbines. Then, finite element modelling (FEM) of three bladed horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) was developed to understand the nature and mechanism of the induced vibration. A HAWT test rig was constructed and equipped with computerised vibration measuring system for model verification. Statistical and spectral processing parameters then were used to analyse vibration signals that collected in healthy and faulty cases. Results obtained using time and frequency based techniques are not suitable for extracting blades condition related information. Consequently, empirical mode decomposition method (EMD), principal component analysis method (PCA) and continuous wavelet transform (CWT) are applied for extraction blade condition related features from the measured vibration. The result showed that although these methods generally proved their success in other fields, they have failed to detect small faults or changes in blade structure. Therefore, new techniques were developed using the above mentioned methods combined with feature intensity level (FIL) and crest factor. Namely, those are EDFIL, RMPCA and wavelet based FIL. The new techniques are found to be reliable, robust and sensitive to the severity of faults. Those analysis techniques are suitable to be the detection tool for an integrated wind turbine condition monitoring system. Directions for future work are also given at the end of the thesis

    This reprint focuses on wear and fatigue analysis, the dynamic properties of coating surfaces in transmission systems, and non-destructive condition monitoring for the health management of transmission systems. Transmission systems play a vital role in various types of industrial structure, including wind turbines, vehicles, mining and material-handling equipment, offshore vessels, and aircrafts. Surface wear is an inevitable phenomenon during the service life of transmission systems (such as on gearboxes, bearings, and shafts), and wear propagation can reduce the durability of the contact coating surface. As a result, the performance of the transmission system can degrade significantly, which can cause sudden shutdown of the whole system and lead to unexpected economic loss and accidents. Therefore, to ensure adequate health management of the transmission system, it is necessary to investigate the friction, vibration, and dynamic properties of its contact coating surface and monitor its operating conditions
