Faster Algorithms for All Pairs Non-Decreasing Paths Problem
In this paper, we present an improved algorithm for the All Pairs Non-decreasing Paths (APNP) problem on weighted simple digraphs, which has running time O~(n^{{3 + omega}/{2}}) = O~(n^{2.686}). Here n is the number of vertices, and omega < 2.373 is the exponent of time complexity of fast matrix multiplication [Williams 2012, Le Gall 2014]. This matches the current best upper bound for (max, min)-matrix product [Duan, Pettie 2009] which is reducible to APNP. Thus, further improvement for APNP will imply a faster algorithm for (max, min)-matrix product. The previous best upper bound for APNP on weighted digraphs was O~(n^{1/2(3 + {3 - omega}/{omega + 1} + omega)}) = O~(n^{2.78}) [Duan, Gu, Zhang 2018]. We also show an O~(n^2) time algorithm for APNP in undirected simple graphs which also reaches optimal within logarithmic factors
Finding Simple Shortest Paths and Cycles
The problem of finding multiple simple shortest paths in a weighted directed
graph has many applications, and is considerably more difficult than
the corresponding problem when cycles are allowed in the paths. Even for a
single source-sink pair, it is known that two simple shortest paths cannot be
found in time polynomially smaller than (where ) unless the
All-Pairs Shortest Paths problem can be solved in a similar time bound. The
latter is a well-known open problem in algorithm design. We consider the
all-pairs version of the problem, and we give a new algorithm to find
simple shortest paths for all pairs of vertices. For , our algorithm runs
in time (where ), which is almost the same bound as
for the single pair case, and for we improve earlier bounds. Our approach
is based on forming suitable path extensions to find simple shortest paths;
this method is different from the `detour finding' technique used in most of
the prior work on simple shortest paths, replacement paths, and distance
sensitivity oracles.
Enumerating simple cycles is a well-studied classical problem. We present new
algorithms for generating simple cycles and simple paths in in
non-decreasing order of their weights; the algorithm for generating simple
paths is much faster, and uses another variant of path extensions. We also give
hardness results for sparse graphs, relative to the complexity of computing a
minimum weight cycle in a graph, for several variants of problems related to

Quantum and approximation algorithms for maximum witnesses of Boolean matrix products
The problem of finding maximum (or minimum) witnesses of the Boolean product
of two Boolean matrices (MW for short) has a number of important applications,
in particular the all-pairs lowest common ancestor (LCA) problem in directed
acyclic graphs (dags). The best known upper time-bound on the MW problem for
n\times n Boolean matrices of the form O(n^{2.575}) has not been substantially
improved since 2006. In order to obtain faster algorithms for this problem, we
study quantum algorithms for MW and approximation algorithms for MW (in the
standard computational model). Some of our quantum algorithms are input or
output sensitive. Our fastest quantum algorithm for the MW problem, and
consequently for the related problems, runs in time
\tilde{O}(n^{2+\lambda/2})=\tilde{O}(n^{2.434}), where \lambda satisfies the
equation \omega(1, \lambda, 1) = 1 + 1.5 \, \lambda and \omega(1, \lambda, 1)
is the exponent of the multiplication of an n \times n^{\lambda}$ matrix by an
n^{\lambda} \times n matrix. Next, we consider a relaxed version of the MW
problem (in the standard model) asking for reporting a witness of bounded rank
(the maximum witness has rank 1) for each non-zero entry of the matrix product.
First, by adapting the fastest known algorithm for maximum witnesses, we obtain
an algorithm for the relaxed problem that reports for each non-zero entry of
the product matrix a witness of rank at most \ell in time
\tilde{O}((n/\ell)n^{\omega(1,\log_n \ell,1)}). Then, by reducing the relaxed
problem to the so called k-witness problem, we provide an algorithm that
reports for each non-zero entry C[i,j] of the product matrix C a witness of
rank O(\lceil W_C(i,j)/k\rceil ), where W_C(i,j) is the number of witnesses for
C[i,j], with high probability. The algorithm runs in
\tilde{O}(n^{\omega}k^{0.4653} +n^2k) time, where \omega=\omega(1,1,1).Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure
Speeding up shortest path algorithms
Given an arbitrary, non-negatively weighted, directed graph we
present an algorithm that computes all pairs shortest paths in time
, where is the number of
different edges contained in shortest paths and is a running
time of an algorithm to solve a single-source shortest path problem (SSSP).
This is a substantial improvement over a trivial times application of
that runs in . In our algorithm we use
as a black box and hence any improvement on results also in improvement
of our algorithm.
Furthermore, a combination of our method, Johnson's reweighting technique and
topological sorting results in an all-pairs
shortest path algorithm for arbitrarily-weighted directed acyclic graphs.
In addition, we also point out a connection between the complexity of a
certain sorting problem defined on shortest paths and SSSP.Comment: 10 page
The Metric Nearness Problem
Metric nearness refers to the problem of optimally restoring metric properties to
distance measurements that happen to be nonmetric due to measurement errors or otherwise. Metric
data can be important in various settings, for example, in clustering, classification, metric-based
indexing, query processing, and graph theoretic approximation algorithms. This paper formulates
and solves the metric nearness problem: Given a set of pairwise dissimilarities, find a ānearestā set
of distances that satisfy the properties of a metricāprincipally the triangle inequality. For solving
this problem, the paper develops efficient triangle fixing algorithms that are based on an iterative
projection method. An intriguing aspect of the metric nearness problem is that a special case turns
out to be equivalent to the all pairs shortest paths problem. The paper exploits this equivalence and
develops a new algorithm for the latter problem using a primal-dual method. Applications to graph
clustering are provided as an illustration. We include experiments that demonstrate the computational
superiority of triangle fixing over general purpose convex programming software. Finally, we
conclude by suggesting various useful extensions and generalizations to metric nearness
