    QoS routing in ad-hoc networks using GA and multi-objective optimization

    Much work has been done on routing in Ad-hoc networks, but the proposed routing solutions only deal with the best effort data traffic. Connections with Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, such as voice channels with delay and bandwidth constraints, are not supported. The QoS routing has been receiving increasingly intensive attention, but searching for the shortest path with many metrics is an NP-complete problem. For this reason, approximated solutions and heuristic algorithms should be developed for multi-path constraints QoS routing. Also, the routing methods should be adaptive, flexible, and intelligent. In this paper, we use Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and multi-objective optimization for QoS routing in Ad-hoc Networks. In order to reduce the search space of GA, we implemented a search space reduction algorithm, which reduces the search space for GAMAN (GA-based routing algorithm for Mobile Ad-hoc Networks) to find a new route. We evaluate the performance of GAMAN by computer simulations and show that GAMAN has better behaviour than GLBR (Genetic Load Balancing Routing).Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Predictive and distributed routing balancing (PR-DRB) : high speed interconnection networks

    Current parallel applications running on clusters require the use of an interconnection network to perform communications among all computing nodes available. Imbalance of communications can produce network congestion, reducing throughput and increasing latency, degrading the overall system performance. On the other hand, parallel applications running on these networks posses representative stages which allow their characterization, as well as repetitive behavior that can be identified on the basis of this characterization. This work presents the Predictive and Distributed Routing Balancing (PR-DRB), a new method developed to gradually control network congestion, based on paths expansion, traffic distribution and effective traffic load, in order to maintain low latency values. PR-DRB monitors messages latencies on intermediate routers, makes decisions about alternative paths and record communication pattern information encountered during congestion situation. Based on the concept of applications repetitiveness, best solution recorded are reapplied when saved communication pattern re-appears. Traffic congestion experiments were conducted in order to evaluate the performance of the method, and improvements were observed.Les aplicacions paral·leles actuals en els Clústers requereixen l'ús d'una xarxa d'interconnexió per comunicar a tots els nodes de còmput disponibles. El desequilibri en la càrrega de comunicacions pot congestionar la xarxa, incrementant la latència i disminuint el throughput, degradant el rendiment total del sistema. D'altra banda, les aplicacions paral·leles que s'executen sobre aquestes xarxes contenen etapes representatives durant la seva execució les quals permeten caracteritzar-les, a més d'extraure un comportament repetitiu que pot ser identificat en base a aquesta caracterització. Aquest treball presenta el Balanceig Predictiu de Encaminament Distribuït (PR-DRB), un nou mètode desenvolupat per controlar la congestió a la xarxa en forma gradual, basat en l'expansió de camins, la distribució de trànsit i càrrega efectiva actual per tal de mantenir una latència baixa. PR-DRB monitoritza la latència dels missatges en els encaminadors, pren decisions sobre els camins alternatius a utilitzar i registra la informació de la congestió sobre la base del patró de comunicacions detectat, utilitzant com a concepte base la repetitivitat de les aplicacions per després tornar a aplicar la millor solució quan aquest patró es repeteixi. Experiments de trànsit amb congestió van ser portats a terme per avaluar el rendiment del mètode, els quals van mostrar la bondat del mateix.Las aplicaciones paralelas actuales en los Clústeres requieren el uso de una red de interconexión para comunicar a todos los nodos de cómputo disponibles. El desbalance en la carga de comunicaciones puede congestionar la red, incrementando la latencia y disminuyendo el throughput, degradando el rendimiento total del sistema. Por otro lado, las aplicaciones paralelas que corren sobre estas redes contienen etapas representativas durante su ejecución las cuales permiten caracterizarlas, además de un comportamiento repetitivo que puede ser identificado en base a dicha caracterización. Este trabajo presenta el Balanceo Predictivo de Encaminamiento Distribuido (PR-DRB), un nuevo método desarrollado para controlar la congestión en la red en forma gradual; basado en la expansión de caminos, la distribución de tráfico y carga efectiva actual, a fin de mantener una latencia baja. PR-DRB monitorea la latencia de los mensajes en los encaminadores, toma decisiones sobre los caminos alternativos a utilizar y registra la información de la congestión en base al patrón de comunicaciones detectado, usando como concepto base la repetitividad de las aplicaciones para luego volver a aplicar la mejor solución cuando dicho patrón se repita.     A multipath routing method for tolerating permanent and non-permanent faults

    The intensive and continuous use of high-performance computers for executing computationally intensive applications, coupled with the large number of elements that make them up, dramatically increase the likelihood of failures during their operation. The interconnection network is a critical part of such systems, therefore, network faults have an extremely high impact because most routing algorithms are not designed to tolerate faults. In such algorithms, just a single fault may stall messages in the network, preventing the finalization of applications, or may lead to deadlocked confi gurations. This work focuses on the problem of fault tolerance for high-speed interconnection networks by designing a fault-tolerant routing method to solve an unbounded number of dynamic faults (permanent and non- permanent). To accomplish this task we take advantage of the communication path redundancy, by means of a multipath routing approach.     Non-minimal adaptive routing for efficient interconnection networks

    RESUMEN: La red de interconexión es un concepto clave de los sistemas de computación paralelos. El primer aspecto que define una red de interconexión es su topología. Habitualmente, las redes escalables y eficientes en términos de coste y consumo energético tienen bajo diámetro y se basan en topologías que encaran el límite de Moore y en las que no hay diversidad de caminos mínimos. Una vez definida la topología, quedando implícitamente definidos los límites de rendimiento de la red, es necesario diseñar un algoritmo de enrutamiento que se acerque lo máximo posible a esos límites y debido a la ausencia de caminos mínimos, este además debe explotar los caminos no mínimos cuando el tráfico es adverso. Estos algoritmos de enrutamiento habitualmente seleccionan entre rutas mínimas y no mínimas en base a las condiciones de la red. Las rutas no mínimas habitualmente se basan en el algoritmo de balanceo de carga propuesto por Valiant, esto implica que doblan la longitud de las rutas mínimas y por lo tanto, la latencia soportada por los paquetes se incrementa. En cuanto a la tecnología, desde su introducción en entornos HPC a principios de los años 2000, Ethernet ha sido usado en un porcentaje representativo de los sistemas. Esta tesis introduce una implementación realista y competitiva de una red escalable y sin pérdidas basada en dispositivos de red Ethernet commodity, considerando topologías de bajo diámetro y bajo consumo energético y logrando un ahorro energético de hasta un 54%. Además, propone un enrutamiento sobre la citada arquitectura, en adelante QCN-Switch, el cual selecciona entre rutas mínimas y no mínimas basado en notificaciones de congestión explícitas. Una vez implementada la decisión de enrutar siguiendo rutas no mínimas, se introduce un enrutamiento adaptativo en fuente capaz de adaptar el número de saltos en las rutas no mínimas. Este enrutamiento, en adelante ACOR, es agnóstico de la topología y mejora la latencia en hasta un 28%. Finalmente, se introduce un enrutamiento dependiente de la topología, en adelante LIAN, que optimiza el número de saltos de las rutas no mínimas basado en las condiciones de la red. Los resultados de su evaluación muestran que obtiene una latencia cuasi óptima y mejora el rendimiento de algoritmos de enrutamiento actuales reduciendo la latencia en hasta un 30% y obteniendo un rendimiento estable y equitativo.ABSTRACT: Interconnection network is a key concept of any parallel computing system. The first aspect to define an interconnection network is its topology. Typically, power and cost-efficient scalable networks with low diameter rely on topologies that approach the Moore bound in which there is no minimal path diversity. Once the topology is defined, the performance bounds of the network are determined consequently, so a suitable routing algorithm should be designed to accomplish as much as possible of those limits and, due to the lack of minimal path diversity, it must exploit non-minimal paths when the traffic pattern is adversarial. These routing algorithms usually select between minimal and non-minimal paths based on the network conditions, where the non-minimal paths are built according to Valiant load-balancing algorithm. This implies that these paths double the length of minimal ones and then the latency supported by packets increases. Regarding the technology, from its introduction in HPC systems in the early 2000s, Ethernet has been used in a significant fraction of the systems. This dissertation introduces a realistic and competitive implementation of a scalable lossless Ethernet network for HPC environments considering low-diameter and low-power topologies. This allows for up to 54% power savings. Furthermore, it proposes a routing upon the cited architecture, hereon QCN-Switch, which selects between minimal and non-minimal paths per packet based on explicit congestion notifications instead of credits. Once the miss-routing decision is implemented, it introduces two mechanisms regarding the selection of the intermediate switch to develop a source adaptive routing algorithm capable of adapting the number of hops in the non-minimal paths. This routing, hereon ACOR, is topology-agnostic and improves average latency in all cases up to 28%. Finally, a topology-dependent routing, hereon LIAN, is introduced to optimize the number of hops in the non-minimal paths based on the network live conditions.     Datacenter Traffic Control: Understanding Techniques and Trade-offs

    Datacenters provide cost-effective and flexible access to scalable compute and storage resources necessary for today's cloud computing needs. A typical datacenter is made up of thousands of servers connected with a large network and usually managed by one operator. To provide quality access to the variety of applications and services hosted on datacenters and maximize performance, it deems necessary to use datacenter networks effectively and efficiently. Datacenter traffic is often a mix of several classes with different priorities and requirements. This includes user-generated interactive traffic, traffic with deadlines, and long-running traffic. To this end, custom transport protocols and traffic management techniques have been developed to improve datacenter network performance. In this tutorial paper, we review the general architecture of datacenter networks, various topologies proposed for them, their traffic properties, general traffic control challenges in datacenters and general traffic control objectives. The purpose of this paper is to bring out the important characteristics of traffic control in datacenters and not to survey all existing solutions (as it is virtually impossible due to massive body of existing research). We hope to provide readers with a wide range of options and factors while considering a variety of traffic control mechanisms. We discuss various characteristics of datacenter traffic control including management schemes, transmission control, traffic shaping, prioritization, load balancing, multipathing, and traffic scheduling. Next, we point to several open challenges as well as new and interesting networking paradigms. At the end of this paper, we briefly review inter-datacenter networks that connect geographically dispersed datacenters which have been receiving increasing attention recently and pose interesting and novel research problems.Comment: Accepted for Publication in IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorial

    Energy Saving and Virtualization Technologies in Switching

    Switching is the key functionality for many devices like electronic Router and Switch, optical Router, Network on Chips (NoCs) and so on. Basically, switching is responsible for moving data unit from one port/location to another (or multiple) port(s)/location(s). In past years, the high capacity, low delay were the main concerns when designing high-end switching unit. As new demands, requests and technologies emerge, flexibility and low power cost switching design become to weight the same as throughput and delay. On one hand, highly flexible (i.e, programming ability) switching can cope with variable needs stem from new applications (i.e, VoIP) and popular user behavior (i.e, p2p downloading); on the other hand, reduce the energy and power dissipation for switching could not only save bills and build echo system but also expand components life time. Many research efforts have been devoted to increase switching flexibility and reduce its power cost. In this thesis work, we consider to exploit virtualization as the main technique to build flexible software router in the first part, then in the second part we draw our attention on energy saving in NoC (i.e, a switching fabric designed to handle the on chip data transmission) and software router. In the first part of the thesis, we consider the virtualization inside Software Routers (SRs). SR, i.e, routers running in commodity Personal Computers (PCs), become an appealing solution compared to traditional Proprietary Routing Devices (PRD) for various reasons such as cost (the multi-vendor hardware used by SRs can be cheap, while the equipment needed by PRDs is more expensive and their training cost is higher), openness (SRs can make use of a large number of open source networking applications, while PRDs are more closed) and flexibility. The forwarding performance provided by SRs has been an obstacle to their deployment in real networks. For this reason, we proposed to aggregate multiple routing units that form an powerful SR known as the Multistage Software Router (MSR) to overcome the performance limitation for a single SR. Our results show that the throughput can increase almost linearly as the number of the internal routing devices. But some other features related to flexibility (such as power saving, programmability, router migration or easy management) have been investigated less than performance previously. We noticed that virtualization techniques become reality thanks to the quick development of the PC architectures, which are now able to easily support several logical PCs running in parallel on the same hardware. Virtualization could provide many flexible features like hardware and software decoupling, encapsulation of virtual machine state, failure recovery and security, to name a few. Virtualization permits to build multiple SRs inside one physical host and a multistage architecture exploiting only logical devices. By doing so, physical resources can be used in a more efficient way, energy savings features (switching on and off device when needed) can be introduced and logical resources could be rented on-demand instead of being owned. Since virtualization techniques are still difficult to deploy, several challenges need to be faced when trying to integrate them into routers. The main aim of the first part in this thesis is to find out the feasibility of the virtualization approach, to build and test virtualized SR (VSR), to implement the MSR exploiting logical, i.e. virtualized, resources, to analyze virtualized routing performance and to propose improvement techniques to VSR and virtual MSR (VMSR). More specifically, we considered different virtualization solutions like VMware, XEN, KVM to build VSR and VMSR, being VMware a closed source solution but with higher performance and XEN/KVM open source solutions. Firstly we built and tested each single component of our multistage architecture (i.e, back-end router, load balancer )inside the virtual infrastructure, then and we extended the performance experiments with more complex scenarios like multiple Back-end Router (BR) or Load Balancer (LB) which cooperate to route packets. Our results show that virtualization could introduce 40~\% performance penalty compare with the hardware only solution. Keep the performance limitation in mind, we developed the whole VMSR and we obtained low throughput with 64B packet flow as expected. To increase the VMSR throughput, two directions could be considered, the first one is to improve the single component ( i.e, VSR) performance and the other is to work from the topology (i.e, best allocation of the VMs into the hardware ) point of view. For the first method, we considered to tune the VSR inside the KVM and we studied closely such as Linux driver, scheduler, interconnect methodology which could impact the performance significantly with proper configuration; then we proposed two ways for the VMs allocation into physical servers to enhance the VMSR performance. Our results show that with good tuning and allocation of VMs, we could minimize the virtualization penalty and get reasonable throughput for running SRs inside virtual infrastructure and add flexibility functionalities into SRs easily. In the second part of the thesis, we consider the energy efficient switching design problem and we focus on two main architecture, the NoC and MSR. As many research works suggest, the energy cost in the Communication Technologies ( ICT ) is constantly increasing. Among the main ICT sectors, a large portion of the energy consumption is contributed by the telecommunication infrastructure and their devices, i.e, router, switch, cell phone, ip TV settle box, storage home gateway etc. More in detail, the linecards, links, System on Chip (SoC) including the transmitter/receiver on these variate devices are the main power consuming units. We firstly present the work on the power reduction of the data transmission in SoC, which is carried out by the NoC. NoC is an approach to design the communication subsystem between different Processing Units (PEs) in a SoC. PEs could be different elements such as CPU, memory, digital signal/analog signal processor etc. Different PEs performs specific tasks depending on the applications running on the chip. Different tasks need to exchange data information among each other, thus flits ( chopped packet with limited header information ) are generated by PEs. The flits are injected into the NoC by the proper interface and routed until reach the destination PEs. For the whole procedure, the NoC behaves as a packet switch network. Studies show that in general the information processing in the PEs only consume 60~\% energy while the remaining 40~\% are consumed by the NoC. More importantly, as the current network designing principle, the NoC capacity is devised to handle the peak load. This is a clear sign for energy saving when the network load is low. In our work, we considered to exploit Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) technique, which can jointly decrease or increase the system voltage and frequency when necessary, i.e, decrease the voltage and frequency at low load scenario to save energy and reduce power dissipation. More precisely, we studied two different NoC architectures for energy saving, namely single plane chip and multi-plane chip architecture. In both cases we have a very strict constraint to be that all the links and transmitter/receivers on the same plane work at the same frequency/voltage to avoid synchronization problem. This is the main difference with many existing works in the literature which usually assume different links can work at different frequency, that is hard to be implemented in reality. For the single plane NoC, we exploited different routing schemas combined with DVFS to reduce the power for the whole chip. Our results haven been compared with the optimal value obtained by modeling the power saving formally as a quadratic programming problem. Results suggest that just by using simple load balancing routing algorithm, we can save considerable energy for the single chip NoC architecture. Furthermore, we noticed that in the single plane NoC architecture, the bottleneck link could limit the DVFS effectiveness. Then we discovered that multiplane NoC architecture is fairly easy to be implemented and it could help with the energy saving. Thus we focus on the multiplane architecture and we found out that DVFS could be more efficient when we concentrate more traffic into one plane and send the remaining flows to other planes. We compared load concentration and load balancing with different power modeling and all simulation results show that load concentration is better compared with load balancing for multiplan NoC architecture. Finally, we also present one of the the energy efficient MSR design technique, which permits the MSR to follow the day-night traffic pattern more efficiently with our on-line energy saving algorithm

    Issues in designing transport layer multicast facilities

    Multicasting denotes a facility in a communications system for providing efficient delivery from a message's source to some well-defined set of locations using a single logical address. While modem network hardware supports multidestination delivery, first generation Transport Layer protocols (e.g., the DoD Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) (15) and ISO TP-4 (41)) did not anticipate the changes over the past decade in underlying network hardware, transmission speeds, and communication patterns that have enabled and driven the interest in reliable multicast. Much recent research has focused on integrating the underlying hardware multicast capability with the reliable services of Transport Layer protocols. Here, we explore the communication issues surrounding the design of such a reliable multicast mechanism. Approaches and solutions from the literature are discussed, and four experimental Transport Layer protocols that incorporate reliable multicast are examined

    Data center resilience assessment : storage, networking and security.

    Data centers (DC) are the core of the national cyber infrastructure. With the incredible growth of critical data volumes in financial institutions, government organizations, and global companies, data centers are becoming larger and more distributed posing more challenges for operational continuity in the presence of experienced cyber attackers and occasional natural disasters. The main objective of this research work is to present a new methodology for data center resilience assessment, this methodology consists of: • Define Data center resilience requirements. • Devise a high level metric for data center resilience. • Design and develop a tool to validate and the metric. Since computer networks are an important component in the data center architecture, this research work was extended to investigate computer network resilience enhancement opportunities within the area of routing protocols, redundancy, and server load to minimize the network down time and increase the time period of resisting attacks. Data center resilience assessment is a complex process as it involves several aspects such as: policies for emergencies, recovery plans, variation in data center operational roles, hosted/processed data types and data center architectures. However, in this dissertation, storage, networking and security are emphasized. The need for resilience assessment emerged due to the gap in existing reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS) measures. Resilience as an evaluation metric leads to better proactive perspective in system design and management. The proposed Data center resilience assessment portal (DC-RAP) is designed to easily integrate various operational scenarios. DC-RAP features a user friendly interface to assess the resilience in terms of performance analysis and speed recovery by collecting the following information: time to detect attacks, time to resist, time to fail and recovery time. Several set of experiments were performed, results obtained from investigating the impact of routing protocols, server load balancing algorithms on network resilience, showed that using particular routing protocol or server load balancing algorithm can enhance network resilience level in terms of minimizing the downtime and ensure speed recovery. Also experimental results for investigating the use social network analysis (SNA) for identifying important router in computer network showed that the SNA was successful in identifying important routers. This important router list can be used to redundant those routers to ensure high level of resilience. Finally, experimental results for testing and validating the data center resilience assessment methodology using the DC-RAP showed the ability of the methodology quantify data center resilience in terms of providing steady performance, minimal recovery time and maximum resistance-attacks time. The main contributions of this work can be summarized as follows: • A methodology for evaluation data center resilience has been developed. • Implemented a Data Center Resilience Assessment Portal (D$-RAP) for resilience evaluations. • Investigated the usage of Social Network Analysis to Improve the computer network resilience
