Mapping and Deep Analysis of Image Dehazing: Coherent Taxonomy, Datasets, Open Challenges, Motivations, and Recommendations
Our study aims to review and analyze the most relevant studies in the image dehazing field. Many aspects have been deemed necessary to provide a broad understanding of various studies that have been examined through surveying the existing literature. These aspects are as follows: datasets that have been used in the literature, challenges that other researchers have faced, motivations, and recommendations for diminishing the obstacles in the reported literature. A systematic protocol is employed to search all relevant articles on image dehazing, with variations in keywords, in addition to searching for evaluation and benchmark studies. The search process is established on three online databases, namely, IEEE Xplore, Web of Science (WOS), and ScienceDirect (SD), from 2008 to 2021. These indices are selected because they are sufficient in terms of coverage. Along with definition of the inclusion and exclusion criteria, we include 152 articles to the final set. A total of 55 out of 152 articles focused on various studies that conducted image dehazing, and 13 out 152 studies covered most of the review papers based on scenarios and general overviews. Finally, most of the included articles centered on the development of image dehazing algorithms based on real-time scenario (84/152) articles. Image dehazing removes unwanted visual effects and is often considered an image enhancement technique, which requires a fully automated algorithm to work under real-time outdoor applications, a reliable evaluation method, and datasets based on different weather conditions. Many relevant studies have been conducted to meet these critical requirements. We conducted objective image quality assessment experimental comparison of various image dehazing algorithms. In conclusions unlike other review papers, our study distinctly reflects different observations on image dehazing areas. We believe that the result of this study can serve as a useful guideline for practitioners who are looking for a comprehensive view on image dehazing
Vision of a Visipedia
The web is not perfect: while text is easily
searched and organized, pictures (the vast majority of the bits
that one can find online) are not. In order to see how one could
improve the web and make pictures first-class citizens of the
web, I explore the idea of Visipedia, a visual interface for
Wikipedia that is able to answer visual queries and enables
experts to contribute and organize visual knowledge. Five
distinct groups of humans would interact through Visipedia:
users, experts, editors, visual workers, and machine vision
scientists. The latter would gradually build automata able to
interpret images. I explore some of the technical challenges
involved in making Visipedia happen. I argue that Visipedia will
likely grow organically, combining state-of-the-art machine
vision with human labor
Detail Preserving Low Illumination Image and Video Enhancement Algorithm Based on Dark Channel Prior
In low illumination situations, insufficient light in the monitoring device results in poor visibility of effective information, which cannot meet practical applications. To overcome the above problems, a detail preserving low illumination video image enhancement algorithm based on dark channel prior is proposed in this paper. First, a dark channel refinement method is proposed, which is defined by imposing a structure prior to the initial dark channel to improve the image brightness. Second, an anisotropic guided filter (AnisGF) is used to refine the transmission, which preserves the edges of the image. Finally, a detail enhancement algorithm is proposed to avoid the problem of insufficient detail in the initial enhancement image. To avoid video flicker, the next video frames are enhanced based on the brightness of the first enhanced frame. Qualitative and quantitative analysis shows that the proposed algorithm is superior to the contrast algorithm, in which the proposed algorithm ranks first in average gradient, edge intensity, contrast, and patch-based contrast quality index. It can be effectively applied to the enhancement of surveillance video images and for wider computer vision applications
Deep Learning-Based Object Detection in Maritime Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Imagery: Review and Experimental Comparisons
With the advancement of maritime unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and deep
learning technologies, the application of UAV-based object detection has become
increasingly significant in the fields of maritime industry and ocean
engineering. Endowed with intelligent sensing capabilities, the maritime UAVs
enable effective and efficient maritime surveillance. To further promote the
development of maritime UAV-based object detection, this paper provides a
comprehensive review of challenges, relative methods, and UAV aerial datasets.
Specifically, in this work, we first briefly summarize four challenges for
object detection on maritime UAVs, i.e., object feature diversity, device
limitation, maritime environment variability, and dataset scarcity. We then
focus on computational methods to improve maritime UAV-based object detection
performance in terms of scale-aware, small object detection, view-aware,
rotated object detection, lightweight methods, and others. Next, we review the
UAV aerial image/video datasets and propose a maritime UAV aerial dataset named
MS2ship for ship detection. Furthermore, we conduct a series of experiments to
present the performance evaluation and robustness analysis of object detection
methods on maritime datasets. Eventually, we give the discussion and outlook on
future works for maritime UAV-based object detection. The MS2ship dataset is

Eye-tracking assistive technologies for individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS, is a progressive nervous system disorder that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, resulting in the loss of muscle control. For individuals with ALS, where mobility is limited to the movement of the eyes, the use of eye-tracking-based applications can be applied to achieve some basic tasks with certain digital interfaces. This paper presents a review of existing eye-tracking software and hardware through which eye-tracking their application is sketched as an assistive technology to cope with ALS. Eye-tracking also provides a suitable alternative as control of game elements. Furthermore, artificial intelligence has been utilized to improve eye-tracking technology with significant improvement in calibration and accuracy. Gaps in literature are highlighted in the study to offer a direction for future research
Visibility in underwater robotics: Benchmarking and single image dehazing
Dealing with underwater visibility is one of the most important challenges in autonomous underwater robotics. The light transmission in the water medium degrades images making the interpretation of the scene difficult and consequently compromising the whole intervention. This thesis contributes by analysing the impact of the underwater image degradation in commonly used vision algorithms through benchmarking. An online framework for underwater research that makes possible to analyse results under different conditions is presented. Finally, motivated by the results of experimentation with the developed framework, a deep learning solution is proposed capable of dehazing a degraded image in real time restoring the original colors of the image.
