    Distance-Sensitive Planar Point Location

    Let S\mathcal{S} be a connected planar polygonal subdivision with nn edges that we want to preprocess for point-location queries, and where we are given the probability γi\gamma_i that the query point lies in a polygon PiP_i of S\mathcal{S}. We show how to preprocess S\mathcal{S} such that the query time for a point~pPip\in P_i depends on~γi\gamma_i and, in addition, on the distance from pp to the boundary of~PiP_i---the further away from the boundary, the faster the query. More precisely, we show that a point-location query can be answered in time O(min(logn,1+logarea(Pi)γiΔp2))O\left(\min \left(\log n, 1 + \log \frac{\mathrm{area}(P_i)}{\gamma_i \Delta_{p}^2}\right)\right), where Δp\Delta_{p} is the shortest Euclidean distance of the query point~pp to the boundary of PiP_i. Our structure uses O(n)O(n) space and O(nlogn)O(n \log n) preprocessing time. It is based on a decomposition of the regions of S\mathcal{S} into convex quadrilaterals and triangles with the following property: for any point pPip\in P_i, the quadrilateral or triangle containing~pp has area Ω(Δp2)\Omega(\Delta_{p}^2). For the special case where S\mathcal{S} is a subdivision of the unit square and γi=area(Pi)\gamma_i=\mathrm{area}(P_i), we present a simpler solution that achieves a query time of O(min(logn,log1Δp2))O\left(\min \left(\log n, \log \frac{1}{\Delta_{p}^2}\right)\right). The latter solution can be extended to convex subdivisions in three dimensions

    Color postprocessing for 3-dimensional finite element mesh quality evaluation and evolving graphical workstation

    Three general tasks on general-purpose, interactive color graphics postprocessing for three-dimensional computational mechanics were accomplished. First, the existing program (POSTPRO3D) is ported to a high-resolution device. In the course of this transfer, numerous enhancements are implemented in the program. The performance of the hardware was evaluated from the point of view of engineering postprocessing, and the characteristics of future hardware were discussed. Second, interactive graphical tools implemented to facilitate qualitative mesh evaluation from a single analysis. The literature was surveyed and a bibliography compiled. Qualitative mesh sensors were examined, and the use of two-dimensional plots of unaveraged responses on the surface of three-dimensional continua was emphasized in an interactive color raster graphics environment. Finally, a postprocessing environment was designed for state-of-the-art workstation technology. Modularity, personalization of the environment, integration of the engineering design processes, and the development and use of high-level graphics tools are some of the features of the intended environment

    An Octree-based proxy for collision detection in large-scale particle systems

    International audienceParticle systems are important building block for simulating vivid and detail-rich effects in virtual world. One of the most difficult aspects of particle systems has been detecting collisions between particlesand mesh surface. Due to the huge computation, a variety of proxy-based approaches have been proposed recently to perform visually correct simulation. However, all either limit the complexity of the scene, fail toguarantee non-penetration, or are too slow for real-time use with many particles. In this paper, we propose anew octree-based proxy for colliding particles with meshes on the GPU. Our approach works by subdividingthe scene mesh with an octree in which each leaf node associates with a representative normal correspondingto the normals of the triangles that intersect the node. We present a view-visible method, which is suitable forboth closed and non-closed models, to label the empty leaf nodes adjacent to nonempty ones with appropriateback/front property, allowing particles to collide with both sides of the scene mesh. We show how collisionscan be performed robustly on this proxy structure in place of the original mesh, and describe an extension thatallows for fast traversal of the octree structure on the GPU. The experiments show that the proposed methodis fast enough for real-time performance with millions of particles interacting with complex scenes

    The Topology ToolKit

    This system paper presents the Topology ToolKit (TTK), a software platform designed for topological data analysis in scientific visualization. TTK provides a unified, generic, efficient, and robust implementation of key algorithms for the topological analysis of scalar data, including: critical points, integral lines, persistence diagrams, persistence curves, merge trees, contour trees, Morse-Smale complexes, fiber surfaces, continuous scatterplots, Jacobi sets, Reeb spaces, and more. TTK is easily accessible to end users due to a tight integration with ParaView. It is also easily accessible to developers through a variety of bindings (Python, VTK/C++) for fast prototyping or through direct, dependence-free, C++, to ease integration into pre-existing complex systems. While developing TTK, we faced several algorithmic and software engineering challenges, which we document in this paper. In particular, we present an algorithm for the construction of a discrete gradient that complies to the critical points extracted in the piecewise-linear setting. This algorithm guarantees a combinatorial consistency across the topological abstractions supported by TTK, and importantly, a unified implementation of topological data simplification for multi-scale exploration and analysis. We also present a cached triangulation data structure, that supports time efficient and generic traversals, which self-adjusts its memory usage on demand for input simplicial meshes and which implicitly emulates a triangulation for regular grids with no memory overhead. Finally, we describe an original software architecture, which guarantees memory efficient and direct accesses to TTK features, while still allowing for researchers powerful and easy bindings and extensions. TTK is open source (BSD license) and its code, online documentation and video tutorials are available on TTK's website

    Wavelet representation of contour sets

    Journal ArticleWe present a new wavelet compression and multiresolution modeling approach for sets of contours (level sets). In contrast to previous wavelet schemes, our algorithm creates a parametrization of a scalar field induced by its contours and compactly stores this parametrization rather than function values sampled on a regular grid. Our representation is based on hierarchical polygon meshes with subdivision connectivity whose vertices are transformed into wavelet coefficients. From this sparse set of coefficients, every set of contours can be efficiently reconstructed at multiple levels of resolution. When applying lossy compression, introducing high quantization errors, our method preserves contour topology, in contrast to compression methods applied to the corresponding field function. We provide numerical results for scalar fields defined on planar domains. Our approach generalizes to volumetric domains, time-varying contours, and level sets of vector fields

    Automatic construction of boundary parametrizations for geometric multigrid solvers

    We present an algorithm that constructs parametrizations of boundary and interface surfaces automatically. Starting with high-resolution triangulated surfaces describing the computational domains, we iteratively simplify the surfaces yielding a coarse approximation of the boundaries with the same topological type. While simplifying we construct a function that is defined on the coarse surface and whose image is the original surface. This function allows access to the correct shape and surface normals of the original surface as well as to any kind of data defined on it. Such information can be used by geometric multigrid solvers doing adaptive mesh refinement. Our algorithm runs stable on all types of input surfaces, including those that describe domains consisting of several materials. We have used our method with success in different fields and we discuss examples from structural mechanics and biomechanics

    Quantification of 3D spatial correlations between state variables and distances to the grain boundary network in full-field crystal plasticity spectral method simulations

    Deformation microstructure heterogeneities play a pivotal role during dislocation patterning and interface network restructuring. Thus, they affect indirectly how an alloy recrystallizes if at all. Given this relevance, it has become common practice to study the evolution of deformation microstructure heterogeneities with 3D experiments and full-field crystal plasticity computer simulations including tools such as the spectral method. Quantifying material point to grain or phase boundary distances, though, is a practical challenge with spectral method crystal plasticity models because these discretize the material volume rather than mesh explicitly the grain and phase boundary interface network. This limitation calls for the development of interface reconstruction algorithms which enable us to develop specific data post-processing protocols to quantify spatial correlations between state variable values at each material point and the points' corresponding distance to the closest grain or phase boundary. This work contributes to advance such post-processing routines. Specifically, two grain reconstruction and three distancing methods are developed to solve above challenge. The individual strengths and limitations of these methods surplus the efficiency of their parallel implementation is assessed with an exemplary DAMASK large scale crystal plasticity study.
