Fast algorithms and efficient GPU implementations for the Radon transform and the back-projection operator represented as convolution operators
The Radon transform and its adjoint, the back-projection operator, can both
be expressed as convolutions in log-polar coordinates. Hence, fast algorithms
for the application of the operators can be constructed by using FFT, if data
is resampled at log-polar coordinates. Radon data is typically measured on an
equally spaced grid in polar coordinates, and reconstructions are represented
(as images) in Cartesian coordinates. Therefore, in addition to FFT, several
steps of interpolation have to be conducted in order to apply the Radon
transform and the back-projection operator by means of convolutions.
Both the interpolation and the FFT operations can be efficiently implemented
on Graphical Processor Units (GPUs). For the interpolation, it is possible to
make use of the fact that linear interpolation is hard-wired on GPUs, meaning
that it has the same computational cost as direct memory access. Cubic order
interpolation schemes can be constructed by combining linear interpolation
steps which provides important computation speedup.
We provide details about how the Radon transform and the back-projection can
be implemented efficiently as convolution operators on GPUs. For large data
sizes, speedups of about 10 times are obtained in relation to the computational
times of other software packages based on GPU implementations of the Radon
transform and the back-projection operator. Moreover, speedups of more than a
1000 times are obtained against the CPU-implementations provided in the MATLAB
image processing toolbox
Nonlinear Attitude Filtering: A Comparison Study
This paper contains a concise comparison of a number of nonlinear attitude
filtering methods that have attracted attention in the robotics and aviation
literature. With the help of previously published surveys and comparison
studies, the vast literature on the subject is narrowed down to a small pool of
competitive attitude filters. Amongst these filters is a second-order optimal
minimum-energy filter recently proposed by the authors. Easily comparable
discretized unit quaternion implementations of the selected filters are
provided. We conduct a simulation study and compare the transient behaviour and
asymptotic convergence of these filters in two scenarios with different
initialization and measurement errors inspired by applications in unmanned
aerial robotics and space flight. The second-order optimal minimum-energy
filter is shown to have the best performance of all filters, including the
industry standard multiplicative extended Kalman filter (MEKF)
Graph- and finite element-based total variation models for the inverse problem in diffuse optical tomography
Total variation (TV) is a powerful regularization method that has been widely
applied in different imaging applications, but is difficult to apply to diffuse
optical tomography (DOT) image reconstruction (inverse problem) due to complex
and unstructured geometries, non-linearity of the data fitting and
regularization terms, and non-differentiability of the regularization term. We
develop several approaches to overcome these difficulties by: i) defining
discrete differential operators for unstructured geometries using both finite
element and graph representations; ii) developing an optimization algorithm
based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) for the
non-differentiable and non-linear minimization problem; iii) investigating
isotropic and anisotropic variants of TV regularization, and comparing their
finite element- and graph-based implementations. These approaches are evaluated
on experiments on simulated data and real data acquired from a tissue phantom.
Our results show that both FEM and graph-based TV regularization is able to
accurately reconstruct both sparse and non-sparse distributions without the
over-smoothing effect of Tikhonov regularization and the over-sparsifying
effect of L regularization. The graph representation was found to
out-perform the FEM method for low-resolution meshes, and the FEM method was

Fast hyperbolic Radon transform represented as convolutions in log-polar coordinates
The hyperbolic Radon transform is a commonly used tool in seismic processing,
for instance in seismic velocity analysis, data interpolation and for multiple
removal. A direct implementation by summation of traces with different moveouts
is computationally expensive for large data sets. In this paper we present a
new method for fast computation of the hyperbolic Radon transforms. It is based
on using a log-polar sampling with which the main computational parts reduce to
computing convolutions. This allows for fast implementations by means of FFT.
In addition to the FFT operations, interpolation procedures are required for
switching between coordinates in the time-offset; Radon; and log-polar domains.
Graphical Processor Units (GPUs) are suitable to use as a computational
platform for this purpose, due to the hardware supported interpolation routines
as well as optimized routines for FFT. Performance tests show large speed-ups
of the proposed algorithm. Hence, it is suitable to use in iterative methods,
and we provide examples for data interpolation and multiple removal using this

Multi-patch discontinuous Galerkin isogeometric analysis for wave propagation: explicit time-stepping and efficient mass matrix inversion
We present a class of spline finite element methods for time-domain wave
propagation which are particularly amenable to explicit time-stepping. The
proposed methods utilize a discontinuous Galerkin discretization to enforce
continuity of the solution field across geometric patches in a multi-patch
setting, which yields a mass matrix with convenient block diagonal structure.
Over each patch, we show how to accurately and efficiently invert mass matrices
in the presence of curved geometries by using a weight-adjusted approximation
of the mass matrix inverse. This approximation restores a tensor product
structure while retaining provable high order accuracy and semi-discrete energy
stability. We also estimate the maximum stable timestep for spline-based finite
elements and show that the use of spline spaces result in less stringent CFL
restrictions than equivalent piecewise continuous or discontinuous finite
element spaces. Finally, we explore the use of optimal knot vectors based on L2
n-widths. We show how the use of optimal knot vectors can improve both
approximation properties and the maximum stable timestep, and present a simple
heuristic method for approximating optimal knot positions. Numerical
experiments confirm the accuracy and stability of the proposed methods
Connecting the Dots: Towards Continuous Time Hamiltonian Monte Carlo
Continuous time Hamiltonian Monte Carlo is introduced, as a powerful
alternative to Markov chain Monte Carlo methods for continuous target
distributions. The method is constructed in two steps: First Hamiltonian
dynamics are chosen as the deterministic dynamics in a continuous time
piecewise deterministic Markov process. Under very mild restrictions, such a
process will have the desired target distribution as an invariant distribution.
Secondly, the numerical implementation of such processes, based on adaptive
numerical integration of second order ordinary differential equations is
considered. The numerical implementation yields an approximate, yet highly
robust algorithm that, unlike conventional Hamiltonian Monte Carlo, enables the
exploitation of the complete Hamiltonian trajectories (hence the title). The
proposed algorithm may yield large speedups and improvements in stability
relative to relevant benchmarks, while incurring numerical errors that are
negligible relative to the overall Monte Carlo errors
