Marine power distribution system fault location using a portable injection unit

    Get PDF
A portable injection unit for Active Impedance Estimation (AIE) is built and tested in a DC zonal marine power distribution system to provide useful information for system protection and restoration. The portable unit generates current “spikes” and injects them into the system once short circuit faults are detected (by measuring the system voltage drop). The faulted system impedance can be estimated by AIE and comparing the estimated impedance with the pre-calibrated value, the fault location can be determined. The proposed method does not rely on system fault transient information or communication from the remote-end measurement and offers fast and accurate fault location in DC marine distribution systems. The proposed method has been tested and validated on a 750V, 2 MW twin bus DC Commercial Test Facility with the system both de-energised and energised

Electric vehicle battery performance investigation based on real world current harmonics

    Get PDF
Electric vehicle (EV) powertrains consist of power electronic components as well as electric machines to manage the energy flow between different powertrain subsystems and to deliver the necessary torque and power requirements at the wheels. These power subsystems can generate undesired electrical harmonics on the direct current (DC) bus of the powertrain. This may lead to the on-board battery being subjected to DC current superposed with undesirable high- and low- frequency current oscillations, known as ripples. From real-world measurements, significant current harmonics perturbations within the range of 50 Hz to 4 kHz have been observed on the high voltage DC bus of the EV. In the limited literature, investigations into the impact of these harmonics on the degradation of battery systems have been conducted. In these studies, the battery systems were supplied by superposed current signals i.e., DC superposed by a single frequency alternating current (AC). None of these studies considered applying the entire spectrum of the ripple current measured in the real-world scenario, which is focused on in this research. The preliminary results indicate that there is no difference concerning capacity fade or impedance rise between the cells subjected to just DC current and those subjected additionally to a superposed AC ripple current

This work illustrates an analysis of Rogowski coils for power applications, when operating under non ideal measurement conditions. The developed numerical model, validated by comparison with other methods and experiments, enables to investigate the effects of the geometrical and constructive parameters on the measurement behavior of the coil and we also study the behavior of Rogowski coils coupled with bar conductors under quasi-static conditions. Through a finite element (FEM) analysis, we estimate the current distribution across the bar and the flux linked by the transducer for various positions of the primary conductor and for various operating frequencies. Simulation and experimental results are reported in the text. Power quality and electromagnetic compatibility: special report, session 2

    Get PDF
The scope of Session 2 (S2) has been defined as follows by the Session Advisory Group and the Technical Committee: Power Quality (PQ), with the more general concept of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and with some related safety problems in electricity distribution systems. Special focus is put on voltage continuity (supply reliability, problem of outages) and voltage quality (voltage level, flicker, unbalance, harmonics). This session will also look at electromagnetic compatibility (mains frequency to 150 kHz), electromagnetic interferences and electric and magnetic fields issues. Also addressed in this session are electrical safety and immunity concerns (lightning issues, step, touch and transferred voltages). The aim of this special report is to present a synthesis of the present concerns in PQ&EMC, based on all selected papers of session 2 and related papers from other sessions, (152 papers in total). The report is divided in the following 4 blocks: Block 1: Electric and Magnetic Fields, EMC, Earthing systems Block 2: Harmonics Block 3: Voltage Variation Block 4: Power Quality Monitoring Two Round Tables will be organised: - Power quality and EMC in the Future Grid (CIGRE/CIRED WG C4.24, RT 13) - Reliability Benchmarking - why we should do it? What should be done in future? (RT 15

Design of a fast computer-based partial discharge diagnostic system

    Get PDF
Partial discharges cause progressive deterioration of insulating materials working in high voltage conditions and may lead ultimately to insulator failure. Experimental findings indicate that deterioration increases with the number of discharges and is consequently proportional to the magnitude and frequency of the applied voltage. In order to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms of deterioration produced by partial discharges, instrumentation capable of individual pulse resolution is required. A new computer-based partial discharge detection system was designed and constructed to conduct long duration tests on sample capacitors. This system is capable of recording large number of pulses without dead time and producing valuable information related to amplitude, polarity, and charge content of the discharges. The operation of the system is automatic and no human supervision is required during the testing stage. Ceramic capacitors were tested at high voltage in long duration tests. The obtained results indicated that the charge content of partial discharges shift towards high levels of charge as the level of deterioration in the capacitor increases

Detection of Nonlinear Behavior in Voltage Source Converter Control in Wind Farms Based on Higher-Order Spectral Analysis

In recent years, the sub-synchronous oscillation (SSO) accidents caused by wind power have received extensive attention. A method is needed to distinguish if nonlinear behavior exists in the recorded equal-amplitude accident waveforms, so that different methods can be adopted to analyze the mechanism of the oscillation. The theory of higher-order statistics (HOS) has become a powerful tool for detection of nonlinear behavior (DNB) in production quality control since 1960s. However, HOS analysis has been applied in mechanical condition monitoring and fault diagnosis, even after being introduced into the power system and wind farms. This paper focuses on the voltage source converter (VSC) control systems in wind farms and tries to detect the nonlinear behavior caused by the bilateral or unilateral saturation hard limits based on HOS analysis. First, the traditional describing function is extended to obtain more frequency domain information, and hereby the harmonic characteristics of bilateral and the unilateral saturation hard limit are studied. Then the bispectrum and trispectrum are introduced as HOS, which are extended into bicoherence and tricoherence spectrums to eliminate the effects from linear parts in the VSC control system. The effectiveness of DNB and classification based on HOS is strictly proved and its detailed calculation and estimation process is illustrated. Finally, the proposed method is demonstrated and further discussed through simulation results

Time domain analysis of switching transient fields in high voltage substations

    Get PDF
Switching operations of circuit breakers and disconnect switches generate transient currents propagating along the substation busbars. At the moment of switching, the busbars temporarily acts as antennae radiating transient electromagnetic fields within the substations. The radiated fields may interfere and disrupt normal operations of electronic equipment used within the substation for measurement, control and communication purposes. Hence there is the need to fully characterise the substation electromagnetic environment as early as the design stage of substation planning and operation to ensure safe operations of the electronic equipment. This paper deals with the computation of transient electromagnetic fields due to switching within a high voltage air-insulated substation (AIS) using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) metho
