Robust signatures for 3D face registration and recognition
PhDBiometric authentication through face recognition has been an active area of
research for the last few decades, motivated by its application-driven demand. The popularity
of face recognition, compared to other biometric methods, is largely due to its
minimum requirement of subject co-operation, relative ease of data capture and similarity
to the natural way humans distinguish each other.
3D face recognition has recently received particular interest since three-dimensional
face scans eliminate or reduce important limitations of 2D face images, such as illumination
changes and pose variations. In fact, three-dimensional face scans are usually captured
by scanners through the use of a constant structured-light source, making them invariant
to environmental changes in illumination. Moreover, a single 3D scan also captures the
entire face structure and allows for accurate pose normalisation.
However, one of the biggest challenges that still remain in three-dimensional face
scans is the sensitivity to large local deformations due to, for example, facial expressions.
Due to the nature of the data, deformations bring about large changes in the 3D geometry
of the scan. In addition to this, 3D scans are also characterised by noise and artefacts such
as spikes and holes, which are uncommon with 2D images and requires a pre-processing
stage that is speci c to the scanner used to capture the data.
The aim of this thesis is to devise a face signature that is compact in size and
overcomes the above mentioned limitations. We investigate the use of facial regions and
landmarks towards a robust and compact face signature, and we study, implement and
validate a region-based and a landmark-based face signature. Combinations of regions and
landmarks are evaluated for their robustness to pose and expressions, while the matching
scheme is evaluated for its robustness to noise and data artefacts

Face recognition research using automatic or semi-automatic techniques has emerged over the last two decades. One reason for growing interest in this topic is the wide range of possible applications for face recognition systems. Another reason is the emergence of affordable hardware, supporting digital photography and video, which have made the acquisition of high-quality and high resolution 2D images much more ubiquitous. However, 2D recognition systems are sensitive to subject pose and illumination variations and 3D face recognition which is not directly affected by such environmental changes, could be used alone, or in combination with 2D recognition.
Recently with the development of more affordable 3D acquisition systems and the availability of 3D face databases, 3D face recognition has been attracting interest to tackle the limitations in performance of most existing 2D systems. In this research, we introduce a robust automated 3D Face recognition system that implements 3D data of faces with different facial expressions, hair, shoulders, clothing, etc., extracts features for discrimination and uses machine learning techniques to make the final decision.
A novel system for automatic processing for 3D facial data has been implemented using multi stage architecture; in a pre-processing and registration stage the data was standardized, spikes were removed, holes were filled and the face area was extracted. Then the nose region, which is
relatively more rigid than other facial regions in an anatomical sense, was automatically located and analysed by computing the precise location of the symmetry plane. Then useful facial features and a set of effective 3D curves were extracted. Finally, the recognition and matching stage was implemented by using cascade correlation neural networks and support vector machine for classification, and the nearest neighbour algorithms for matching.
It is worth noting that the FRGC data set is the most challenging data set available supporting research on 3D face recognition and machine learning techniques are widely recognised as appropriate and efficient classification methods
A efficient and practical 3D face scanner using near infrared and visible photometric stereo
AbstractThis paper is concerned with the acquisition of model data for automatic 3D face recognition applications. As 3D methods become progressively more popular in face recognition research, the need for fast and accurate data capture has become crucial. This paper is motivated by this need and offers three primary contributions. Firstly, the paper demonstrates that four-source photometric stereo offers a potential means for data capture that is computationally nd financially viable and easily deployable in commercial settings. We have shown that both visible light and less ntrusive near infrared light is suitable for facial illumination. The second contribution is a detailed set of experimental esults that compare the accuracy of the device to ground truth, which was captured using a commercial projected pattern range finder. Importantly, we show that not only is near infrared light a valid alternative to the more commonly xploited visible light, but that it actually gives more accurate reconstructions. Finally, we assess the validity of the Lambertian assumption on skin reflectance data and show that better results may be obtained by incorporating more dvanced reflectance functions, such as the OrenβNayar model
Quantification of Facial Traits
Measuring facial traits by quantitative means is a prerequisite to investigate epidemiological, clinical, and forensic questions. This measurement process has received intense attention in recent years. We divided this process into the registration of the face, landmarking, morphometric quantification, and dimension reduction. Face registration is the process of standardizing pose and landmarking annotates positions in the face with anatomic description or mathematically defined properties (pseudolandmarks). Morphometric quantification computes pre-specified transformations such as distances. Landmarking: We review face registration methods which are required by some landmarking methods. Although similar, face registration and landmarking are distinct problems. The registration phase can be seen as a pre-processing step and can be combined independently with a landmarking solution. Existing approaches for landmarking differ in their data requirements, modeling approach, and training complexity. In this review, we focus on 3D surface data as captured by commercial surface scanners but also cover methods for 2D facial pictures, when methodology overlaps. We discuss the broad categories of active shape models, template based approaches, recent deep-learning algorithms, and variations thereof such as hybrid algorithms. The type of algorithm chosen depends on the availability of pre-trained models for the data at hand, availability of an appropriate landmark set, accuracy characteristics, and training complexity. Quantification: Landmarking of anatomical landmarks is usually augmented by pseudo-landmarks, i.e., indirectly defined landmarks that densely cover the scan surface. Such a rich data set is not amenable to direct analysis but is reduced in dimensionality for downstream analysis. We review classic dimension reduction techniques used for facial data and face specific measures, such as geometric measurements and manifold learning. Geometric Expression Invariant 3D Face Recognition using Statistical Discriminant Models
Currently there is no complete face recognition system that is invariant to all facial expressions.
Although humans find it easy to identify and recognise faces regardless of changes in illumination,
pose and expression, producing a computer system with a similar capability has proved to
be particularly di cult. Three dimensional face models are geometric in nature and therefore
have the advantage of being invariant to head pose and lighting. However they are still susceptible
to facial expressions. This can be seen in the decrease in the recognition results using
principal component analysis when expressions are added to a data set.
In order to achieve expression-invariant face recognition systems, we have employed a tensor
algebra framework to represent 3D face data with facial expressions in a parsimonious
space. Face variation factors are organised in particular subject and facial expression modes.
We manipulate this using single value decomposition on sub-tensors representing one variation
mode. This framework possesses the ability to deal with the shortcomings of PCA in less constrained
environments and still preserves the integrity of the 3D data. The results show improved
recognition rates for faces and facial expressions, even recognising high intensity expressions
that are not in the training datasets.
We have determined, experimentally, a set of anatomical landmarks that best describe facial
expression e ectively. We found that the best placement of landmarks to distinguish di erent
facial expressions are in areas around the prominent features, such as the cheeks and eyebrows.
Recognition results using landmark-based face recognition could be improved with better placement.
We looked into the possibility of achieving expression-invariant face recognition by reconstructing
and manipulating realistic facial expressions. We proposed a tensor-based statistical
discriminant analysis method to reconstruct facial expressions and in particular to neutralise
facial expressions. The results of the synthesised facial expressions are visually more realistic
than facial expressions generated using conventional active shape modelling (ASM). We
then used reconstructed neutral faces in the sub-tensor framework for recognition purposes.
The recognition results showed slight improvement. Besides biometric recognition, this novel
tensor-based synthesis approach could be used in computer games and real-time animation
applications
Computational Imaging for Shape Understanding
Geometry is the essential property of real-world scenes. Understanding the shape of the object is critical to many computer vision applications. In this dissertation, we explore using computational imaging approaches to recover the geometry of real-world scenes. Computational imaging is an emerging technique that uses the co-designs of image hardware and computational software to expand the capacity of traditional cameras. To tackle face recognition in the uncontrolled environment, we study 2D color image and 3D shape to deal with body movement and self-occlusion. Especially, we use multiple RGB-D cameras to fuse the varying pose and register the front face in a unified coordinate system. The deep color feature and geodesic distance feature have been used to complete face recognition. To handle the underwater image application, we study the angular-spatial encoding and polarization state encoding of light rays using computational imaging devices. Specifically, we use the light field camera to tackle the challenging problem of underwater 3D reconstruction. We leverage the angular sampling of the light field for robust depth estimation. We also develop a fast ray marching algorithm to improve the efficiency of the algorithm. To deal with arbitrary reflectance, we investigate polarimetric imaging and develop polarimetric Helmholtz stereopsis that uses reciprocal polarimetric image pairs for high-fidelity 3D surface reconstruction. We formulate new reciprocity and diffuse/specular polarimetric constraints to recover surface depths and normals using an optimization framework. To recover the 3D shape in the unknown and uncontrolled natural illumination, we use two circularly polarized spotlights to boost the polarization cues corrupted by the environment lighting, as well as to provide photometric cues. To mitigate the effect of uncontrolled environment light in photometric constraints, we estimate a lighting proxy map and iteratively refine the normal and lighting estimation. Through expensive experiments on the simulated and real images, we demonstrate that our proposed computational imaging methods outperform traditional imaging approaches
Comparing Features of Three-Dimensional Object Models Using Registration Based on Surface Curvature Signatures
This dissertation presents a technique for comparing local shape properties for similar three-dimensional objects represented by meshes. Our novel shape representation, the curvature map, describes shape as a function of surface curvature in the region around a point. A multi-pass approach is applied to the curvature map to detect features at different scales. The feature detection step does not require user input or parameter tuning. We use features ordered by strength, the similarity of pairs of features, and pruning based on geometric consistency to efficiently determine key corresponding locations on the objects. For genus zero objects, the corresponding locations are used to generate a consistent spherical parameterization that defines the point-to-point correspondence used for the final shape comparison
