    Towards reliable geographic broadcasting in vehicular networks

    In Vehicular ad hoc Networks (VANETs), safety-related messages are broadcasted amongst cars, helping to improve drivers' awareness of the road situation. VANETs’ reliability are highly affected by channel contention. This thesis first addresses the issue of channel use efficiency in geographical broadcasts (geocasts). Constant connectivity changes inside a VANET make the existing routing algorithms unsuitable. This thesis presents a geocast algorithm that uses a metric to estimate the ratio of useful to useless packet received. Simulations showed that this algorithm is more channel-efficient than the farthest-first strategy. It also exposes a parameter, allowing it to adapt to channel load. Second, this thesis presents a method of estimating channel load for providing feedback to moderate the offered load. A theoretical model showing the relationship between channel load and the idle time between transmissions is presented and used to estimate channel contention. Unsaturated stations on the network were shown to have small but observable effects on this relationship. In simulations, channel estimators based on this model show higher accuracy and faster convergence time than by observing packet collisions. These estimators are also less affected by unsaturated stations than by observing packet collisions. Third, this thesis couples the channel estimator to the geocast algorithm, producing a closed-loop load-reactive system that allows geocasts to adapt to instantaneous channel conditions. Simulations showed that this system is not only shown to be more efficient in channel use and be able to adapt to channel contention, but is also able to self-correct suboptimal retransmission decisions. Finally, this thesis demonstrates that all tested network simulators exhibit unexpected behaviours when simulating broadcasts. This thesis describes in depth the error in ns-3, leading to a set of workarounds that allows results from most versions of ns-3 to be interpreted correctly

    Experimental Evaluation of Large Scale WiFi Multicast Rate Control

    WiFi multicast to very large groups has gained attention as a solution for multimedia delivery in crowded areas. Yet, most recently proposed schemes do not provide performance guarantees and none have been tested at scale. To address the issue of providing high multicast throughput with performance guarantees, we present the design and experimental evaluation of the Multicast Dynamic Rate Adaptation (MuDRA) algorithm. MuDRA balances fast adaptation to channel conditions and stability, which is essential for multimedia applications. MuDRA relies on feedback from some nodes collected via a light-weight protocol and dynamically adjusts the rate adaptation response time. Our experimental evaluation of MuDRA on the ORBIT testbed with over 150 nodes shows that MuDRA outperforms other schemes and supports high throughput multicast flows to hundreds of receivers while meeting quality requirements. MuDRA can support multiple high quality video streams, where 90% of the nodes report excellent or very good video quality

    Network coding-aided MAC protocols for cooperative wireless networks

    The introduction of third generation (3G) technologies has caused a vast proliferation of wireless devices and networks, generating an increasing demand for high level Quality of Service (QoS). The wide spread of mobile applications has further reinforced the user need for communication, motivating at the same time the concepts of user cooperation and data dissemination. However, this trend towards continuous exchange of information and ubiquitous connectivity is inherently restricted by the energy-greedy functionalities of high-end devices. These limitations, along with the pressure exerted on the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry towards energy awareness, have induced the design of novel energy efficient schemes and algorithms. In this context, the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer plays a key role, since it is mainly responsible for the channel access regulation, the transmission scheduling and the resource allocation, thus constituting an appropriate point to effectively address energy efficiency issues that arise due to the users overcrowding. This dissertation provides a contribution to the design, analysis and evaluation of novel MAC protocols for cooperative wireless networks. In our attempt to design energy efficient MAC schemes, we were extensively assisted by the introduction of new techniques, such as Network Coding (NC), that intrinsically bring considerable gains in system performance. The main thesis contributions are divided into two parts. The first part presents NCCARQ, a novel NC-aided Cooperative Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) MAC protocol for wireless networks. NCCARQ introduces a new access paradigm for cooperative ARQ schemes, exploiting NC benefits in bidirectional communication among wireless users. The NCCARQ performance in terms of QoS and energy efficiency is assessed by means of analytical probabilistic models and extensive computer-based simulations, revealing the significant gains we can achieve compared to standardized MAC solutions. In addition, the impact of realistic wireless channel conditions on the MAC protocol operation further motivated us to study the NCCARQ performance in wireless links affected by correlated shadowing, showing that the channel correlation may adversely affect the distributed cooperation benefits. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to the investigation of MAC issues in wireless data dissemination scenarios. In particular, the existence of multiple source nodes in such scenarios generates conflicting situations, considering the selfish behavior of the wireless devices that want to maximize their battery lifetime. Bearing in mind the energy efficiency importance, we propose game theoretic medium access strategies, applying energy-based utility functions which inherently imply energy awareness. In addition, Random Linear NC (RLNC) techniques are adopted to eliminate the need of exchanging excessive control packets, while Analog NC (ANC) is employed to efface the impact of collisions throughout the communication. During the elaboration of this thesis, two general key conclusions have been extracted. First, there is a fundamental requirement for implementation of new MAC protocols in order to effectively deal with state-of-the-art techniques (e.g., NC), recently introduced to enhance both the performance and the energy efficiency of the network. Second, we highlight the importance of designing novel energy efficient MAC protocols, taking into account that traditional approaches - designed mainly to assist the collision avoidance in wireless networks - tend to be obsolete.La presente tesis doctoral contribuye al diseño, análisis y evaluación de nuevos protocolos MAC cooperativos para redes inalámbricas. La introducción de nuevas técnicas, tales como la codificación de red (NC), que intrínsecamente llevan un considerable aumento en el rendimiento del sistema, nos ayudó ampliamente durante el diseño de protocolos MAC energéticamente eficientes. Las principales contribuciones de esta tesis se dividen en dos partes. La primera parte presenta el NCCARQ, un protocolo cooperativo de retransmisión automática (ARQ), asistido por NC para redes inalámbricas. La segunda parte de la tesis se centra en el diseño de protocolos de capa MAC en escenarios inalámbricos de difusión de datos. Teniendo en cuenta la importancia de la eficiencia energética, se proponen técnicas de acceso al medio basadas en teoría de juegos dónde las funciones objetivo están motivadas por el consumo energético.     Controlo de acesso ao meio em comunicações veiculares de tempo-real

    Despite several preventive measures, the number of roadway accidents is still very high, being considered even a problem of public health by some entities. This thesis has as global purpose of contributing to the reduction of that number of accidents, and consequent fatalities, by using safety-related applications that use communication among vehicles. In particular, the primary goal is guaranteeing that communication between users in vehicular environments is done with appropriate time bounds to transfer safety-critical information. In detail, it is studied how to manage the scheduling of message’s transmissions (medium access control - MAC), in order to define precisely who will communicate and when is the appropriate instant. The preferable situation where a communication infrastructure is present with full coverage (RSUs) is also studied, from which medium access control is defined precisely, and vehicles (OBUs) become aware of medium utilization. Also, sporadic situations (e.g., absence of RSUs) are studied in which the communication network is “ad hoc” and solely formed by the current vehicles. It is used the recently WAVE / IEEE 802.11p standard, specific for vehicular communications, and it is proposed a TDMA based solution, with appropriate coordination between RSUs in order to effectively disseminate a critical safety event. It is taken into account two different ways of choosing the instant for the initial broadcast, and both cases are compared. In case there is no infrastructure available, methods are derived to minimize communication medium access collisions, and to maximize the available bandwidth. The results reflect the total end-to-end delay, and show that adequate times are attained, and meet with the requisites for the type of applications being considered. Also, enhancements are obtained when using the alternate choice for the initial broadcast instant.Apesar de diversas medidas preventivas, o número de acidentes rodoviários continua a ser muito elevado, sendo mesmo considerado uma questão de saúde pública por algumas entidades. Esta tese tem como objetivo geral contribuir para a redução desse número de acidentes, e consequentes fatalidades, através da utilização de aplicações de segurança que envolvem comunicação entre veículos. Em particular, o objetivo principal é garantir que a comunicação entre utentes, em ambientes veiculares, seja efetuada com limites temporais apropriados à transferência de informações críticas. De forma mais detalhada, é estudada a gestão do escalonamento das transmissões (controlo de acesso ao meio – MAC) que irá definir quem vai comunicar e quando o pode fazer. São estudadas situações (desejadas) onde há uma infra-estrutura de comunicações com cobertura integral (RSUs), a partir da qual se faz a coordenação do acesso ao meio pelos veículos (OBUs), e situações (esporádicas, por ausência de RSU) em que a rede de comunicação é “ad hoc” e apenas constituída pelos veículos presentes. Utiliza-se a recente norma WAVE / IEEE 802.11p, específica para comunicações veiculares, e propõe-se uma solução baseada em TDMA, com coordenação apropriada entre RSUs para disseminação efetiva de um evento crítico de segurança. A escolha do instante para o broadcast inicial do evento de segurança também é tida em conta, e são comparados dois casos distintos. No caso da ausência de infraestrutura, derivam-se métodos para minimizar colisões no acesso ao meio de comunicação, e maximizar a largura de banda disponível. Os resultados refletem o atraso total end-to-end, mostrando tempos apropriados para os requisitos das aplicações em causa, e evidenciando melhorias aquando da escolha alternativa para o instante do broadcast inicial.Programa Doutoral em Engenharia Eletrotécnic

    Analysis of the impact of wireless mobile devices in critical industrial applications

    The main objective of the thesis is to study the impact of mobile nodes in industrial applications with strict reliability and time constraints in both centralized and decentralized topologies. Considering the harsh wireless channel conditions of industrial environments, that goal implies a considerable challenge. In order not to compromise the performance of the system, a deterministic Real-Time (RT) communication protocol is needed, along with a mechanism to deal with changes in the topology due to the movements of the wireless devices. The existing wireless standard technologies do not satisfy the requirements demanded by the most critical industrial applications such as Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and, thus, wired communication cannot be directly replaced by wireless solutions. Nevertheless, the adoption of wireless communications can be seen as an extension to the existing wired networks to create hybrid networks with mobility requirements. The design of a proper communication solution depends mainly on the choice of the Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol, which is responsible for controlling access to the medium and thereby plays a vital role in decreasing latency and packet errors. Furthermore, the changes in the topology due to the movement of the wireless devices must be managed correctly in order not to affect the performance of the entire network. In this doctoral thesis, a hybrid centralized architecture designed for industrial applications with strict requirements in terms of robustness, determinism and RT is proposed and evaluated. For that, a wireless RT MAC scheme based on the IEEE 802.11 physical layer is proposed along with a Real-Time Ethernet (RTE) MAC scheme. This hybrid system ensures seamless communication between both media. With the aim of including mobile devices in the proposed architecture, a soft-handover algorithm is designed and evaluated. This algorithm guarantees an uninterrupted communication during the handover process without the need for a second radio interface and with a reduced growth in network overhead. Finally, the impact of mobile nodes in a decentralized wireless topology is analysed. For that, the Self-Organizing Time Division Multiple Access (STDMA) protocol is evaluated to analyse its viability as an alternative to carrying out a handover in industrial applications without centralized systems.El objetivo principal de la tesis es estudiar el impacto de los nodos móviles en las aplicaciones inalámbricas industriales con requisitos estrictos de tiempo y robustez tanto para topologías centralizadas como descentralizadas. Este objetivo supone un gran desafío dadas las adversas condiciones del canal inalámbrico en los entornos industriales. Para no comprometer el rendimiento del sistema, es necesario un protocolo de comunicación determinista y con garantías de tiempo real, junto con un mecanismo para hacer frente a los cambios en la topología debido al movimiento de los dispositivos inalámbricos. Las tecnologías estándar inalámbricas existentes no satisfacen los requisitos exigidos por las aplicaciones industriales más críticas, como los Sistemas de Control Distribuido (DCS - Distributed Control Systems) y, por lo tanto, las comunicaciones cableadas no pueden ser reemplazadas directamente por soluciones inalámbricas. Sin embargo, la adopción de las comunicaciones inalámbricas puede verse como una extensión de las redes cableadas existentes con el objetivo de crear redes híbridas con requisitos de movilidad. El diseño de una solución de comunicación adecuada depende principalmente de la elección del protocolo de control de acceso al medio (MAC - Medium Access Control), el cual, desempeña un papel vital en la disminución de la latencia y del número de paquetes erróneos. Además, los cambios en la topología debidos al movimiento de los dispositivos inalámbricos deben gestionarse correctamente para que el rendimiento de toda la red no se vea afectado. En esta tesis doctoral se propone y se evalúa una arquitectura híbrida centralizada diseñada para aplicaciones industriales con requisitos estrictos de robustez, determinismo y tiempo real. Para ello, se propone un esquema MAC inalámbrico con garantías de tiempo real basado en la capa física IEEE 802.11 junto con un esquema MAC basado en Ethernet en tiempo real (RTE - Real-Time Ethernet). Este esquema híbrido garantiza una comunicación continua entre ambos medios de comunicación. Con el objetivo de incluir dispositivos móviles en la arquitectura propuesta, se propone y evalúa un algoritmo de soft-handover. Este algoritmo garantiza una comunicación ininterrumpida durante el proceso de handover sin la necesidad de una segunda interfaz de radio y con un aumento reducido de la sobrecarga de la red. Finalmente, se analiza el impacto de los nodos móviles en una topología inalámbrica descentralizada. Para ello, se evalúa el protocolo del estado del arte Self-Organizing Time Division Multiple Access (STDMA) con el objetivo de analizar su viabilidad como alternativa para realizar un handover en las aplicaciones industriales sin sistemas centralizados.Tesi honen helburu nagusia, nodo mugikorrek fidagarritasun eta denboraren aldetik baldintza ugari eskatzen duten aplikazio industrial zentralizatu eta deszentralizatuetan duten eragina aztertzea da.     GORA: Goodput Optimal Rate Adaptation for 802.11 using Medium Status Estimation,”

    Abstract-Rate Adaptation for 802.11 has been deeply investigated in the past, but the problem of achieving optimal Rate Adaptation with respect not only to channel-related errors but also to contention-related issues (i.e., collisions and variations in medium access times) is still unsolved. In this paper we address this issue by proposing 1) a practical definition of the Medium Status in a multi-user 802.11 scenario in terms of channel errors, MAC collisions and packet service times, and a method for its estimation based on measurements; 2) an analytical model of the goodput performance as a function of the Medium Status; 3) a rate adaptation algorithm, called Goodput Optimal Rate Adaptation (GORA), which is based on this model. Unlike other Rate Adaptation schemes proposed in literature, which require either modifications to the IEEE 802.11 standard or cooperation among nodes, GORA is totally stand-alone and standard compliant. In fact, the Medium Status Estimation used by GORA is obtained by using standard MAC counters that are commonly collected by commercial MAC drivers, and no explicit interactions with the other devices in the network is required. Therefore, GORA offers the advantage of being readily deployable on real devices. The performance of GORA is evaluated through NS2 simulations which reveal that, as expected, GORA outperforms other wellknown Rate Adaptation algorithms in several scenarios and can be used as a new reference benchmark

    LINK ADAPTATION IN WIRELESS NETWORKS: A CROSS-LAYER APPROACH

    Conventional Link Adaptation Techniques in wireless networks aim to overcome harsh link conditions caused by physical environmental properties, by adaptively regulating modulation, coding and other signal and protocol specific parameters. These techniques are essential for the overall performance of the networks, especially for environments where the ambient noise level is high or the noise level changes rapidly. Link adaptation techniques answer the questions of What to change? and When to change? in order to improve the present layer performance. Once these decisions are made, other layers are expected to function perfectly with the new communication channel conditions. In our work, we have shown that this assumption does not always hold; and provide two mechanisms that lessen the negative outcomes caused by these decisions. Our first solution, MORAL, is a MAC layer link adaptation technique which utilizes the physical transmission information in order to create differentiation between wireless users with different communication capabilities. MORAL passively collects information from its neighbors and re-aligns the MAC layer parameters according to the observed conditions. MORAL improves the fairness and total throughput of the system through distributing the mutually shared network assets to the wireless users in a fairer manner, according to their capabilities. Our second solution, Data Rate and Fragmentation Aware Ad-hoc Routing protocol, is a network layer link adaptation technique which utilizes the physical transmission information in order to differentiate the wireless links according to their communication capabilities. The proposed mechanism takes the physical transmission parameters into account during the path creation process and produces energy-efficient network paths. The research demonstrated in this dissertation contributes to our understanding of link adaptation techniques and broadens the scope of such techniques beyond simple, one-step physical parameter adjustments. We have designed and implemented two cross-layer mechanisms that utilize the physical layer information to better adapt to the varying channel conditions caused by physical link adaptation mechanisms. These mechanisms has shown that even though the Link Adaptation concept starts at the physical layer, its effects are by no means restricted to this layer; and the wireless networks can benefit considerably by expanding the scope of this concept throughout the entire network stack
