Personalized Purchase Prediction of Market Baskets with Wasserstein-Based Sequence Matching
Personalization in marketing aims at improving the shopping experience of
customers by tailoring services to individuals. In order to achieve this,
businesses must be able to make personalized predictions regarding the next
purchase. That is, one must forecast the exact list of items that will comprise
the next purchase, i.e., the so-called market basket. Despite its relevance to
firm operations, this problem has received surprisingly little attention in
prior research, largely due to its inherent complexity. In fact,
state-of-the-art approaches are limited to intuitive decision rules for pattern
extraction. However, the simplicity of the pre-coded rules impedes performance,
since decision rules operate in an autoregressive fashion: the rules can only
make inferences from past purchases of a single customer without taking into
account the knowledge transfer that takes place between customers. In contrast,
our research overcomes the limitations of pre-set rules by contributing a novel
predictor of market baskets from sequential purchase histories: our predictions
are based on similarity matching in order to identify similar purchase habits
among the complete shopping histories of all customers. Our contributions are
as follows: (1) We propose similarity matching based on subsequential dynamic
time warping (SDTW) as a novel predictor of market baskets. Thereby, we can
effectively identify cross-customer patterns. (2) We leverage the Wasserstein
distance for measuring the similarity among embedded purchase histories. (3) We
develop a fast approximation algorithm for computing a lower bound of the
Wasserstein distance in our setting. An extensive series of computational
experiments demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach. The accuracy of
identifying the exact market baskets based on state-of-the-art decision rules

Visual Search at eBay
In this paper, we propose a novel end-to-end approach for scalable visual
search infrastructure. We discuss the challenges we faced for a massive
volatile inventory like at eBay and present our solution to overcome those. We
harness the availability of large image collection of eBay listings and
state-of-the-art deep learning techniques to perform visual search at scale.
Supervised approach for optimized search limited to top predicted categories
and also for compact binary signature are key to scale up without compromising
accuracy and precision. Both use a common deep neural network requiring only a
single forward inference. The system architecture is presented with in-depth
discussions of its basic components and optimizations for a trade-off between
search relevance and latency. This solution is currently deployed in a
distributed cloud infrastructure and fuels visual search in eBay ShopBot and
Close5. We show benchmark on ImageNet dataset on which our approach is faster
and more accurate than several unsupervised baselines. We share our learnings
with the hope that visual search becomes a first class citizen for all large

Supporting Data mining of large databases by visual feedback queries
In this paper, we describe a query system that provides visual relevance feedback in querying large databases. Our goal is to support the process of data mining by representing as many data items as possible on the display. By arranging and coloring the data items as pixels according to their relevance for the query, the user gets a visual impression of the resulting data set. Using an interactive query interface, the user may change the query dynamically and receives immediate feedback by the visual representation of the resulting data set. Furthermore, by using multiple windows for different parts of a complex query, the user gets visual feedback for each part of the query and, therefore, may easier understand the overall result. Our system allows to represent the largest amount of data that can be visualized on current display technology, provides valuable feedback in querying the database, and allows the user to find results which, otherwise, would remain hidden in the database
