    Adaptive measurement filter: efficient strategy for optimal estimation of quantum Markov chains

    Continuous-time measurements are instrumental for a multitude of tasks in quantum engineering and quantum control, including the estimation of dynamical parameters of open quantum systems monitored through the environment. However, such measurements do not extract the maximum amount of information available in the output state, so finding alternative optimal measurement strategies is a major open problem. In this paper we solve this problem in the setting of discrete-time input-output quantum Markov chains. We present an efficient algorithm for optimal estimation of one-dimensional dynamical parameters which consists of an iterative procedure for updating a `measurement filter' operator and determining successive measurement bases for the output units. A key ingredient of the scheme is the use of a coherent quantum absorber as a way to post-process the output after the interaction with the system. This is designed adaptively such that the joint system and absorber stationary state is pure at a reference parameter value. The scheme offers an exciting prospect for optimal continuous-time adaptive measurements, but more work is needed to find realistic practical implementations.Comment: 25 pages 7 figure

    Machine Learning Research Trends in Africa: A 30 Years Overview with Bibliometric Analysis Review

    In this paper, a critical bibliometric analysis study is conducted, coupled with an extensive literature survey on recent developments and associated applications in machine learning research with a perspective on Africa. The presented bibliometric analysis study consists of 2761 machine learning-related documents, of which 98% were articles with at least 482 citations published in 903 journals during the past 30 years. Furthermore, the collated documents were retrieved from the Science Citation Index EXPANDED, comprising research publications from 54 African countries between 1993 and 2021. The bibliometric study shows the visualization of the current landscape and future trends in machine learning research and its application to facilitate future collaborative research and knowledge exchange among authors from different research institutions scattered across the African continent

    Dynamic Coarse-to-Fine Learning for Oriented Tiny Object Detection

    Detecting arbitrarily oriented tiny objects poses intense challenges to existing detectors, especially for label assignment. Despite the exploration of adaptive label assignment in recent oriented object detectors, the extreme geometry shape and limited feature of oriented tiny objects still induce severe mismatch and imbalance issues. Specifically, the position prior, positive sample feature, and instance are mismatched, and the learning of extreme-shaped objects is biased and unbalanced due to little proper feature supervision. To tackle these issues, we propose a dynamic prior along with the coarse-to-fine assigner, dubbed DCFL. For one thing, we model the prior, label assignment, and object representation all in a dynamic manner to alleviate the mismatch issue. For another, we leverage the coarse prior matching and finer posterior constraint to dynamically assign labels, providing appropriate and relatively balanced supervision for diverse instances. Extensive experiments on six datasets show substantial improvements to the baseline. Notably, we obtain the state-of-the-art performance for one-stage detectors on the DOTA-v1.5, DOTA-v2.0, and DIOR-R datasets under single-scale training and testing.     Discovering the hidden structure of financial markets through bayesian modelling

    Understanding what is driving the price of a financial asset is a question that is currently mostly unanswered. In this work we go beyond the classic one step ahead prediction and instead construct models that create new information on the behaviour of these time series. Our aim is to get a better understanding of the hidden structures that drive the moves of each financial time series and thus the market as a whole. We propose a tool to decompose multiple time series into economically-meaningful variables to explain the endogenous and exogenous factors driving their underlying variability. The methodology we introduce goes beyond the direct model forecast. Indeed, since our model continuously adapts its variables and coefficients, we can study the time series of coefficients and selected variables. We also present a model to construct the causal graph of relations between these time series and include them in the exogenous factors. Hence, we obtain a model able to explain what is driving the move of both each specific time series and the market as a whole. In addition, the obtained graph of the time series provides new information on the underlying risk structure of this environment. With this deeper understanding of the hidden structure we propose novel ways to detect and forecast risks in the market. We investigate our results with inferences up to one month into the future using stocks, FX futures and ETF futures, demonstrating its superior performance according to accuracy of large moves, longer-term prediction and consistency over time. We also go in more details on the economic interpretation of the new variables and discuss the created graph structure of the market.Open Acces

    Statistical-dynamical analyses and modelling of multi-scale ocean variability

    This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of multi-scale oceanic variabilities using various statistical and dynamical tools and explore the data-driven methods for correct statistical emulation of the oceans. We considered the classical, wind-driven, double-gyre ocean circulation model in quasi-geostrophic approximation and obtained its eddy-resolving solutions in terms of potential vorticity anomaly and geostrophic streamfunctions. The reference solutions possess two asymmetric gyres of opposite circulations and a strong meandering eastward jet separating them with rich eddy activities around it, such as the Gulf Stream in the North Atlantic and Kuroshio in the North Pacific. This thesis is divided into two parts. The first part discusses a novel scale-separation method based on the local spatial correlations, called correlation-based decomposition (CBD), and provides a comprehensive analysis of mesoscale eddy forcing. In particular, we analyse the instantaneous and time-lagged interactions between the diagnosed eddy forcing and the evolving large-scale PVA using the novel `product integral' characteristics. The product integral time series uncover robust causality between two drastically different yet interacting flow quantities, termed `eddy backscatter'. We also show data-driven augmentation of non-eddy-resolving ocean models by feeding them the eddy fields to restore the missing eddy-driven features, such as the merging western boundary currents, their eastward extension and low-frequency variabilities of gyres. In the second part, we present a systematic inter-comparison of Linear Regression (LR), stochastic and deep-learning methods to build low-cost reduced-order statistical emulators of the oceans. We obtain the forecasts on seasonal and centennial timescales and assess them for their skill, cost and complexity. We found that the multi-level linear stochastic model performs the best, followed by the ``hybrid stochastically-augmented deep learning models''. The superiority of these methods underscores the importance of incorporating core dynamics, memory effects and model errors for robust emulation of multi-scale dynamical systems, such as the oceans.Open Acces

    Underwater optical wireless communications in turbulent conditions: from simulation to experimentation

    Underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) is a technology that aims to apply high speed optical wireless communication (OWC) techniques to the underwater channel. UOWC has the potential to provide high speed links over relatively short distances as part of a hybrid underwater network, along with radio frequency (RF) and underwater acoustic communications (UAC) technologies. However, there are some difficulties involved in developing a reliable UOWC link, namely, the complexity of the channel. The main focus throughout this thesis is to develop a greater understanding of the effects of the UOWC channel, especially underwater turbulence. This understanding is developed from basic theory through to simulation and experimental studies in order to gain a holistic understanding of turbulence in the UOWC channel. This thesis first presents a method of modelling optical underwater turbulence through simulation that allows it to be examined in conjunction with absorption and scattering. In a stationary channel, this turbulence induced scattering is shown to cause and increase both spatial and temporal spreading at the receiver plane. It is also demonstrated using the technique presented that the relative impact of turbulence on a received signal is lower in a highly scattering channel, showing an in-built resilience of these channels. Received intensity distributions are presented confirming that fluctuations in received power from this method follow the commonly used Log-Normal fading model. The impact of turbulence - as measured using this new modelling framework - on link performance, in terms of maximum achievable data rate and bit error rate is equally investigated. Following that, experimental studies comparing both the relative impact of turbulence induced scattering on coherent and non-coherent light propagating through water and the relative impact of turbulence in different water conditions are presented. It is shown that the scintillation index increases with increasing temperature inhomogeneity in the underwater channel. These results indicate that a light beam from a non-coherent source has a greater resilience to temperature inhomogeneity induced turbulence effect in an underwater channel. These results will help researchers in simulating realistic channel conditions when modelling a light emitting diode (LED) based intensity modulation with direct detection (IM/DD) UOWC link. Finally, a comparison of different modulation schemes in still and turbulent water conditions is presented. Using an underwater channel emulator, it is shown that pulse position modulation (PPM) and subcarrier intensity modulation (SIM) have an inherent resilience to turbulence induced fading with SIM achieving higher data rates under all conditions. The signal processing technique termed pair-wise coding (PWC) is applied to SIM in underwater optical wireless communications for the first time. The performance of PWC is compared with the, state-of-the-art, bit and power loading optimisation algorithm. Using PWC, a maximum data rate of 5.2 Gbps is achieved in still water conditions

    The Role of Transient Vibration of the Skull on Concussion

    Concussion is a traumatic brain injury usually caused by a direct or indirect blow to the head that affects brain function. The maximum mechanical impedance of the brain tissue occurs at 450±50 Hz and may be affected by the skull resonant frequencies. After an impact to the head, vibration resonance of the skull damages the underlying cortex. The skull deforms and vibrates, like a bell for 3 to 5 milliseconds, bruising the cortex. Furthermore, the deceleration forces the frontal and temporal cortex against the skull, eliminating a layer of cerebrospinal fluid. When the skull vibrates, the force spreads directly to the cortex, with no layer of cerebrospinal fluid to reflect the wave or cushion its force. To date, there is few researches investigating the effect of transient vibration of the skull. Therefore, the overall goal of the proposed research is to gain better understanding of the role of transient vibration of the skull on concussion. This goal will be achieved by addressing three research objectives. First, a MRI skull and brain segmentation automatic technique is developed. Due to bones’ weak magnetic resonance signal, MRI scans struggle with differentiating bone tissue from other structures. One of the most important components for a successful segmentation is high-quality ground truth labels. Therefore, we introduce a deep learning framework for skull segmentation purpose where the ground truth labels are created from CT imaging using the standard tessellation language (STL). Furthermore, the brain region will be important for a future work, thus, we explore a new initialization concept of the convolutional neural network (CNN) by orthogonal moments to improve brain segmentation in MRI. Second, the creation of a novel 2D and 3D Automatic Method to Align the Facial Skeleton is introduced. An important aspect for further impact analysis is the ability to precisely simulate the same point of impact on multiple bone models. To perform this task, the skull must be precisely aligned in all anatomical planes. Therefore, we introduce a 2D/3D technique to align the facial skeleton that was initially developed for automatically calculating the craniofacial symmetry midline. In the 2D version, the entire concept of using cephalometric landmarks and manual image grid alignment to construct the training dataset was introduced. Then, this concept was extended to a 3D version where coronal and transverse planes are aligned using CNN approach. As the alignment in the sagittal plane is still undefined, a new alignment based on these techniques will be created to align the sagittal plane using Frankfort plane as a framework. Finally, the resonant frequencies of multiple skulls are assessed to determine how the skull resonant frequency vibrations propagate into the brain tissue. After applying material properties and mesh to the skull, modal analysis is performed to assess the skull natural frequencies. Finally, theories will be raised regarding the relation between the skull geometry, such as shape and thickness, and vibration with brain tissue injury, which may result in concussive injury

    Development of MEMS - based IMU for position estimation: comparison of sensor fusion solutions

    With the surge of inexpensive, widely accessible, and precise Micro-Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) in recent years, inertial systems tracking move ment have become ubiquitous nowadays. Contrary to Global Positioning Sys tem (GPS)-based positioning, Inertial Navigation System (INS) are intrinsically unaffected by signal jamming, blockage susceptibilities, and spoofing. Measure ments from inertial sensors are also acquired at elevated sampling rates and may be numerically integrated to estimate position and orientation knowledge. These measurements are precise on a small-time scale but gradually accumulate errors over extended periods. Combining multiple inertial sensors in a method known as sensor fusion makes it possible to produce a more consistent and dependable un derstanding of the system, decreasing accumulative errors. Several sensor fusion algorithms occur in literature aimed at estimating the Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS) of a rigid body with respect to a reference frame. This work describes the development and implementation of a low-cost, multi purpose INS for position and orientation estimation. Additionally, it presents an experimental comparison of a series of sensor fusion solutions and benchmarking their performance on estimating the position of a moving object. Results show a correlation between what sensors are trusted by the algorithm and how well it performed at estimating position. Mahony, SAAM and Tilt algorithms had best general position estimate performance.Com o recente surgimento de sistemas micro-eletromecânico amplamente acessíveis e precisos nos últimos anos, o rastreio de movimento através de sistemas de in erciais tornou-se omnipresente nos dias de hoje. Contrariamente à localização baseada no Sistema de Posicionamento Global (GPS), os Sistemas de Naveg ação Inercial (SNI) não são afetados intrinsecamente pela interferência de sinal, suscetibilidades de bloqueio e falsificação. As medições dos sensores inerciais também são adquiridas a elevadas taxas de amostragem e podem ser integradas numericamente para estimar os conhecimentos de posição e orientação. Estas medições são precisas numa escala de pequena dimensão, mas acumulam grad ualmente erros durante longos períodos. Combinar múltiplos sensores inerci ais num método conhecido como fusão de sensores permite produzir uma mais consistente e confiável compreensão do sistema, diminuindo erros acumulativos. Vários algoritmos de fusão de sensores ocorrem na literatura com o objetivo de estimar os Sistemas de Referência de Atitude e Rumo (SRAR) de um corpo rígido no que diz respeito a uma estrutura de referência. Este trabalho descreve o desenvolvimento e implementação de um sistema multiusos de baixo custo para estimativa de posição e orientação. Além disso, apresenta uma comparação experimental de uma série de soluções de fusão de sensores e compara o seu de sempenho na estimativa da posição de um objeto em movimento. Os resultados mostram uma correlação entre os sensores que são confiados pelo algoritmo e o quão bem ele desempenhou na posição estimada. Os algoritmos Mahony, SAAM e Tilt tiveram o melhor desempenho da estimativa da posição geral
