    Fast Lean Erasure-Coded Atomic Memory Object

    In this work, we propose FLECKS, an algorithm which implements atomic memory objects in a multi-writer multi-reader (MWMR) setting in asynchronous networks and server failures. FLECKS substantially reduces storage and communication costs over its replication-based counterparts by employing erasure-codes. FLECKS outperforms the previously proposed algorithms in terms of the metrics that to deliver good performance such as storage cost per object, communication cost a high fault-tolerance of clients and servers, guaranteed liveness of operation, and a given number of communication rounds per operation, etc. We provide proofs for liveness and atomicity properties of FLECKS and derive worst-case latency bounds for the operations. We implemented and deployed FLECKS in cloud-based clusters and demonstrate that FLECKS has substantially lower storage and bandwidth costs, and significantly lower latency of operations than the replication-based mechanisms

    Entangled Matters: Analogue Futures & Political Pasts

    Theorised as an "ontology of the output" my research project conceptually repurposes media machines in order to activate new or alternate entanglements between historical media artefacts and events. Although the particular circumstances that produced these materials may have changed, the project asks why these analogue media artefacts might still be a matter of concern. What is their relevance for problematizing debates within media philosophy today and by extension the politics that underscore the operations of the digital? Does the analogue as I intuit have the capacity to release history and propose alternate pathways through mediatic time? Case Studies: ARCHIVAL FUTURES considers the missing or 'silent' erasure of 18-'12 minutes in Watergate Tape No. 342 (1972). TELE-TRANSMISSIONS explores the 14-minute audio transmission produced by the Muirhead K220 Picture Transmitter to relay the image of napalm victim Kim Phuc from Saigon to Tokyo (June 8 1972). RADIOLOGICAL EVENTS examines thirty-three seconds of irradiated film shot at Chernobyl Reactor Unit 4 by the late Soviet filmmaker Vladimir Shevchenko (April 26 1986). This research turns upon a reconsideration of the ontological temporalities of media matter; a concern both in and with time which acknowledges that each of the now historic machinic artefacts and related case studies have always-already been entangled with the present and coming events of the future. The thesis project as such performs itself as a kind of "tape cutup" that reorganises and consequently troubles the historical record by bringing ostensibly unrelated events into creative juxtaposition with one another. Recording asserts temporality; it is the formal means by which time is engineered, how it is both retroactively repotentialised and prospectively activated. Recording in effect produces a saturated ontology of time in which the reverberations of past, present, and future elide to become enfolded within the temporal vectors of the artefact

    Re-visions of place in transnational literatures of the long nineties

    This dissertation argues that transnational literatures of the 1990s emphasize everyday place-making during a period when physical distance might be erased through new technologies and social identities might be understood diffuse and "groundless." Drawing on a range of cross-disciplinary scholarship on space and transnationality, this project maps the literary place-consciousness of the "long nineties" (1989-2001) by attending to each text's representation of the multiple histories and geographies of a given place and how characters' identities are shaped by them. Specifically, each author imagines real places marked by vertical, (post)colonial relationships and lateral, transnational ones in a transitional period of geopolitics neither overdetermined by Cold War factionalism nor circumscribed by a twenty-first century, Euro-American "war on terror." The resulting transformation of these places offers Nadine Gordimer and Salman Rushdie (chapters 1 and 2, respectively) opportunities to grapple with spatial legacies of British imperialism while forging new place-making practices. Gordimer's The Pickup suggests that a productive sense of place might be recovered by fleeing corrupt postcolonial space for a "pure," local space, while Rushdie's The Satanic Verses recognizes that coming to terms with postcolonial spatial politics means understanding space as underwritten by racial and sexual difference. In contrast to the post-imperialist legacies that haunt but do not dominate Gordimer and Rushdie's work, Karen Tei Yamashita's Tropic of Orange (chapter 3) and Joe Sacco's Palestine (chapter 4) suggest that colonialist spatial practices continue to have real, material effects in the 1990s. The former engages the intersection settler colonialist boundary-making and neocolonial boundary erasure located at the U.S.-Mexico border; the latter represents national narration as an act of claiming place, therevy resisting settler colonialist logics of elimination. While previous scholarship tended to focus on representations of hyper-mobility, placelessness, and deterritorialization, this dissertation ultimately seeks to re-introduce overlooked spatial-historical contexts of the "long nineties" into current scholarship in postcolonial and transnational literature studies. Such an approach generates new ways of understanding how authors attempt to reconcile sweeping, globalized flows of power with everyday spatial practice

    Biohacking and code convergence : a transductive ethnography

    Cette thĂšse se dĂ©ploie dans un espace de discours et de pratiques revendicatrices, Ă  l’inter- section des cultures amateures informatiques et biotechniques, euro-amĂ©ricaines contempo- raines. La problĂ©matique se dessinant dans ce croisement culturel examine des mĂ©taphores et analogies au coeur d’un traffic intense, au milieu de voies de commmunications imposantes, reliant les technologies informatiques et biotechniques comme lieux d’expression mĂ©diatique. L’examen retrace les lignes de force, les mĂ©diations expressives en ces lieux Ă  travers leurs manifestations en tant que codes —à la fois informatiques et gĂ©nĂ©tiques— et reconnaĂźt les caractĂšres analogiques d’expressivitĂ© des codes en tant que processus de convergence. Émergeant lentement, Ă  partir des annĂ©es 40 et 50, les visions convergentes des codes ont facilitĂ© l’entrĂ©e des ordinateurs personnels dans les marchĂ©s, ainsi que dans les garages de hackers, alors que des bricoleurs de l’informatique s’en rĂ©clamaient comme espace de libertĂ© d’information —et surtout d’innovation. Plus de cinquante ans plus tard, l’analogie entre codes informatiques et gĂ©nĂ©tiques sert de moteur aux revendications de libertĂ©, informant cette fois les nouvelles applications de la biotechnologie de marchĂ©, ainsi que l’activitĂ© des biohackers, ces bricoleurs de garage en biologie synthĂ©tique. Les pratiques du biohacking sont ainsi comprises comme des individuations : des tentatives continues de rĂ©soudre des frictions, des tensions travaillant les revendications des cultures amateures informatiques et biotechniques. Une des maniĂšres de moduler ces tensions s’incarne dans un processus connu sous le nom de forking, entrevu ici comme l’expĂ©rience d’une bifurcation. Autrement dit, le forking est ici dĂ©finit comme passage vers un seuil critique, dĂ©clinant la technologie et la biologie sur plusieurs modes. Le forking informe —c’est-Ă -dire permet et contraint— diffĂ©rentes vi- sions collectives de l’ouverture informationnelle. Le forking intervient aussi sur les plans des iii semio-matĂ©rialitĂ©s et pouvoirs d’action investis dans les pratiques biotechniques et informa- tiques. Pris comme processus de co-constitution et de diffĂ©rentiation de l’action collective, les mouvements de bifurcation invitent les trois questions suivantes : 1) Comment le forking catalyse-t-il la solution des tensions participant aux revendications des pratiques du bioha- cking ? 2) Dans ce processus de solution, de quelles maniĂšres les revendications changent de phase, bifurquent et se transforment, parfois au point d’altĂ©rer radicalement ces pratiques ? 3) Quels nouveaux problĂšmes Ă©mergent de ces solutions ? L’effort de recherche a trouvĂ© ces questions, ainsi que les plans correspondants d’action sĂ©mio-matĂ©rielle et collective, incarnĂ©es dans trois expĂ©riences ethnographiques rĂ©parties sur trois ans (2012-2015) : la premiĂšre dans un laboratoire de biotechnologie communautaire new- yorkais, la seconde dans l’émergence d’un groupe de biotechnologie amateure Ă  MontrĂ©al, et la troisiĂšme Ă  Cork, en Irlande, au sein du premier accĂ©lĂ©rateur d’entreprises en biologie synthĂ©tique au monde. La logique de l’enquĂȘte n’est ni strictement inductive ou dĂ©ductive, mais transductive. Elle emprunte Ă  la philosophie de la communication et de l’information de Gilbert Simondon et dĂ©couvre l’épistĂ©mologie en tant qu’acte de crĂ©ation opĂ©rant en milieux relationnels. L’heuristique transductive offre des rencontres inusitĂ©es entre les mĂ©taphores et les analogies des codes. Ces rencontres Ă©tonnantes ont amĂ©nagĂ© l’expĂ©rience de la conver- gence des codes sous forme de jeux d’écritures. Elles se sont retrouvĂ©es dans la recherche ethnographique en tant que processus transductifs.This dissertation examines creative practices and discourses intersecting computer and biotech cultures. It queries influential metaphors and analogies on both sides of the inter- section, and their positioning of biotech and information technologies as expression media. It follows mediations across their incarnations as codes, both computational and biological, and situates their analogical expressivity and programmability as a process of code conver- gence. Converging visions of technological freedom facilitated the entrance of computers in 1960’s Western hobbyist hacker circles, as well as in consumer markets. Almost fifty years later, the analogy drives claims to freedom of information —and freedom of innovation— from biohacker hobbyist groups to new biotech consumer markets. Such biohacking practices are understood as individuations: as ongoing attempts to resolve frictions, tensions working through claims to freedom and openness animating software and biotech cultures. Tensions get modulated in many ways. One of them, otherwise known as “forking,” refers here to a critical bifurcation allowing for differing iterations of biotechnical and computa- tional configurations. Forking informs —that is, simultaneously affords and constrains— differing collective visions of openness. Forking also operates on the materiality and agency invested in biotechnical and computational practices. Taken as a significant process of co- constitution and differentiation in collective action, bifurcation invites the following three questions: 1) How does forking solve tensions working through claims to biotech freedom? 2) In this solving process, how can claims bifurcate and transform to the point of radically altering biotech practices? 3) what new problems do these solutions call into existence? This research found these questions, and both scales of material action and agency, in- carnated in three extensive ethnographical journeys spanning three years (2012-2015): the first in a Brooklyn-based biotech community laboratory, the second in the early days of a biotech community group in Montreal, and the third in the world’s first synthetic biology startup accelerator in Cork, Ireland. The inquiry’s guiding empirical logic is neither solely deductive or inductive, but transductive. It borrows from Gilbert Simondon’s philosophy of communication and information to experience epistemology as an act of analogical creation involving the radical, irreversible transformation of knower and known. Transductive heuris- tics offer unconvential encounters with practices, metaphors and analogies of code. In the end, transductive methods acknowledge code convergence as a metastable writing games, and ethnographical research itself as a transductive process

    Toatie : functional hardware description with dependent types

    Describing correct circuits remains a tall order, despite four decades of evolution in Hardware Description Languages (HDLs). Many enticing circuit architectures require recursive structures or complex compile-time computation — two patterns that prove difficult to capture in traditional HDLs. In a signal processing context, the Fast FIR Algorithm (FFA) structure for efficient parallel filtering proves to be naturally recursive, and most Multiple Constant Multiplication (MCM) blocks decompose multiplications into graphs of simple shifts and adds using demanding compile time computation. Generalised versions of both remain mostly in academic folklore. The implementations which do exist are often ad hoc circuit generators, written in software languages. These pose challenges for verification and are resistant to composition. Embedded functional HDLs, that represent circuits as data, allow for these descriptions at the cost of forcing the designer to work at the gate-level. A promising alternative is to use a stand-alone compiler, representing circuits as plain functions, exemplified by the CλaSH HDL. This, however, raises new challenges in capturing a circuit’s staging — which expressions in the single language should be reduced during compile-time elaboration, and which should remain in the circuit’s run-time? To better reflect the physical separation between circuit phases, this work proposes a new functional HDL (representing circuits as functions) with first-class staging constructs. Orthogonal to this, there are also long-standing challenges in the verification of parameterised circuit families. Industry surveys have consistently reported that only a slim minority of FPGA projects reach production without non-trivial bugs. While a healthy growth in the adoption of automatic formal methods is also reported, the majority of testing remains dynamic — presenting difficulties for testing entire circuit families at once. This research offers an alternative verification methodology via the combination of dependent types and automatic synthesis of user-defined data types. Given precise enough types for synthesisable data, this environment can be used to develop circuit families with full functional verification in a correct-by-construction fashion. This approach allows for verification of entire circuit families (not just one concrete member) and side-steps the state-space explosion of model checking methods. Beyond the existing work, this research offers synthesis of combinatorial circuits — not just a software model of their behaviour. This additional step requires careful consideration of staging, erasure & irrelevance, deriving bit representations of user-defined data types, and a new synthesis scheme.     Raping the raced body: Trauma in Asian North American women\u27s literature

    This dissertation examines the representation of racial and sexual traumas in short fiction and novels by Asian American women writing post-WWII to the present. The central focus of this project is on Asian American literary representations of the lingering effects of physical, racial, and sexual traumas to Asian American women, specifically the nuances of narrating traumatic experiences. Each chapter explores various literary representations of post-traumatic psychological states of unrest, instability, and incoherence. Most importantly, this study examines the frequently simultaneous narrations of sexual trauma and racial awareness, of how personal narratives of trauma against the physical body become entangled with narratives about racial awareness, social status, and political identity. Through analysis of Hisaye Yamamoto\u27s The High-heeled Shoes: A Memoir, and The Legend of Miss Sasagawara, Joy Kogawa\u27s Obasan and The Rain Ascends, Lois-Ann Yamanaka\u27s Behold the Many, and Patricia Chao\u27s Monkey King, I examine a common trope within Asian American literature: the simultaneous narration of racial and sexual traumas

    Reimagining the Postcolonial Cold War in Southeast Asia: Juxtaposing the Writing of Pramoedya Ananta Toer, Francisco Sionil José, Sadako Kurihara, and Ee Tiang Hong

    The Postcolonial Cold War, a composite term proposed by Heonik Kwon, captures the situation in Southeast Asia of the period subsequent to the Second World War. It encompasses the experience of ideological struggle and the search for an identity in various contexts in the region. Two literary forms - the poem and the novel - are explored in this thesis as evidence that informs a reimagining. This critical reimagination proposes four dominant structuring features of the era. These features are expressed through the four literary works examined in this thesis, but also through the experiences that shaped these works and their authors. These experiences are ‘Exile’, ‘Continuity’, ‘Death World’ and ‘Nostalgia’. These structuring features are integral to the literature of the Postcolonial Cold War in Southeast Asia and can be extrapolated to thematize the experience of conflict in the region. Buttressing this argument, the thesis explores how the scholarly fields of the Cold War and postcolonial studies can be placed in conversation with each other, proving that this conjunction is especially suited to Southeast Asia. This thesis works with literary texts produced both between and outside of the dates understood by scholars to denote the Cold War. This ‘decomposes’ traditional political boundaries, and links Kwon’s formulation to the broader postcolonial project. The thesis also explores and links Cold War literary readings to a search for postcolonial identity. The texts and experiences of Pramoedya Ananta Toer, F. Sionil JosĂ©, Sadako Kurihara and Ee Tiang Hong, along with those of Eka Kurniawan, Jeremy Tiang, and Ninochka Rosca, reveal that the Cold War in Southeast Asia cannot be examined without a conversation about the colonial experience and decolonization. In this way, the thesis demonstrates that the past is always present in selected texts. Through novels and poems from Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan and Malaysia, along with an evaluation of retrospective contemporary literature, the thesis seeks to question the stability of the category of region, including Japan in the imaginary frame of Southeast Asia. Poetry proves conducive as a mode to communicate slippages in Cold War temporality and to voice trauma, and the novel allows us to read at once alongside and against the grain of the independent Southeast Asian nation state

    Excavating the Future

    Well-known in science fiction for tomb-raiding and mummy-wrangling, the archaeologist has been a rich source for imagining ‘strange new worlds’ from ‘strange old worlds.’ But more than a well-spring for SF scenarios, the genre’s archaeological imaginary invites us to consider the ideological implications of digging up the past buried in the future. A cultural study of an array of very popular, though often critically-neglected, North American SF film and television texts–running the gamut of telefilms, pseudo-documentaries, teen serial drama and Hollywood blockbusters–Excavating the Future explores the popular archaeological imagination and the political uses to which it is being employed by the U.S. state and its adversaries. By treating SF texts as documents of archaeological experience circulating within and between scientific and popular culture communities and media, Excavating the Future develops critical strategies for analyzing SF film and television’s critical and adaptive responses to post 9/11 geopolitical concerns about the war on terror, homeland security, the invasion and reconstruction of Iraq, and the ongoing fight against ISIS
