    Which One is Me?: Identifying Oneself on Public Displays

    While user representations are extensively used on public displays, it remains unclear how well users can recognize their own representation among those of surrounding users. We study the most widely used representations: abstract objects, skeletons, silhouettes and mirrors. In a prestudy (N=12), we identify five strategies that users follow to recognize themselves on public displays. In a second study (N=19), we quantify the users' recognition time and accuracy with respect to each representation type. Our findings suggest that there is a significant effect of (1) the representation type, (2) the strategies performed by users, and (3) the combination of both on recognition time and accuracy. We discuss the suitability of each representation for different settings and provide specific recommendations as to how user representations should be applied in multi-user scenarios. These recommendations guide practitioners and researchers in selecting the representation that optimizes the most for the deployment's requirements, and for the user strategies that are feasible in that environment

    Self-Supervised Gait Encoding with Locality-Aware Attention for Person Re-Identification

    Gait-based person re-identification (Re-ID) is valuable for safety-critical applications, and using only 3D skeleton data to extract discriminative gait features for person Re-ID is an emerging open topic. Existing methods either adopt hand-crafted features or learn gait features by traditional supervised learning paradigms. Unlike previous methods, we for the first time propose a generic gait encoding approach that can utilize unlabeled skeleton data to learn gait representations in a self-supervised manner. Specifically, we first propose to introduce self-supervision by learning to reconstruct input skeleton sequences in reverse order, which facilitates learning richer high-level semantics and better gait representations. Second, inspired by the fact that motion's continuity endows temporally adjacent skeletons with higher correlations ("locality"), we propose a locality-aware attention mechanism that encourages learning larger attention weights for temporally adjacent skeletons when reconstructing current skeleton, so as to learn locality when encoding gait. Finally, we propose Attention-based Gait Encodings (AGEs), which are built using context vectors learned by locality-aware attention, as final gait representations. AGEs are directly utilized to realize effective person Re-ID. Our approach typically improves existing skeleton-based methods by 10-20% Rank-1 accuracy, and it achieves comparable or even superior performance to multi-modal methods with extra RGB or depth information.     Radar and RGB-depth sensors for fall detection: a review

    This paper reviews recent works in the literature on the use of systems based on radar and RGB-Depth (RGB-D) sensors for fall detection, and discusses outstanding research challenges and trends related to this research field. Systems to detect reliably fall events and promptly alert carers and first responders have gained significant interest in the past few years in order to address the societal issue of an increasing number of elderly people living alone, with the associated risk of them falling and the consequences in terms of health treatments, reduced well-being, and costs. The interest in radar and RGB-D sensors is related to their capability to enable contactless and non-intrusive monitoring, which is an advantage for practical deployment and users’ acceptance and compliance, compared with other sensor technologies, such as video-cameras, or wearables. Furthermore, the possibility of combining and fusing information from The heterogeneous types of sensors is expected to improve the overall performance of practical fall detection systems.     An Evaluation Framework and Database for MoCap-Based Gait Recognition Methods

    As a contribution to reproducible research, this paper presents a framework and a database to improve the development, evaluation and comparison of methods for gait recognition from Motion Capture (MoCap) data. The evaluation framework provides implementation details and source codes of state-of-the-art human-interpretable geometric features as well as our own approaches where gait features are learned by a modification of Fisher's Linear Discriminant Analysis with the Maximum Margin Criterion, and by a combination of Principal Component Analysis and Linear Discriminant Analysis. It includes a description and source codes of a mechanism for evaluating four class separability coefficients of feature space and four rank-based classifier performance metrics. This framework also contains a tool for learning a custom classifier and for classifying a custom query on a custom gallery. We provide an experimental database along with source codes for its extraction from the general CMU MoCap database

    Continuous Human Activity Tracking over a Large Area with Multiple Kinect Sensors

    In recent years, researchers had been inquisitive about the use of technology to enhance the healthcare and wellness of patients with dementia. Dementia symptoms are associated with the decline in thinking skills and memory severe enough to reduce a person’s ability to pay attention and perform daily activities. Progression of dementia can be assessed by monitoring the daily activities of the patients. This thesis encompasses continuous localization and behavioral analysis of patient’s motion pattern over a wide area indoor living space using multiple calibrated Kinect sensors connected over the network. The skeleton data from all the sensor is transferred to the host computer via TCP sockets into Unity software where it is integrated into a single world coordinate system using calibration technique. Multiple cameras are placed with some overlap in the field of view for the successful calibration of the cameras and continuous tracking of the patients. Localization and behavioral data are stored in a CSV file for further analysis

    Walker-Independent Features for Gait Recognition from Motion Capture Data

    MoCap-based human identification, as a pattern recognition discipline, can be optimized using a machine learning approach. Yet in some applications such as video surveillance new identities can appear on the fly and labeled data for all encountered people may not always be available. This work introduces the concept of learning walker-independent gait features directly from raw joint coordinates by a modification of the Fisher’s Linear Discriminant Analysis with Maximum Margin Criterion. Our new approach shows not only that these features can discriminate different people than who they are learned on, but also that the number of learning identities can be much smaller than the number of walkers encountered in the real operation
