    Route Planning in Transportation Networks

    We survey recent advances in algorithms for route planning in transportation networks. For road networks, we show that one can compute driving directions in milliseconds or less even at continental scale. A variety of techniques provide different trade-offs between preprocessing effort, space requirements, and query time. Some algorithms can answer queries in a fraction of a microsecond, while others can deal efficiently with real-time traffic. Journey planning on public transportation systems, although conceptually similar, is a significantly harder problem due to its inherent time-dependent and multicriteria nature. Although exact algorithms are fast enough for interactive queries on metropolitan transit systems, dealing with continent-sized instances requires simplifications or heavy preprocessing. The multimodal route planning problem, which seeks journeys combining schedule-based transportation (buses, trains) with unrestricted modes (walking, driving), is even harder, relying on approximate solutions even for metropolitan inputs.Comment: This is an updated version of the technical report MSR-TR-2014-4, previously published by Microsoft Research.     A fast and tight heuristic for A∗ in road networks

    We study exact, efficient and practical algorithms for route planning in large road networks. Routing applications often require integrating the current traffic situation, planning ahead with traffic predictions for the future, respecting forbidden turns, and many other features depending on the exact application. While Dijkstra’s algorithm can be used to solve these problems, it is too slow for many applications. A* is a classical approach to accelerate Dijkstra’s algorithm. A* can support many extended scenarios without much additional implementation complexity. However, A*’s performance depends on the availability of a good heuristic that estimates distances. Computing tight distance estimates is a challenge on its own. On road networks, shortest paths can also be quickly computed using hierarchical speedup techniques. They achieve speed and exactness but sacrifice A*’s flexibility. Extending them to certain practical applications can be hard. In this paper, we present an algorithm to efficiently extract distance estimates for A* from Contraction Hierarchies (CH), a hierarchical technique. We call our heuristic CH-Potentials. Our approach allows decoupling the supported extensions from the hierarchical speed-up technique. Additionally, we describe A* optimizations to accelerate the processing of low degree nodes, which often occur in road networks

    Algorithms for Landmark Hub Labeling

    Landmark-based routing and Hub Labeling (HL) are shortest path planning techniques, both of which rely on storing shortest path distances between selected pairs of nodes in a preprocessing phase to accelerate query answering. In Landmark-based routing, stored distances to landmark nodes are used to obtain distance lower bounds that guide A* search from node s to node t. With HL, tight upper bounds for shortest path distances between any s-t-pair can be interfered from their stored node labels, making HL an efficient distance oracle. However, for shortest path retrieval, the oracle has to be called once per edge in said path. Furthermore, HL often suffers from a large space consumption as many node pair distances have to be stored in the labels to allow for correct query answering. In this paper, we propose a novel technique, called Landmark Hub Labeling (LHL), which integrates the landmark concept into HL. We prove better worst-case path retrieval times for LHL in case it is path-consistent (a new labeling property we introduce). Moreover, we design efficient (approximation) algorithms that produce path-consistent LHL with small label size and provide parametrized upper bounds, depending on the highway dimension h or the geodesic transversal number gt of the graph. Finally, we show that the space consumption of LHL is smaller than that of (hierarchical) HL, both in theory and in experiments on real-world road networks

    Using Incremental Many-to-One Queries to Build a Fast and Tight Heuristic for A* in Road Networks

    We study exact, efficient, and practical algorithms for route planning applications in large road networks. On the one hand, such algorithms should be able to answer shortest path queries within milliseconds. On the other hand, routing applications often require integrating the current traffic situation, planning ahead with predictions for future traffic, respecting forbidden turns, and many other features depending on the specific application. Therefore, such algorithms must be flexible and able to support a variety of problem variants. In this work, we revisit the A* algorithm to build a simple, extensible, and unified algorithmic framework applicable to many route planning problems. A* has been previously used for routing in road networks. However, its performance was not competitive because no sufficiently fast and tight distance estimation function was available. We present a novel, efficient, and accurate A* heuristic using Contraction Hierarchies, another popular speedup technique. The core of our heuristic is a new Contraction Hierarchies query algorithm called Lazy RPHAST, which can efficiently compute shortest distances from many incrementally provided sources toward a common target. Additionally, we describe A* optimizations to accelerate the processing of low-degree vertices, which are typical in road networks, and present a new pruning criterion for symmetrical bidirectional A*. An extensive experimental study confirms the practicality of our approach for many applications

    Engineering Algorithms for Dynamic and Time-Dependent Route Planning

    Efficiently computing shortest paths is an essential building block of many mobility applications, most prominently route planning/navigation devices and applications. In this thesis, we apply the algorithm engineering methodology to design algorithms for route planning in dynamic (for example, considering real-time traffic) and time-dependent (for example, considering traffic predictions) problem settings. We build on and extend the popular Contraction Hierarchies (CH) speedup technique. With a few minutes of preprocessing, CH can optimally answer shortest path queries on continental-sized road networks with tens of millions of vertices and edges in less than a millisecond, i.e. around four orders of magnitude faster than Dijkstra’s algorithm. CH already has been extended to dynamic and time-dependent problem settings. However, these adaptations suffer from limitations. For example, the time-dependent variant of CH exhibits prohibitive memory consumption on large road networks with detailed traffic predictions. This thesis contains the following key contributions: First, we introduce CH-Potentials, an A*-based routing framework. CH-Potentials computes optimal distance estimates for A* using CH with a lower bound weight function derived at preprocessing time. The framework can be applied to any routing problem where appropriate lower bounds can be obtained. The achieved speedups range between one and three orders of magnitude over Dijkstra’s algorithm, depending on how tight the lower bounds are. Second, we propose several improvements to Customizable Contraction Hierarchies (CCH), the CH adaptation for dynamic route planning. Our improvements yield speedups of up to an order of magnitude. Further, we augment CCH to efficiently support essential extensions such as turn costs, alternative route computation and point-of-interest queries. Third, we present the first space-efficient, fast and exact speedup technique for time-dependent routing. Compared to the previous time-dependent variant of CH, our technique requires up to 40 times less memory, needs at most a third of the preprocessing time, and achieves only marginally slower query running times. Fourth, we generalize A* and introduce time-dependent A* potentials. This allows us to design the first approach for routing with combined live and predicted traffic, which achieves interactive running times for exact queries while allowing live traffic updates in a fraction of a minute. Fifth, we study extended problem models for routing with imperfect data and routing for truck drivers and present efficient algorithms for these variants. Sixth and finally, we present various complexity results for non-FIFO time-dependent routing and the extended problem models

    Revisiting Radius, Diameter, and all Eccentricity Computation in Graphs through Certificates

    We introduce notions of certificates allowing to bound eccentricities in a graph. In particular , we revisit radius (minimum eccentricity) and diameter (maximum eccentricity) computation and explain the efficiency of practical radius and diameter algorithms by the existence of small certificates for radius and diameter plus few additional properties. We show how such computation is related to covering a graph with certain balls or complementary of balls. We introduce several new algorithmic techniques related to eccentricity computation and propose algorithms for radius, diameter and all eccentricities with theoretical guarantees with respect to certain graph parameters. This is complemented by experimental results on various real-world graphs showing that these parameters appear to be low in practice. We also obtain refined results in the case where the input graph has low doubling dimension, has low hyperbolicity, or is chordal

    Arc Routing with Time-Dependent Travel Times and Paths

    Vehicle routing algorithms usually reformulate the road network into a complete graph in which each arc represents the shortest path between two locations. Studies on time-dependent routing followed this model and therefore defined the speed functions on the complete graph. We argue that this model is often inadequate, in particular for arc routing problems involving services on edges of a road network. To fill this gap, we formally define the time-dependent capacitated arc routing problem (TDCARP), with travel and service speed functions given directly at the network level. Under these assumptions, the quickest path between locations can change over time, leading to a complex problem that challenges the capabilities of current solution methods. We introduce effective algorithms for preprocessing quickest paths in a closed form, efficient data structures for travel time queries during routing optimization, as well as heuristic and exact solution approaches for the TDCARP. Our heuristic uses the hybrid genetic search principle with tailored solution-decoding algorithms and lower bounds for filtering moves. Our branch-and-price algorithm exploits dedicated pricing routines, heuristic dominance rules and completion bounds to find optimal solutions for problem counting up to 75 services. Based on these algorithms, we measure the benefits of time-dependent routing optimization for different levels of travel-speed data accuracy
