Survey on model-based manipulation planning of deformable objects
A systematic overview on the subject of model-based manipulation planning of deformable objects is presented. Existing modelling techniques of volumetric, planar and linear deformable objects are described, emphasizing the different types of deformation. Planning strategies are categorized according to the type of manipulation goal: path planning, folding/unfolding, topology modifications and assembly. Most current contributions fit naturally into these categories, and thus the presented algorithms constitute an adequate basis for future developments.Preprin
A frame for a computer aided inspection planning system
Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) inspection planning is an activity performed by well-trained operators, but
different measurement techniques, using the same data analysis algorithms yield in different measurement results. This
is a well-recognized source of uncertainty in coordinate measurement. A CMM, provided with an automatic inspection
planning (CAIP) system, permits to implement more accurate and efficient operating procedures and to fit higher
quality assurance standards and tighter production timings.
In this paper we present a frame of a CAIP system, able to deal with almost all the decisional stages of CMM inspection.
Moreover, original approaches have been developed and presented in inspection feature selection, part set -up, probe
configuration, and path planning
Automated sequence and motion planning for robotic spatial extrusion of 3D trusses
While robotic spatial extrusion has demonstrated a new and efficient means to
fabricate 3D truss structures in architectural scale, a major challenge remains
in automatically planning extrusion sequence and robotic motion for trusses
with unconstrained topologies. This paper presents the first attempt in the
field to rigorously formulate the extrusion sequence and motion planning (SAMP)
problem, using a CSP encoding. Furthermore, this research proposes a new
hierarchical planning framework to solve the extrusion SAMP problems that
usually have a long planning horizon and 3D configuration complexity. By
decoupling sequence and motion planning, the planning framework is able to
efficiently solve the extrusion sequence, end-effector poses, joint
configurations, and transition trajectories for spatial trusses with
nonstandard topologies. This paper also presents the first detailed computation
data to reveal the runtime bottleneck on solving SAMP problems, which provides
insight and comparing baseline for future algorithmic development. Together
with the algorithmic results, this paper also presents an open-source and
modularized software implementation called Choreo that is machine-agnostic. To
demonstrate the power of this algorithmic framework, three case studies,
including real fabrication and simulation results, are presented.Comment: 24 pages, 16 figure
Human Motion Trajectory Prediction: A Survey
With growing numbers of intelligent autonomous systems in human environments,
the ability of such systems to perceive, understand and anticipate human
behavior becomes increasingly important. Specifically, predicting future
positions of dynamic agents and planning considering such predictions are key
tasks for self-driving vehicles, service robots and advanced surveillance
systems. This paper provides a survey of human motion trajectory prediction. We
review, analyze and structure a large selection of work from different
communities and propose a taxonomy that categorizes existing methods based on
the motion modeling approach and level of contextual information used. We
provide an overview of the existing datasets and performance metrics. We
discuss limitations of the state of the art and outline directions for further
research.Comment: Submitted to the International Journal of Robotics Research (IJRR),

A Minimalist Approach to Type-Agnostic Detection of Quadrics in Point Clouds
This paper proposes a segmentation-free, automatic and efficient procedure to
detect general geometric quadric forms in point clouds, where clutter and
occlusions are inevitable. Our everyday world is dominated by man-made objects
which are designed using 3D primitives (such as planes, cones, spheres,
cylinders, etc.). These objects are also omnipresent in industrial
environments. This gives rise to the possibility of abstracting 3D scenes
through primitives, thereby positions these geometric forms as an integral part
of perception and high level 3D scene understanding.
As opposed to state-of-the-art, where a tailored algorithm treats each
primitive type separately, we propose to encapsulate all types in a single
robust detection procedure. At the center of our approach lies a closed form 3D
quadric fit, operating in both primal & dual spaces and requiring as low as 4
oriented-points. Around this fit, we design a novel, local null-space voting
strategy to reduce the 4-point case to 3. Voting is coupled with the famous
RANSAC and makes our algorithm orders of magnitude faster than its conventional
counterparts. This is the first method capable of performing a generic
cross-type multi-object primitive detection in difficult scenes. Results on
synthetic and real datasets support the validity of our method.Comment: Accepted for publication at CVPR 201
Sim2Real Neural Controllers for Physics-based Robotic Deployment of Deformable Linear Objects
Deformable linear objects (DLOs), such as rods, cables, and ropes, play
important roles in daily life. However, manipulation of DLOs is challenging as
large geometrically nonlinear deformations may occur during the manipulation
process. This problem is made even more difficult as the different deformation
modes (e.g., stretching, bending, and twisting) may result in elastic
instabilities during manipulation. In this paper, we formulate a physics-guided
data-driven method to solve a challenging manipulation task -- accurately
deploying a DLO (an elastic rod) onto a rigid substrate along various
prescribed patterns. Our framework combines machine learning, scaling analysis,
and physical simulations to develop a physics-based neural controller for
deployment. We explore the complex interplay between the gravitational and
elastic energies of the manipulated DLO and obtain a control method for DLO
deployment that is robust against friction and material properties. Out of the
numerous geometrical and material properties of the rod and substrate, we show
that only three non-dimensional parameters are needed to describe the
deployment process with physical analysis. Therefore, the essence of the
controlling law for the manipulation task can be constructed with a
low-dimensional model, drastically increasing the computation speed. The
effectiveness of our optimal control scheme is shown through a comprehensive
robotic case study comparing against a heuristic control method for deploying
rods for a wide variety of patterns. In addition to this, we also showcase the
practicality of our control scheme by having a robot accomplish challenging
high-level tasks such as mimicking human handwriting, cable placement, and
tying knots.Comment: YouTube video: https://youtu.be/OSD6dhOgyMA?feature=share
Intelligent manipulation technique for multi-branch robotic systems
New analytical development in kinematics planning is reported. The INtelligent KInematics Planner (INKIP) consists of the kinematics spline theory and the adaptive logic annealing process. Also, a novel framework of robot learning mechanism is introduced. The FUzzy LOgic Self Organized Neural Networks (FULOSONN) integrates fuzzy logic in commands, control, searching, and reasoning, the embedded expert system for nominal robotics knowledge implementation, and the self organized neural networks for the dynamic knowledge evolutionary process. Progress on the mechanical construction of SRA Advanced Robotic System (SRAARS) and the real time robot vision system is also reported. A decision was made to incorporate the Local Area Network (LAN) technology in the overall communication system

Real-Time Planning with Primitives for Dynamic Walking over Uneven Terrain
We present an algorithm for receding-horizon motion planning using a finite
family of motion primitives for underactuated dynamic walking over uneven
terrain. The motion primitives are defined as virtual holonomic constraints,
and the special structure of underactuated mechanical systems operating subject
to virtual constraints is used to construct closed-form solutions and a special
binary search tree that dramatically speed up motion planning. We propose a
greedy depth-first search and discuss improvement using energy-based
heuristics. The resulting algorithm can plan several footsteps ahead in a
fraction of a second for both the compass-gait walker and a planar
7-Degree-of-freedom/five-link walker.Comment: Conference submissio
