Fast construction of irreducible polynomials over finite fields

International audienceWe present a randomized algorithm that on input a finite field KK with qq elements and a positive integer dd outputs a degree dd irreducible polynomial in K[x]K[x]. The running time is d1+o(1)×(log⁡q)5+o(1)d^{1+o(1)} \times (\log q)^{5+o(1)} elementary operations. The o(1)o(1) in d1+o(1)d^{1+o(1)} is a function of dd that tends to zero when dd tends to infinity. And the o(1)o(1) in (log⁡q)5+o(1)(\log q)^{5+o(1)} is a function of qq that tends to zero when qq tends to infinity. In particular, the complexity is quasi-linear in the degree dd

Irreducible compositions of degree two polynomials over finite fields have regular structure

Let qq be an odd prime power and DD be the set of monic irreducible polynomials in Fq[x]\mathbb F_q[x] which can be written as a composition of monic degree two polynomials. In this paper we prove that DD has a natural regular structure by showing that there exists a finite automaton having DD as accepted language. Our method is constructive.Comment: To appear in The Quarterly Journal of Mathematic

Efficient linear feedback shift registers with maximal period

We introduce and analyze an efficient family of linear feedback shift registers (LFSR's) with maximal period. This family is word-oriented and is suitable for implementation in software, thus provides a solution to a recent challenge posed in FSE '94. The classical theory of LFSR's is extended to provide efficient algorithms for generation of irreducible and primitive LFSR's of this new type
