Sub-Riemannian Fast Marching in SE(2)
We propose a Fast Marching based implementation for computing sub-Riemanninan
(SR) geodesics in the roto-translation group SE(2), with a metric depending on
a cost induced by the image data. The key ingredient is a Riemannian
approximation of the SR-metric. Then, a state of the art Fast Marching solver
that is able to deal with extreme anisotropies is used to compute a SR-distance
map as the solution of a corresponding eikonal equation. Subsequent
backtracking on the distance map gives the geodesics. To validate the method,
we consider the uniform cost case in which exact formulas for SR-geodesics are
known and we show remarkable accuracy of the numerically computed SR-spheres.
We also show a dramatic decrease in computational time with respect to a
previous PDE-based iterative approach. Regarding image analysis applications,
we show the potential of considering these data adaptive geodesics for a fully
automated retinal vessel tree segmentation.Comment: CIARP 201
A solenoidal electron spectrometer for a precision measurement of the neutron -asymmetry with ultracold neutrons
We describe an electron spectrometer designed for a precision measurement of
the neutron -asymmetry with spin-polarized ultracold neutrons. The
spectrometer consists of a 1.0-Tesla solenoidal field with two identical
multiwire proportional chamber and plastic scintillator electron detector
packages situated within 0.6-Tesla field-expansion regions. Select results from
performance studies of the spectrometer with calibration sources are reported.Comment: 30 pages, 19 figures, 1 table, submitted to NIM
A graph-based mathematical morphology reader
This survey paper aims at providing a "literary" anthology of mathematical
morphology on graphs. It describes in the English language many ideas stemming
from a large number of different papers, hence providing a unified view of an
active and diverse field of research
Vessel Axis Tracking Using Topology Constrained Surface Evolution
An approach to three-dimensional vessel axis tracking based on surface evolution is presented. The main idea is to guide the evolution of the surface by analyzing its skeleton topology during evolution, and imposing shape constraints on the topology. For example, the intermediate topology can be processed such that it represents a single vessel segment, a bifurcation, or a more complex vascular topology. The evolving surface is then re-initialized with the newly found topology. Re-initialization is a crucial step since it creates probing behavior of the evolving front, encourages the segmentation process to extract the vascular structure of interest and reduces the risk on leaking of the curve into the background. The method was evaluated in two computed tomography angiography applications: (i) extracting the internal carotid arteries including the region in which they traverse through the skull base, which is challenging due to the proximity of bone structures and overlap in intensity values, and (ii) extracting the carotid bifurcations including many cases in which they are severely stenosed and contain calcifications. The vessel axis was found in 90% (18/20 internal carotids in ten patients) and 70% (14/20 carotid bifurcations in a different set of ten patients) of the cases
Gap Processing for Adaptive Maximal Poisson-Disk Sampling
In this paper, we study the generation of maximal Poisson-disk sets with
varying radii. First, we present a geometric analysis of gaps in such disk
sets. This analysis is the basis for maximal and adaptive sampling in Euclidean
space and on manifolds. Second, we propose efficient algorithms and data
structures to detect gaps and update gaps when disks are inserted, deleted,
moved, or have their radius changed. We build on the concepts of the regular
triangulation and the power diagram. Third, we will show how our analysis can
make a contribution to the state-of-the-art in surface remeshing.Comment: 16 pages. ACM Transactions on Graphics, 201
