    A statistical learning based approach for parameter fine-tuning of metaheuristics

    Metaheuristics are approximation methods used to solve combinatorial optimization problems. Their performance usually depends on a set of parameters that need to be adjusted. The selection of appropriate parameter values causes a loss of efficiency, as it requires time, and advanced analytical and problem-specific skills. This paper provides an overview of the principal approaches to tackle the Parameter Setting Problem, focusing on the statistical procedures employed so far by the scientific community.     We derive approximations for the service levels of two-echelon inventory systems with lost sales and Poisson demand. Our method is simple and accurate for a very broad range of problem instances, including cases with both high and low service levels. In contrast, existing methods only perform well for limited problem settings, or under restrictive assumptions.\u

    Two-echelon freight transport optimisation: unifying concepts via a systematic review

    Multi-echelon distribution schemes are one of the most common strategies adopted by the transport companies in an aim of cost reduction, but their identification in scientific literature is not always easy due to a lack of unification. This paper presents the main concepts of two-echelon distribution via a systematic review, in the specific a meta-narrative analysis, in order to identify and unify the main concepts, issues and methods that can be helpful for scientists and transport practitioners. The problem of system cost optimisation in two-echelon freight transport systems is defined. Moreover, the main variants are synthetically presented and discussed.     Time and multiple objectives in scheduling and routing problems

    Many optimization problems encountered in practice are multi-objective by nature, i.e., different objectives are conflicting and equally important. Many times, it is not desirable to drop some of them or to optimize them in a composite single objective or hierarchical manner. Furthermore, cost parameters change over time which makes optimization problems harder. For instance, in the transport sector, travel costs are a function of travel time which changes depending on the time of the day a vehicle is travelling (e.g., due to road congestion). Road congestion results in tremendous delays which lead to a decrease in the service quality and the responsiveness of logistic service providers. In Chapter 2, we develop a generic approach to deal with Multi-Objective Scheduling Problems (MOSPs) with State-Dependent Cost Parameters. The aim is to determine the set of Pareto solutions that capture the trade offs between the different conflicting objectives. Due to the complexity of MOSPs, an efficient approximation based on dynamic programming is developed. The approximation has a provable worse case performance guarantee. Even though the generated approximate Pareto front consist of fewer solutions, it still represents a good coverage of the true Pareto front. Furthermore, considerable gains in computation times are achieved. In Chapter 3, the developed methodology is validated on the multi-objective timedependent knapsack problem. In the classical knapsack problem, the input consists of a knapsack with a finite capacity and a set of items, each with a certain weight and a cost. A feasible solution to the knapsack problem is a selection of items such that their total weight does not exceed the knapsack capacity. The goal is to maximize the single objective function consisting of the total pro t of the selected items. We extend the classical knapsack problem in two ways.     A study on exponential-size neighborhoods for the bin packing problem with conflicts

    We propose an iterated local search based on several classes of local and large neighborhoods for the bin packing problem with conflicts. This problem, which combines the characteristics of both bin packing and vertex coloring, arises in various application contexts such as logistics and transportation, timetabling, and resource allocation for cloud computing. We introduce O(1)O(1) evaluation procedures for classical local-search moves, polynomial variants of ejection chains and assignment neighborhoods, an adaptive set covering-based neighborhood, and finally a controlled use of 0-cost moves to further diversify the search. The overall method produces solutions of good quality on the classical benchmark instances and scales very well with an increase of problem size. Extensive computational experiments are conducted to measure the respective contribution of each proposed neighborhood. In particular, the 0-cost moves and the large neighborhood based on set covering contribute very significantly to the search. Several research perspectives are open in relation to possible hybridizations with other state-of-the-art mathematical programming heuristics for this problem.Comment: 26 pages, 8 figure

    Opportunity costs calculation in agent-based vehicle routing and scheduling

    In this paper we consider a real-time, dynamic pickup and delivery problem with timewindows where orders should be assigned to one of a set of competing transportation companies. Our approach decomposes the problem into a multi-agent structure where vehicle agents are responsible for the routing and scheduling decisions and the assignment of orders to vehicles is done by using a second-price auction. Therefore the system performance will be heavily dependent on the pricing strategy of the vehicle agents. We propose a pricing strategy for vehicle agents based on dynamic programming where not only the direct cost of a job insertion is taken into account, but also its impact on future opportunities. We also propose a waiting strategy based on the same opportunity valuation. Simulation is used to evaluate the benefit of pricing opportunities compared to simple pricing strategies in different market settings. Numerical results show that the proposed approach provides high quality solutions, in terms of profits, capacity utilization and delivery reliability
