3D Visualisation - An Application and Assessment for Computer Network Traffic Analysis
The intent of this research is to develop and assess the application of 3D data visualisation to the field of computer security. The growth of available data relating to computer networks necessitates a more efficient and effective way of presenting information to analysts in support of decision making and situational awareness. Advances in computer hardware and display software have made more complex and interactive presentation of data in 3D possible.
While many attempts at creation of data-rich 3D displays have been made in the field of computer security, they have not become the tool of choice in the industry. There is also a limited amount of published research in the assessment of these tools in comparison to 2D graphical and tabular approaches to displaying the same data.
This research was conducted through creation of a novel abstraction framework for visualisation of computer network data, the Visual Interactive Network Analysis Framework (VINAF). This framework was implemented in software and the software prototype was assessed using both a procedural approach applied to a published forensics challenge and also through a human participant based experiment.
The key contributions to the fields of computer security and data visualisation made by this research include the creation of a novel abstraction framework for computer network traffic which features several new visualisation approaches. An implementation of this software was developed for the specific cybersecurity related task of computer network traffic analysis and published under an open source license to the cybersecurity community. The research contributes a novel approach to human-based experimentation developed during the COVID-19 pandemic and also implemented a novel procedure-based testing approach to the assessment of the prototype data visualisation tool.
Results of the research showed, through procedural experimentation, that the abstraction framework is effective for network forensics tasks and exhibited several advantages when compared to alternate approaches. The user participation experiment indicated that most of the participants deemed the abstraction framework to be effective in several task related to computer network traffic analysis. There was not a strong indication that it would be preferred over existing approaches utilised by the participants, however, it would likely be used to augment existing methods
Economic and Social Consequences of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Energy Sector
The purpose of the Special Issue was to collect the results of research and experience on the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic for the energy sector and the energy market, broadly understood, that were visible after a year. In particular, the impact of COVID-19 on the energy sector in the EU, including Poland, and the US was examined. The topics concerned various issues, e.g., the situation of energy companies, including those listed on the stock exchange, mining companies, and those dealing with renewable energy. The topics related to the development of electromobility, managerial competences, energy expenditure of local government units, sustainable development of energy, and energy poverty during a pandemic were also discussed
The web-based simulation and information service for multi-hazard impact chains. Design document.
The overall objective of the PARATUS project and the platform is the co-development of a web-based simulation and information service for first and second responders and other stakeholders to evaluate the impact chains of multi-hazard events with particular emphasis on cross-border and cascading impacts. This deliverable provides a first impression of the platform and its components. A central theme in the PARATUS project is the co-development of the tools with stakeholders. The central stakeholders within the four applications case studies are therefore full project partners. They will be directly involved in the development of the platform. We foresee that the PARATUS Platform will have two major blocks: an information service that provides static information (or regularly updated information) and simulation service, which is a dynamic component where stakeholders can interactively work with the tools in the platform.
The PARATUS will further make sure that documentation (e.g., software accompanying documentation) is also publicly available via the project website1 and other trusted repositories. The deliverable 4.1 was submitted to the European Commission on 31/07/2023 and is waiting for approval by the Research Executive Agency. COVID-19 Booster Vaccine Acceptance in Ethnic Minority Individuals in the United Kingdom: a mixed-methods study using Protection Motivation Theory
Background: Uptake of the COVID-19 booster vaccine among ethnic minority individuals has been lower than in the general population. However, there is little research examining the psychosocial factors that contribute to COVID-19 booster vaccine hesitancy in this population.Aim: Our study aimed to determine which factors predicted COVID-19 vaccination intention in minority ethnic individuals in Middlesbrough, using Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) and COVID-19 conspiracy beliefs, in addition to demographic variables.Method: We used a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative data were collected using an online survey. Qualitative data were collected using semi-structured interviews. 64 minority ethnic individuals (33 females, 31 males; mage = 31.06, SD = 8.36) completed the survey assessing PMT constructs, COVID-19conspiracy beliefs and demographic factors. 42.2% had received the booster vaccine, 57.6% had not. 16 survey respondents were interviewed online to gain further insight into factors affecting booster vaccineacceptance.Results: Multiple regression analysis showed that perceived susceptibility to COVID-19 was a significant predictor of booster vaccination intention, with higher perceived susceptibility being associated with higher intention to get the booster. Additionally, COVID-19 conspiracy beliefs significantly predictedintention to get the booster vaccine, with higher conspiracy beliefs being associated with lower intention to get the booster dose. Thematic analysis of the interview data showed that barriers to COVID-19 booster vaccination included time constraints and a perceived lack of practical support in the event ofexperiencing side effects. Furthermore, there was a lack of confidence in the vaccine, with individuals seeing it as lacking sufficient research. Participants also spoke of medical mistrust due to historical events involving medical experimentation on minority ethnic individuals.Conclusion: PMT and conspiracy beliefs predict COVID-19 booster vaccination in minority ethnic individuals. To help increase vaccine uptake, community leaders need to be involved in addressing people’s concerns, misassumptions, and lack of confidence in COVID-19 vaccination
Illuminating Hidden Harvests – The contributions of small-scale fisheries to sustainable development
Small-scale fisheries account for at least 40 percent of the global catch from capture fisheries and provide employment across the value chain for an estimated 60.2 million people, about 90 percent of the total number employed in fisheries globally. The economic value of these fisheries, however, is only a part of their importance: for example, nearly 53 million additional people were estimated to be engaged in subsistence activities in 2016. Rightly considered from a holistic and integrated perspective, small-scale fisheries define the livelihoods, nutrition and culture of a substantial and diverse segment of humankind. This study, Illuminating Hidden Harvests: the contributions of small-scale fisheries to sustainable development (hereinafter Illuminating Hidden Harvests, or IHH), uncovers the contributions and impacts of small-scale fisheries through a multidisciplinary approach to data collection and analysis. The study provides information that quantifies and improves understanding of the crucial role of small-scale fisheries in the areas of food security and nutrition, sustainable livelihoods, poverty eradication and healthy ecosystems. It also examines gender equality as well as the nature and scope of governance in small-scale fisheries, and how this differs between different countries and fishery units. The IHH study was carried out in support of the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines), themselves developed in recognition of the plight of small-scale fishers, fishworkers and associated communities. The SSF Guidelines provide advice and direction for the enhancement of responsible and sustainable small-scale fisheries, through the development and implementation of participatory, ecosystem-friendly policies, strategies and legal frameworks
