untersucht
Support for saving the Euro within German industry is deeply split: large exporters want to see the Euro continue, small and family firms do not
Do German business leaders support measures to prop up the Euro and prevent Greece from exiting the currency? Philine Schuseil writes that there seems to be a division in support, with German family businesses in favour of regulatory rules and less integration for the Eurozone, and those who run larger firms and export-orientated businesses defending the Euro and moves towards greater integration
Short-term borrowing for long-term projects: Are family businesses more susceptible to 'irrational' financing choices?
There are noticeable differences between the roles that various forms of credit financing play in family businesses and in other businesses. Family businesses take out more often bank loans specifically to finance investments and innovations, and they particularly often resort to the short-term and relatively expensive option of an overdraft. How can we explain these differences in financing choices? Do family businesses tend to use shorter-term, more expensive sources of financing because they face more restrictions than other or are there other motives such as financial independence at play? Our econometric approach to these issues is to study the financing behaviour and creditworthiness. For both of these aspects, we compare family businesses with non-family-run businesses that otherwise have the same characteristics. Our results do not confirm that family businesses are faced by stronger financial constraints but they indicate that family firms are prepared to accept higher financing costs in order to preserve their financial independence. --Corporate financing, innovation, family businesses, financing restrictions
Goal structures in family firms: empirical evidence on the relationship between firm and family goals
Goal structures in family firms seems of particular interest to the field as the overall orientation and the objectives of family firms are determined in an area of potential conflict between the two subsystems of firm and family. We asked shareholders of German family firms to rate the importance of certain goals in the organization's management. By doing a principal component analysis on the ratings given, we identified four central categories of goals that permit a much more detailed analysis than would a simple differentiation between family-related and firm-related goals. The differences among organizations in the identified dimensions of short-term and long-term family goals, as well as growth- and value-orientated firm goals are then assessed in more detail. Among other aspects, we found the existence of an advisory board to be the strongest driver of goal preferences along these dimensions. Theoretically, our findings indicate that, depending on family firm characteristics, agency and stewardship theory are both useful in explaining the goals of the relevant systems of family and firm. --family firms, goal preferences, agency theory, stewardship theory
