Fair Simulation for Nondeterministic and Probabilistic Buechi Automata: a Coalgebraic Perspective
Notions of simulation, among other uses, provide a computationally tractable
and sound (but not necessarily complete) proof method for language inclusion.
They have been comprehensively studied by Lynch and Vaandrager for
nondeterministic and timed systems; for B\"{u}chi automata the notion of fair
simulation has been introduced by Henzinger, Kupferman and Rajamani. We
contribute to a generalization of fair simulation in two different directions:
one for nondeterministic tree automata previously studied by Bomhard; and the
other for probabilistic word automata with finite state spaces, both under the
B\"{u}chi acceptance condition. The former nondeterministic definition is
formulated in terms of systems of fixed-point equations, hence is readily
translated to parity games and is then amenable to Jurdzi\'{n}ski's algorithm;
the latter probabilistic definition bears a strong ranking-function flavor.
These two different-looking definitions are derived from one source, namely our
coalgebraic modeling of B\"{u}chi automata. Based on these coalgebraic
observations, we also prove their soundness: a simulation indeed witnesses
language inclusion
Fair value accounting and financial stability
Accounting standard setters are considering the wider use of fair value accounting. This paper focuses on the financial stability implications of a move in the banking sector from the current accounting framework to full fair value accounting. A simulation exercise is performed on how various external shocks affect the balance sheet of an average European bank under the two frameworks. The paper further investigates the impact of the alternative framework on the main balance sheet items, and the interaction with banks’ risk management, supervisory tools and statistical requirements. It also examines how the application of fair value accounting to banks’ trading book has impacted their share price volatility. It is concluded that the introduction of full fair value accounting could have a significant effect in terms of income volatility, procyclicality of bank lending and more generally financial stability. Cooperative smartphone relay selection based on fair power utilization for network coverage extension
This paper presents a relay selection algorithm based on fair battery power utilization for extending mobile network coverage and capacity by using a cooperative communication strategy where mobile devices can be utilized as relays. Cooperation improves the network performance for mobile terminals, either by providing access to out-of-range devices or by facilitating multi-path network access to connected devices. In this work, we assume that all mobile devices can benefit from using other mobile devices as relays and investigate the fairness of relay selection algorithms. We point out that signal strength based relay selection inevitably leads to unfair relay selection and devise a new algorithm that is based on fair utilization of power resources on mobile devices. We call this algorithm Credit based Fair Relay Selection (CF-RS) and in this paper show through simulation that the algorithm results in fair battery power utilization, while providing similar data rates compared with traditional approaches. We then extend the solution to demonstrate that adding incentives for relay operation adds clear value for mobile devices in the case they require relay service. Typically, mobile devices represent self-interested users who are reluctant to cooperate with other network users, mainly due to the cost in terms of power and network capacity. In this paper, we present an incentive based solution which provides clear mutual benefit for mobile devices and demonstrate this benefit in the simulation of symmetric and asymmetric network topologies. The CF-RS algorithm achieves the same performance in terms of achievable data rate, Jain's fairness index and utility of end devices in both symmetric and asymmetric network configurations
Comparison between flying capacitor and modular multilevel inverter
The paper describes the operational principle of flying capacitor and modular multilevel inverters. The detailed discussions of dc link capacitors voltage balancing methods for both inverters are given in order to enable fair comparison. The causes of dc link capacitors voltage imbalance in flying capacitor multilevel inverter with more than three levels are highlighted. Computer simulation is used to compare the performance of both inverters under several operating conditions
Applicability of fair simulation
AbstractIn this paper we compare four notions of fair simulation: direct [9], delay [12], game [19], and exists [16]. Our comparison refers to three main aspects: The time complexity of constructing the fair simulation, the ability to use it for minimization, and the relationship between the fair simulations and universal branching-time logics. We developed a practical application that is based on this comparison. The application is a new implementation for the assume-guarantee modular framework presented By Grumberg at al. in [ACM Transactions on Programming Languages and Systems (TOPLAS), 16 (1994) 843]. The new implementation significantly improves the complexity of the framework
Fairness Comparison of Uplink NOMA and OMA
In this paper, we compare the resource allocation fairness of uplink
communications between non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) schemes and
orthogonal multiple access (OMA) schemes. Through characterizing the
contribution of the individual user data rate to the system sum rate, we
analyze the fundamental reasons that NOMA offers a more fair resource
allocation than that of OMA in asymmetric channels. Furthermore, a fairness
indicator metric based on Jain's index is proposed to measure the asymmetry of
multiuser channels. More importantly, the proposed metric provides a selection
criterion for choosing between NOMA and OMA for fair resource allocation. Based
on this discussion, we propose a hybrid NOMA-OMA scheme to further enhance the
users fairness. Simulation results confirm the accuracy of the proposed metric
and demonstrate the fairness enhancement of the proposed hybrid NOMA-OMA scheme
