Virtual Communication Stack: Towards Building Integrated Simulator of Mobile Ad Hoc Network-based Infrastructure for Disaster Response Scenarios
Responses to disastrous events are a challenging problem, because of possible
damages on communication infrastructures. For instance, after a natural
disaster, infrastructures might be entirely destroyed. Different network
paradigms were proposed in the literature in order to deploy adhoc network, and
allow dealing with the lack of communications. However, all these solutions
focus only on the performance of the network itself, without taking into
account the specificities and heterogeneity of the components which use it.
This comes from the difficulty to integrate models with different levels of
abstraction. Consequently, verification and validation of adhoc protocols
cannot guarantee that the different systems will work as expected in
operational conditions. However, the DEVS theory provides some mechanisms to
allow integration of models with different natures. This paper proposes an
integrated simulation architecture based on DEVS which improves the accuracy of

Big Data in Critical Infrastructures Security Monitoring: Challenges and Opportunities
Critical Infrastructures (CIs), such as smart power grids, transport systems,
and financial infrastructures, are more and more vulnerable to cyber threats,
due to the adoption of commodity computing facilities. Despite the use of
several monitoring tools, recent attacks have proven that current defensive
mechanisms for CIs are not effective enough against most advanced threats. In
this paper we explore the idea of a framework leveraging multiple data sources
to improve protection capabilities of CIs. Challenges and opportunities are
discussed along three main research directions: i) use of distinct and
heterogeneous data sources, ii) monitoring with adaptive granularity, and iii)

A Middleware for the Internet of Things
The Internet of Things (IoT) connects everyday objects including a vast array
of sensors, actuators, and smart devices, referred to as things to the
Internet, in an intelligent and pervasive fashion. This connectivity gives rise
to the possibility of using the tracking capabilities of things to impinge on
the location privacy of users. Most of the existing management and location
privacy protection solutions do not consider the low-cost and low-power
requirements of things, or, they do not account for the heterogeneity,
scalability, or autonomy of communications supported in the IoT. Moreover,
these traditional solutions do not consider the case where a user wishes to
control the granularity of the disclosed information based on the context of
their use (e.g. based on the time or the current location of the user). To fill
this gap, a middleware, referred to as the Internet of Things Management

A QoS monitoring system in a heterogeneous multi-domain DVB-H platform
The MobileTV, IPTV, and DVB standards (DVB-H/T) have been defined to offer mobile users interactive multimedia services with quality of service (QoS) consistency analogous to TV services. However, the market has yet to provide effective and economical solutions for the real-time delivery of such services to the corresponding transmitters over multi-domain IP networks. The monitoring system proposed in this paper enables the QoS in the IP networks involved in the delivery of real-time multimedia content to the transmitters to be ascertained. The system utilizes the QoS parameters defined in MPEG-2 Transport Streams to detect problems occurring in the heterogeneous multi-domain IP networks. The ability to detect problems having an adverse effect on QoS allows appropriate control actions to be determined to recover the QoS across the composite IP network. The design and implementation of the proposed QoS-Monitoring system (QoS-MS) is presented, followed by analysis of experimental results that demonstrate the feasibility of the system
