A Pure Binary LP Model to the Facility Layout Problem

    Get PDF
In facility layout problems, a major concern is the optimal design or remodeling of the facilities of an organization. The decision maker’s objective is to arrange the facility in an optimal way, so that the interaction among functions (i.e. machines, inventories, persons) and places (i.e. offices, work locations, depots) is efficient. A simple pure-binary LP model is developed and solved for a small hospital, where five functions are to be redesigned to five different locations. The model is rather flexible and can be used, with small modifications, for larger facility layouts.Facility layout; Binary; Linear Programming; Optimization; Efficiency

The increase of population is directly proportional to the level of living needs, namely the need for clothing, food, shelter, education, and health. Settlement problems include nonphysical problems between social, economic, cultural, ecological as well as physical environmental problems including housing infrastructure and facilities. The spatial layout of the coastal environment that is irregular and not environmentally will cause various problems. This limited residential environmental condition demands a good change made by the community in the area. The purpose of this research is to examine the spatial layout patterns and conditions of the traditional fishing settlements of the Wuring village in the Wolomarang Village. The results showed that the types of shelter found were permanent, semi-permanent and non-permanent. Wuring settlement partners form a spatial pattern of traditional fishing settlements. Wuring village has complete facilities and inscriptions to support a village but has limitations in facilities and infrastructure. Thus, it is necessary to have a direction in the arrangement of the fishermen settlement of Wuring village, among others, to improve settlement support facilities such as facilities and infrastructure. Conclusion, the spatial pattern of Wuring Village has complete facilities and infrastructure with varied typical residential patterns

Facility layout design for hybrid cellular manufacturing systems

Facility layout which is the arrangement of facilities in the shop-floor has a great impact on the performance of manufacturing systems. An effective layout decreases material handling cost, throughput time, lead-time and results in increasing productivity and efficiency of manufacturing systems. Although layout problems have significant roles on the efficacy of manufacturing systems, scant attention has been paid to the layout design in hybrid cellular manufacturing systems. In this paper, a mathematical model for layout problems in a hybrid cellular manufacturing system is proposed that minimizes the total material handling cost (both inter-cell and intra-cell material handling cost). To solve the model, a variant of a simulated annealing algorithm is developed. The results show that the developed algorithm outperforms the algorithm that was benchmarked from the literature in terms of solution quality and computation time

CV. Rasya Jaya is a traditional fishing boat manufacturing company located in Padang Seurahet, Kec. Johan Pahlawan, Aceh Barat Regency. The facility layout of CV. Rasya Jaya has several workstations that are not in the correct location for the production process or the relationship between related rooms. This results in inefficient and ineffective material handling, as well as reduced worker comfort. The poorly organized facilities also contribute to production constraints. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the production facility layout at CV. Rasya Jaya. The goal is to provide an alternative design for the production facility layout that is more efficient and effective in terms of the relationship between the production process flow and minimizing material flow in the production process. The purpose of this study is to determine the optimal layout at CV. Rasya Jaya using the Blocplan algorithm. Blocplan-90 is an algorithm for solving spatial layout problems that can handle both quantitative and qualitative data. Mathematical models within the design are developed with computer applications for models that work with the limitations of workstation shapes. Based on the results of the layout design of facilities at CV. Rasya Jaya, three main layouts were created: office layout, facility layout, and production layout. The total area of the three layouts is 1739 m2

Multi-objective optimization in single-row layout design using a genetic algorithm

This paper presents the development of a genetic algorithm for determining a common linear machine sequence for multi-products with different operation sequences and facilities with a limited number of duplicate machine types available for a job. This work aims to minimize the total flow distance travelled by products, reduce the number of machines arranged in the final linear sequence, and decrease the total investment cost of the machines used in the final sequence. We assume that product flow runs only in the forward direction, either via in-sequence or bypass movement. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm by solving a typical layout design problem taken from literature, and several randomly generated problems. Results indicate that the proposed algorithm serves as a practical decision support tool for resolving layout problems in manufacturing facilities

An Application of an Unequal-Area Facilities Layout Problem with Fixed-Shape Facilities

The unequal-area facility layout problem (UA-FLP) is the problem of locating rectangular facilities on a rectangular floor space such that facilities do not overlap while optimizing some objective. The objective considered in this paper is minimizing the total distance materials travel between facilities. The UA-FLP considered in this paper considers facilities with fixed dimension and was motivated by the investigation of layout options for a production area at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing West Virginia (TMMWV) plant in Buffalo, WV, USA. This paper presents a mathematical model and a genetic algorithm for locating facilities on a continuous plant floor. More specifically, a genetic algorithm, which consists of a boundary search heuristic (BSH), a linear program, and a dual simplex method, is developed for an UA-FLP. To test the performance of the proposed technique, several test problems taken from the literature are used in the analysis. The results show that the proposed heuristic performs well with respect to solution quality and computational time

In this study, we have classified and reviewed different types of problems which are related to facility planning and layout design for different types of manufacturing processes. The main problems which are related to location of  facilities which also affects the system performance  such as distribution of man, material and machine in a plant or a factory and their optimization technique while using of mathematical models, their solutions and application related to whole problems is presented. For solving this type of problems, intelligent techniques such as expert systems, fuzzy logic and neutral networks have been used. In this paper the recent analysis on facility layout is incorporated and facility layout problem is surveyed. Many intelligent techniques and conventional algorithms for solving FLP are presented.
