    Technology or pedagogy?:Exploring k-12 teacher acceptance of learning management systems for collaborative learning

    Abstract. The uptake of Learning Management Systems (LMS) by K-12 institutions has sky-rocketed in the past years, yet a dearth of studies exists measuring teacher acceptance of LMS by taking into consideration collaborative learning. Drawing on this gap, the present study embarks to explore Turkish K-12 teachers’ acceptance of using learning management systems for collaborative learning. This study followed a quantitative approach and adopted Technology Acceptance Model as the theoretical framework. Both internal (perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, attitude, and behavioral intention) and external variables (self-efficacy, compatibility, and facilitating conditions) of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) literature were taken into consideration when studying how teachers’ beliefs on collaborative learning (learning belief, motivation belief, and effort belief) impact their acceptance of LMS for collaborative learning. This study involves a survey of 60 teachers at private schools in Turkey. A Likert-scale type survey questionnaire including demographics, technology acceptance, and collaborative learning beliefs was distributed, and to answer the research questions, descriptive analysis and stepwise multiple regression were utilized for data analysis. Results of the present study indicate that the K-12 teachers accept the use of LMS for CL as easy and useful to use. The teachers reported positive attitudes and willingness to use the LMS for collaborative learning (CL). Both self-efficacy and compatibility positively significantly predicted the acceptance of LMS for CL, while facilitating conditions did not predict acceptance. No significant relationship was found between K-12 teacher CL beliefs and their acceptance of LMS for CL. The present study concluded that a) the availability of support on an organizational and peer level to support K-12 teachers is essential for self-efficacy and b) the compatibility of the either the LMS with the teacher’s way of teaching or vice versa impact K-12 teacher acceptance. The practical implications include suggestions for LMS developers and organizations

    Project knowledge into project practice: generational issues in the knowledge management process

    This paper considers Learning and Knowledge Transfer within the project domain. Knowledge can be a tenuous and elusive concept, and is challenging to transfer within organizations and projects. This challenge is compounded when we consider generational differences in the project and the workplace. This paper looks at learning, and the transfer of that generated knowledge. A number of tools and frameworks have been considered, together with accumulated extant literature. These issues have been deliberated through the lens of different generational types, focusing on the issues and differences in knowledge engagement and absorption between Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y/Millennials. Generation Z/Centennials have also been included where appropriate. This is a significant issue in modern project and organizational structures.     Knowledge Sharing and the Psychological Contract: Managing Knowledge Workers across Different Stages of Employment

    Purpose – An employee’s willingness to share knowledge may be contingent on whether the organization equitably fulfills its reward obligations. This paper seeks to examine how managers and organizations can be vehicles for managing psychological contract perceptions favoring knowledge sharing among current employees, newcomers, and applicants. Design/methodology/approach – The authors propose an integrative model to discuss psychological contract issues within each stage of employment and HRM initiatives that can encourage knowledge-sharing behaviors. Findings – The implicit psychological contracts that often influence knowledge worker attitudes for sharing knowledge are easy to overlook and challenging to manage. Managers must properly assess the nature of psychological contracts maintained by such workers so that knowledge-sharing messages address employees’ key motivators. Different psychological contracts exist at various stages of employment. Several prescriptions for effectively managing each type of psychological contract and reducing perceptions of PC breach were offered. Research limitations/implications – Empirical studies should seek to investigate whether different psychological contracts actually exist within a field setting. In addition, how workers move between transitional, transactional, balanced and relational psychological contracts should be empirically examined. Originality/value – The authors sought to better understand the different psychological contract perceptions of knowledge workers at various stages of employment, which has not been done to date. Such workers are keenly aware of the impact of their knowledge and effective management for sharing rather than hoarding becomes a critical success factor for knowledge-intensive organizations

    Geoweb 2.0 for Participatory Urban Design: Affordances and Critical Success Factors

    In this paper, we discuss the affordances of open-source Geoweb 2.0 platforms to support the participatory design of urban projects in real-world practices.We first introduce the two open-source platforms used in our study for testing purposes. Then, based on evidence from five different field studies we identify five affordances of these platforms: conversations on alternative urban projects, citizen consultation, design empowerment, design studio learning and design research. We elaborate on these in detail and identify a key set of success factors for the facilitation of better practices in the future

    Towards a generic platform for developing CSCL applications using Grid infrastructure

    The goal of this paper is to explore the possibility of using CSCL component-based software under a Grid infrastructure. The merge of these technologies represents an attractive, but probably quite laborious enterprise if we consider not only the benefits but also the barriers that we have to overcome. This work presents an attempt toward this direction by developing a generic platform of CSCL components and discussing the advantages that we could obtain if we adapted it to the Grid. We then propose a means that could make this adjustment possible due to the high degree of genericity that our library component is endowed with by being based on the generic programming paradigm. Finally, an application of our library is proposed both for validating the adequacy of the platform which it is based on and for indicating the possibilities gained by using it under the Grid.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Four facets of a process modeling facilitator

    Business process modeling as a practice and research field has received great attention in recent years. However, while related artifacts such as models, tools or grammars have substantially matured, comparatively little is known about the activities that are conducted as part of the actual act of process modeling. Especially the key role of the modeling facilitator has not been researched to date. In this paper, we propose a new theory-grounded, conceptual framework describing four facets (the driving engineer, the driving artist, the catalyzing engineer, and the catalyzing artist) that can be used by a facilitator. These facets with behavioral styles have been empirically explored via in-depth interviews and additional questionnaires with experienced process analysts. We develop a proposal for an emerging theory for describing, investigating, and explaining different behaviors associated with Business Process Modeling Facilitation. This theory is an important sensitizing vehicle for examining processes and outcomes from process modeling endeavors

    SMEs: ERP or virtual collaboration teams

    Small firms are indeed the engines of global economic growth. Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play an important role to promote economic development. SMEs in the beginning of implementing new technologies always face capital shortage and need technological assistance. Available ERP systems do not fulfil the specific requirements of Small firms. SMEs has scarce resources and manpower therefore many SMEs don?t have the possessions to buy and operate an ERP System. On the other hand competition and competitiveness of SMEs have to be strengthened. This paper briefly reviews the existing perspectives on virtual teams and their effect on SMEs management. It also discusses the main characteristics of virtual teams and clarifies the differences aspects of virtual team application in SMEs. After outlining some of the main advantages and pitfall of such teams, it concentrates on comparing of ERP and virtual collaborative teams in SMEs. Finally, it provides evidence for the need of ?Software as a Service (SaaS)? where an application is hosted as a service provided to customers across the web for SMEs as an alternative of ERP.     Networked by design: can policy constraints support the development of capabilities for collaborative innovation?

    While there has been some recent interest in the behavioural effects of policies in support of innovation networks, this research field is still relatively new. In particular, an important but under-researched question for policy design is “what kind of networks” should be supported, if the objective of the policy is not just to fund successful innovation projects, but also to stimulate behavioural changes in the participants, such as increasing their ability to engage in collaborative innovation. By studying the case of the innovation policy programmes implemented by the regional government of Tuscany, in Italy, between 2002 and 2008, we assess whether the imposition of constraints on the design of innovation networks has enhanced the participants’ collaborative innovation capabilities, and we draw some general implications for policy
