Fast Landmark Localization with 3D Component Reconstruction and CNN for Cross-Pose Recognition
Two approaches are proposed for cross-pose face recognition, one is based on
the 3D reconstruction of facial components and the other is based on the deep
Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Unlike most 3D approaches that consider
holistic faces, the proposed approach considers 3D facial components. It
segments a 2D gallery face into components, reconstructs the 3D surface for
each component, and recognizes a probe face by component features. The
segmentation is based on the landmarks located by a hierarchical algorithm that
combines the Faster R-CNN for face detection and the Reduced Tree Structured
Model for landmark localization. The core part of the CNN-based approach is a
revised VGG network. We study the performances with different settings on the
training set, including the synthesized data from 3D reconstruction, the
real-life data from an in-the-wild database, and both types of data combined.
We investigate the performances of the network when it is employed as a
classifier or designed as a feature extractor. The two recognition approaches
and the fast landmark localization are evaluated in extensive experiments, and
compared to stateof-the-art methods to demonstrate their efficacy.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, 4 table
Deep Adaptive Learning for Writer Identification based on Single Handwritten Word Images
There are two types of information in each handwritten word image: explicit
information which can be easily read or derived directly, such as lexical
content or word length, and implicit attributes such as the author's identity.
Whether features learned by a neural network for one task can be used for
another task remains an open question. In this paper, we present a deep
adaptive learning method for writer identification based on single-word images
using multi-task learning. An auxiliary task is added to the training process
to enforce the emergence of reusable features. Our proposed method transfers
the benefits of the learned features of a convolutional neural network from an
auxiliary task such as explicit content recognition to the main task of writer
identification in a single procedure. Specifically, we propose a new adaptive
convolutional layer to exploit the learned deep features. A multi-task neural
network with one or several adaptive convolutional layers is trained
end-to-end, to exploit robust generic features for a specific main task, i.e.,
writer identification. Three auxiliary tasks, corresponding to three explicit
attributes of handwritten word images (lexical content, word length and
character attributes), are evaluated. Experimental results on two benchmark
datasets show that the proposed deep adaptive learning method can improve the
performance of writer identification based on single-word images, compared to
non-adaptive and simple linear-adaptive approaches.Comment: Under view of Pattern Recognitio
Deep Learning for Face Anti-Spoofing: A Survey
Face anti-spoofing (FAS) has lately attracted increasing attention due to its
vital role in securing face recognition systems from presentation attacks
(PAs). As more and more realistic PAs with novel types spring up, traditional
FAS methods based on handcrafted features become unreliable due to their
limited representation capacity. With the emergence of large-scale academic
datasets in the recent decade, deep learning based FAS achieves remarkable
performance and dominates this area. However, existing reviews in this field
mainly focus on the handcrafted features, which are outdated and uninspiring
for the progress of FAS community. In this paper, to stimulate future research,
we present the first comprehensive review of recent advances in deep learning
based FAS. It covers several novel and insightful components: 1) besides
supervision with binary label (e.g., '0' for bonafide vs. '1' for PAs), we also
investigate recent methods with pixel-wise supervision (e.g., pseudo depth
map); 2) in addition to traditional intra-dataset evaluation, we collect and
analyze the latest methods specially designed for domain generalization and
open-set FAS; and 3) besides commercial RGB camera, we summarize the deep
learning applications under multi-modal (e.g., depth and infrared) or
specialized (e.g., light field and flash) sensors. We conclude this survey by
emphasizing current open issues and highlighting potential prospects.Comment: IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence
