2D Face Recognition System Based on Selected Gabor Filters and Linear Discriminant Analysis LDA
We present a new approach for face recognition system. The method is based on
2D face image features using subset of non-correlated and Orthogonal Gabor
Filters instead of using the whole Gabor Filter Bank, then compressing the
output feature vector using Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). The face image
has been enhanced using multi stage image processing technique to normalize it
and compensate for illumination variation. Experimental results show that the
proposed system is effective for both dimension reduction and good recognition
performance when compared to the complete Gabor filter bank. The system has
been tested using CASIA, ORL and Cropped YaleB 2D face images Databases and
achieved average recognition rate of 98.9 %
Polar Fusion Technique Analysis for Evaluating the Performances of Image Fusion of Thermal and Visual Images for Human Face Recognition
This paper presents a comparative study of two different methods, which are
based on fusion and polar transformation of visual and thermal images. Here,
investigation is done to handle the challenges of face recognition, which
include pose variations, changes in facial expression, partial occlusions,
variations in illumination, rotation through different angles, change in scale
etc. To overcome these obstacles we have implemented and thoroughly examined
two different fusion techniques through rigorous experimentation. In the first
method log-polar transformation is applied to the fused images obtained after
fusion of visual and thermal images whereas in second method fusion is applied
on log-polar transformed individual visual and thermal images. After this step,
which is thus obtained in one form or another, Principal Component Analysis
(PCA) is applied to reduce dimension of the fused images. Log-polar transformed
images are capable of handling complicacies introduced by scaling and rotation.
The main objective of employing fusion is to produce a fused image that
provides more detailed and reliable information, which is capable to overcome
the drawbacks present in the individual visual and thermal face images.
Finally, those reduced fused images are classified using a multilayer
perceptron neural network. The database used for the experiments conducted here
is Object Tracking and Classification Beyond Visible Spectrum (OTCBVS) database
benchmark thermal and visual face images. The second method has shown better
performance, which is 95.71% (maximum) and on an average 93.81% as correct
recognition rate.Comment: Proceedings of IEEE Workshop on Computational Intelligence in

Face image super-resolution using 2D CCA
In this paper a face super-resolution method using two-dimensional canonical correlation analysis (2D CCA) is presented. A detail compensation step is followed to add high-frequency components to the reconstructed high-resolution face. Unlike most of the previous researches on face super-resolution algorithms that first transform the images into vectors, in our approach the relationship between the high-resolution and the low-resolution face image are maintained in their original 2D representation. In addition, rather than approximating the entire face, different parts of a face image are super-resolved separately to better preserve the local structure. The proposed method is compared with various state-of-the-art super-resolution algorithms using multiple evaluation criteria including face recognition performance. Results on publicly available datasets show that the proposed method super-resolves high quality face images which are very close to the ground-truth and performance gain is not dataset dependent. The method is very efficient in both the training and testing phases compared to the other approaches. © 2013 Elsevier B.V
Efficient Image-Space Extraction and Representation of 3D Surface Topography
Surface topography refers to the geometric micro-structure of a surface and
defines its tactile characteristics (typically in the sub-millimeter range).
High-resolution 3D scanning techniques developed recently enable the 3D
reconstruction of surfaces including their surface topography. In his paper, we
present an efficient image-space technique for the extraction of surface
topography from high-resolution 3D reconstructions. Additionally, we filter
noise and enhance topographic attributes to obtain an improved representation
for subsequent topography classification. Comprehensive experiments show that
the our representation captures well topographic attributes and significantly
improves classification performance compared to alternative 2D and 3D
representations.Comment: Initial version of the paper accepted at the IEEE ICIP Conference

Optical techniques for 3D surface reconstruction in computer-assisted laparoscopic surgery
One of the main challenges for computer-assisted surgery (CAS) is to determine the intra-opera- tive morphology and motion of soft-tissues. This information is prerequisite to the registration of multi-modal patient-specific data for enhancing the surgeon’s navigation capabilites by observ- ing beyond exposed tissue surfaces and for providing intelligent control of robotic-assisted in- struments. In minimally invasive surgery (MIS), optical techniques are an increasingly attractive approach for in vivo 3D reconstruction of the soft-tissue surface geometry. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art methods for optical intra-operative 3D reconstruction in laparoscopic surgery and discusses the technical challenges and future perspectives towards clinical translation. With the recent paradigm shift of surgical practice towards MIS and new developments in 3D opti- cal imaging, this is a timely discussion about technologies that could facilitate complex CAS procedures in dynamic and deformable anatomical regions
Face Detection And Lip Localization
Integration of audio and video signals for automatic speech recognition has become an important field of study. The Audio-Visual Speech Recognition (AVSR) system is known to have accuracy higher than audio-only or visual-only system. The research focused on the visual front end and has been centered around lip segmentation. Experiments performed for lip feature extraction were mainly done in constrained environment with controlled background noise. In this thesis we focus our attention to a database collected in the environment of a moving car which hampered the quality of the imagery.
We first introduce the concept of illumination compensation, where we try to reduce the dependency of light from over- or under-exposed images. As a precursor to lip segmentation, we focus on a robust face detection technique which reaches an accuracy of 95%. We have detailed and compared three different face detection techniques and found a successful way of concatenating them in order to increase the overall accuracy. One of the detection techniques used was the object detection algorithm proposed by Viola-Jones. We have experimented with different color spaces using the Viola-Jones algorithm and have reached interesting conclusions.
Following face detection we implement a lip localization algorithm based on the vertical gradients of hybrid equations of color. Despite the challenging background and image quality, success rate of 88% was achieved for lip segmentation
