    Video shot boundary detection: seven years of TRECVid activity

    Shot boundary detection (SBD) is the process of automatically detecting the boundaries between shots in video. It is a problem which has attracted much attention since video became available in digital form as it is an essential pre-processing step to almost all video analysis, indexing, summarisation, search, and other content-based operations. Automatic SBD was one of the tracks of activity within the annual TRECVid benchmarking exercise, each year from 2001 to 2007 inclusive. Over those seven years we have seen 57 different research groups from across the world work to determine the best approaches to SBD while using a common dataset and common scoring metrics. In this paper we present an overview of the TRECVid shot boundary detection task, a high-level overview of the most significant of the approaches taken, and a comparison of performances, focussing on one year (2005) as an example

    In this paper we describe our experiments in the automatic and interactive search tasks and the BBC rushes pilot task of TRECVid 2005. Our approach this year is somewhat different than previous submissions in that we have implemented a multi-user search system using a DiamondTouch tabletop device from Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs (MERL).We developed two versions of oursystem one with emphasis on efficient completion of the search task (Físchlár-DT Efficiency) and the other with more emphasis on increasing awareness among searchers (Físchlár-DT Awareness). We supplemented these runs with a further two runs one for each of the two systems, in which we augmented the initial results with results from an automatic run. In addition to these interactive submissions we also submitted three fully automatic runs. We also took part in the BBC rushes pilot task where we indexed the video by semi-automatic segmentation of objects appearing in the video and our search/browsing system allows full keyframe and/or object-based searching. In the interactive search experiments we found that the awareness system outperformed the efficiency system. We also found that supplementing the interactive results with results of an automatic run improves both the Mean Average Precision and Recall values for both system variants. Our results suggest that providing awareness cues in a collaborative search setting improves retrieval performance. We also learned that multi-user searching is a viable alternative to the traditional single searcher paradigm, provided the system is designed to effectively support collaboration

    Combining relevance information in a synchronous collaborative information retrieval environment

    Traditionally information retrieval (IR) research has focussed on a single user interaction modality, where a user searches to satisfy an information need. Recent advances in both web technologies, such as the sociable web of Web 2.0, and computer hardware, such as tabletop interface devices, have enabled multiple users to collaborate on many computer-related tasks. Due to these advances there is an increasing need to support two or more users searching together at the same time, in order to satisfy a shared information need, which we refer to as Synchronous Collaborative Information Retrieval. Synchronous Collaborative Information Retrieval (SCIR) represents a significant paradigmatic shift from traditional IR systems. In order to support an effective SCIR search, new techniques are required to coordinate users' activities. In this chapter we explore the effectiveness of a sharing of knowledge policy on a collaborating group. Sharing of knowledge refers to the process of passing relevance information across users, if one user finds items of relevance to the search task then the group should benefit in the form of improved ranked lists returned to each searcher. In order to evaluate the proposed techniques we simulate two users searching together through an incremental feedback system. The simulation assumes that users decide on an initial query with which to begin the collaborative search and proceed through the search by providing relevance judgments to the system and receiving a new ranked list. In order to populate these simulations we extract data from the interaction logs of various experimental IR systems from previous Text REtrieval Conference (TREC) workshops

    Search trails using user feedback to improve video search

    In this paper we present an innovative approach for aiding users in the difficult task of video search. We use community based feedback mined from the interactions of previous users of our video search system to aid users in their search tasks. This feedback is the basis for providing recommendations to users of our video retrieval system. The ultimate goal of this system is to improve the quality of the results that users find, and in doing so, help users to explore a large and difficult information space and help them consider search options that they may not have considered otherwise. In particular we wish to make the difficult task of search for video much easier for users. The results of a user evaluation indicate that we achieved our goals, the performance of the users in retrieving relevant videos improved, and users were able to explore the collection to a greater extent

    Hierarchical modelling and adaptive clustering for real-time summarization of rush videos

    In this paper, we provide detailed descriptions of a proposed new algorithm for video summarization, which are also included in our submission to TRECVID'08 on BBC rush summarization. Firstly, rush videos are hierarchically modeled using the formal language technique. Secondly, shot detections are applied to introduce a new concept of V-unit for structuring videos in line with the hierarchical model, and thus junk frames within the model are effectively removed. Thirdly, adaptive clustering is employed to group shots into clusters to determine retakes for redundancy removal. Finally, each most representative shot selected from every cluster is ranked according to its length and sum of activity level for summarization. Competitive results have been achieved to prove the effectiveness and efficiency of our techniques, which are fully implemented in the compressed domain. Our work does not require high-level semantics such as object detection and speech/audio analysis which provides a more flexible and general solution for this topic

    Random Assisted Browsing of Rushes Archives

    How to efficiently browse a large video database if its content is unknown to the user? In this paper we propose new approaches for browsing initialisation, exploration and content access of a rushes archive, where the span of information stored can be huge and difficult to understand at a glance. Exploring and navigating through raw footage is assisted by organising the video material in a meaningful structure and by adopting appropriate visualisation solutions. Un-annotated content is organised in hierarchical previews, while browsing is enabled by novel methods of random exploration and random content access to preview nodes. User tests conducted on professional users in a real-work scenario aim at demonstrating how the hierarchical visualisation and the proposed random browsing solutions assist the process of accessing and retrieving desired content

    Division of labour and sharing of knowledge for synchronous collaborative information retrieval

    Synchronous collaborative information retrieval (SCIR) is concerned with supporting two or more users who search together at the same time in order to satisfy a shared information need. SCIR systems represent a paradigmatic shift in the way we view information retrieval, moving from an individual to a group process and as such the development of novel IR techniques is needed to support this. In this article we present what we believe are two key concepts for the development of effective SCIR namely division of labour (DoL) and sharing of knowledge (SoK). Together these concepts enable coordinated SCIR such that redundancy across group members is reduced whilst enabling each group member to benefit from the discoveries of their collaborators. In this article we outline techniques from state-of-the-art SCIR systems which support these two concepts, primarily through the provision of awareness widgets. We then outline some of our own work into system-mediated techniques for division of labour and sharing of knowledge in SCIR. Finally we conclude with a discussion on some possible future trends for these two coordination techniques

    Feature based dynamic intra-video indexing

    A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment for the degree of Doctor of PhilosophyWith the advent of digital imagery and its wide spread application in all vistas of life, it has become an important component in the world of communication. Video content ranging from broadcast news, sports, personal videos, surveillance, movies and entertainment and similar domains is increasing exponentially in quantity and it is becoming a challenge to retrieve content of interest from the corpora. This has led to an increased interest amongst the researchers to investigate concepts of video structure analysis, feature extraction, content annotation, tagging, video indexing, querying and retrieval to fulfil the requirements. However, most of the previous work is confined within specific domain and constrained by the quality, processing and storage capabilities. This thesis presents a novel framework agglomerating the established approaches from feature extraction to browsing in one system of content based video retrieval. The proposed framework significantly fills the gap identified while satisfying the imposed constraints of processing, storage, quality and retrieval times. The output entails a framework, methodology and prototype application to allow the user to efficiently and effectively retrieved content of interest such as age, gender and activity by specifying the relevant query. Experiments have shown plausible results with an average precision and recall of 0.91 and 0.92 respectively for face detection using Haar wavelets based approach. Precision of age ranges from 0.82 to 0.91 and recall from 0.78 to 0.84. The recognition of gender gives better precision with males (0.89) compared to females while recall gives a higher value with females (0.92). Activity of the subject has been detected using Hough transform and classified using Hiddell Markov Model. A comprehensive dataset to support similar studies has also been developed as part of the research process. A Graphical User Interface (GUI) providing a friendly and intuitive interface has been integrated into the developed system to facilitate the retrieval process. The comparison results of the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) shows that the performance of the system closely resembles with that of the human annotator.     Evaluation of the influence of personality types on performance of shared tasks in a collaborative environment

    Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) is an area of computing that has been receiving much attention in recent years. Developments in groupware technology, such as MERL’s Diamondtouch and Microsoft’s Surface, have presented us with new, challenging and exciting ways to carry out group tasks. However, these groupware technologies present us with a novel area of research in the field of computing – that being multi-user Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). With multi-user HCI, we no longer have to cater for one person working on their own PC. We must now consider multiple users and their preferences as a group in order to design groupware applications that best suit the needs of that group. In this thesis, we aim to identify how groups of two people (dyads), given their various personality types and preferences, work together on groupware technologies. We propose interface variants to both competitive and collaborative systems in an attempt to identify what aspects of an interface or task best suit the needs of the different dyads, maximising their performance and producing high levels of user satisfaction. In order to determine this, we introduce a series of user experiments that we carried out with 18 dyads and analyse their performance, behaviour and responses to each of 5 systems and their respective variants.
