    Efficient hardware architectures for MPEG-4 core profile

    Efficient hardware acceleration architectures are proposed for the most demandingMPEG-4 core profile algorithms, namely; texture motion estimation (TME), binary motion estimation (BME)and the shape adaptive discrete cosine transform (SA-DCT). The proposed ME designs may also be used for H.264, since both architectures can handle variable block sizes. Both ME architectures employ early termination techniques that reduce latency and save needless memory accesses and power consumption. They also use a pixel subsampling technique to facilitate parallelism, while balancing the computational load. The BME datapath also saves operations by using Run Length Coded (RLC) pixel addressing. The SA-DCT module has a re-configuring multiplier-less serial datapath using adders and multiplexers only to improve area and power. The SA-DCT packing steps are done using a minimal switching addressing scheme with guarded evaluation. All three modules have been synthesised targeting the WildCard-II FPGA benchmarking platform adopted by the MPEG-4 Part9 reference hardware group

    Low power techniques for video compression

    This paper gives an overview of low-power techniques proposed in the literature for mobile multimedia and Internet applications. Exploitable aspects are discussed in the behavior of different video compression tools. These power-efficient solutions are then classified by synthesis domain and level of abstraction. As this paper is meant to be a starting point for further research in the area, a lowpower hardware & software co-design methodology is outlined in the end as a possible scenario for video-codec-on-a-chip implementations on future mobile multimedia platforms

    This paper presents a brief overview of past and current hardware acceleration (HwA) approaches that have been proposed for the most computationally intensive compression tools of the MPEG-4 standard. These approaches are classified based on their historical evolution and architectural approach. An analysis of both evolutionary and functional classifications is carried out in order to speculate on the possible trends of the HwA architectures to be employed in mobile video platforms

    Implementation of a motion estimation algorithm for Intel FPGAs using OpenCL

    Producción CientíficaMotion Estimation is one of the main tasks behind any video encoder. It is a compu- tationally costly task; therefore, it is usually delegated to specific or reconfigurable hardware, such as FPGAs. Over the years, multiple FPGA implementations have been developed, mainly using hardware description languages such as Verilog or VHDL. Since programming using hardware description languages is a complex task, it is desirable to use higher-level languages to develop FPGA applications.The aim of this work is to evaluate OpenCL, in terms of expressiveness, as a tool for devel- oping this kind of FPGA applications. To do so, we present and evaluate a parallel implementation of the Block Matching Motion Estimation process using OpenCL for Intel FPGAs, usable and tested on an Intel Stratix 10 FPGA. The implementa- tion efficiently processes Full HD frames completely inside the FPGA. In this work, we show the resource utilization when synthesizing the code on an Intel Stratix 10 FPGA, as well as a performance comparison with multiple CPU implementations with varying levels of optimization and vectorization capabilities.     Customized Nios II multi-cycle instructions to accelerate block-matching techniques

    This study focuses on accelerating the optimization of motion estimation algorithms, which are widely used in video coding standards, by using both the paradigm based on Altera Custom Instructions as well as the efficient combination of SDRAM and On-Chip memory of Nios II processor. Firstly, a complete code profiling is carried out before the optimization in order to detect time leaking affecting the motion compensation algorithms. Then, a multi-cycle Custom Instruction which will be added to the specific embedded design is implemented. The approach deployed is based on optimizing SOC performance by using an efficient combination of On-Chip memory and SDRAM with regards to the reset vector, exception vector, stack, heap, read/write data (.rwdata), read only data (.rodata), and program text (.text) in the design. Furthermore, this approach aims to enhance the said algorithms by incorporating Custom Instructions in the Nios II ISA. Finally, the efficient combination of both methods is then developed to build the final embedded system. The present contribution thus facilitates motion coding for low-cost Soft-Core microprocessors, particularly the RISC architecture of Nios II implemented in FPGA. It enables us to construct an SOC which processes 50×50 @ 180 fps
