    Accelerated hardware video object segmentation: From foreground detection to connected components labelling

    This is the preprint version of the Article - Copyright @ 2010 ElsevierThis paper demonstrates the use of a single-chip FPGA for the segmentation of moving objects in a video sequence. The system maintains highly accurate background models, and integrates the detection of foreground pixels with the labelling of objects using a connected components algorithm. The background models are based on 24-bit RGB values and 8-bit gray scale intensity values. A multimodal background differencing algorithm is presented, using a single FPGA chip and four blocks of RAM. The real-time connected component labelling algorithm, also designed for FPGA implementation, run-length encodes the output of the background subtraction, and performs connected component analysis on this representation. The run-length encoding, together with other parts of the algorithm, is performed in parallel; sequential operations are minimized as the number of run-lengths are typically less than the number of pixels. The two algorithms are pipelined together for maximum efficiency

    AXIOM project aims at developing a heterogeneous computing board (SMP-FPGA).The Software Layers developed at the AXIOM project are explained.OmpSs provides an easy way to execute heterogeneous codes in multiple cores. People and objects will soon share the same digital network for information exchange in a world named as the age of the cyber-physical systems. The general expectation is that people and systems will interact in real-time. This poses pressure onto systems design to support increasing demands on computational power, while keeping a low power envelop. Additionally, modular scaling and easy programmability are also important to ensure these systems to become widespread. The whole set of expectations impose scientific and technological challenges that need to be properly addressed.The AXIOM project (Agile, eXtensible, fast I/O Module) will research new hardware/software architectures for cyber-physical systems to meet such expectations. The technical approach aims at solving fundamental problems to enable easy programmability of heterogeneous multi-core multi-board systems. AXIOM proposes the use of the task-based OmpSs programming model, leveraging low-level communication interfaces provided by the hardware. Modular scalability will be possible thanks to a fast interconnect embedded into each module. To this aim, an innovative ARM and FPGA-based board will be designed, with enhanced capabilities for interfacing with the physical world.     Hardware acceleration of the trace transform for vision applications

    Computer Vision is a rapidly developing field in which machines process visual data to extract meaningful information. Digitised images in their pixels and bits serve no purpose of their own. It is only by interpreting the data, and extracting higher level information that a scene can be understood. The algorithms that enable this process are often complex, and data-intensive, limiting the processing rate when implemented in software. Hardware-accelerated implementations provide a significant performance boost that can enable real- time processing. The Trace Transform is a newly proposed algorithm that has been proven effective in image categorisation and recognition tasks. It is flexibly defined allowing the mathematical details to be tailored to the target application. However, it is highly computationally intensive, which limits its applications. Modern heterogeneous FPGAs provide an ideal platform for accelerating the Trace transform for real-time performance, while also allowing an element of flexibility, which highly suits the generality of the Trace transform. This thesis details the implementation of an extensible Trace transform architecture for vision applications, before extending this architecture to a full flexible platform suited to the exploration of Trace transform applications. As part of the work presented, a general set of architectures for large-windowed median and weighted median filters are presented as required for a number of Trace transform implementations. Finally an acceleration of Pseudo 2-Dimensional Hidden Markov Model decoding, usable in a person detection system, is presented. Such a system can be used to extract frames of interest from a video sequence, to be subsequently processed by the Trace transform. All these architectures emphasise the need for considered, platform-driven design in achieving maximum performance through hardware acceleration

    The Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider has collected almost 1 billion Y(4S) events in its decade of operation. Super-KEKB, an upgrade of KEKB is under construction, to increase the luminosity by two orders of magnitude during a three-year shutdown, with an ultimate goal of 8E35 /cm^2 /s luminosity. To exploit the increased luminosity, an upgrade of the Belle detector has been proposed. A new international collaboration Belle-II, is being formed.     Speeding up Adaboost object detection with motion segmentation and Haar feature acceleration

    A key challenge in a surveillance system is the object detection task. Object detection in general is a non-trivial problem. A sub-problem within the broader context of object detection which many researchers focus on is face detection. Numerous techniques have been proposed for face detection. One of the better performing algorithms is proposed by Viola et. al. This algorithm is based on Adaboost and uses Haar features to detect objects. The main reason for its popularity is very low false positive rates and the fact that the classifier network can be trained for any detection task. The use of Haar basis functions to represent key object features is the key to its success. The basis functions are organized as a network to form a strong classifier. To detect objects, this technique divides each input image into non-overlapping sub-windows and the strong classifier is applied to each sub-window to detect the presence of an object. The process is repeated at multiple scales of the input image to detect objects of various sizes. In this thesis we propose an object detection system that uses object segmentation as a preprocessing step. We use Mixture of Gaussians (MoG) proposed by Staffer et. al. for object segmentation. One key advantage with using segmentation to extract image regions of interest is that it reduces the number of search windows sent to detection task, thereby reducing the computational complexity and the execution time. Moreover, owing to the computational complexity of both the segmentation and detection algorithms we used in the system, we propose hardware architectures for accelerating key computationally intensive blocks. In this thesis we propose hardware architecture for MoG and also for a key compute intensive block within the adaboost algorithm corresponding to the Haar feature computation

    Real time motion estimation using a neural architecture implemented on GPUs

    This work describes a neural network based architecture that represents and estimates object motion in videos. This architecture addresses multiple computer vision tasks such as image segmentation, object representation or characterization, motion analysis and tracking. The use of a neural network architecture allows for the simultaneous estimation of global and local motion and the representation of deformable objects. This architecture also avoids the problem of finding corresponding features while tracking moving objects. Due to the parallel nature of neural networks, the architecture has been implemented on GPUs that allows the system to meet a set of requirements such as: time constraints management, robustness, high processing speed and re-configurability. Experiments are presented that demonstrate the validity of our architecture to solve problems of mobile agents tracking and motion analysis.This work was partially funded by the Spanish Government DPI2013-40534-R grant and Valencian Government GV/2013/005 grant

    Neural Network Methods for Radiation Detectors and Imaging

    Recent advances in image data processing through machine learning and especially deep neural networks (DNNs) allow for new optimization and performance-enhancement schemes for radiation detectors and imaging hardware through data-endowed artificial intelligence. We give an overview of data generation at photon sources, deep learning-based methods for image processing tasks, and hardware solutions for deep learning acceleration. Most existing deep learning approaches are trained offline, typically using large amounts of computational resources. However, once trained, DNNs can achieve fast inference speeds and can be deployed to edge devices. A new trend is edge computing with less energy consumption (hundreds of watts or less) and real-time analysis potential. While popularly used for edge computing, electronic-based hardware accelerators ranging from general purpose processors such as central processing units (CPUs) to application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) are constantly reaching performance limits in latency, energy consumption, and other physical constraints. These limits give rise to next-generation analog neuromorhpic hardware platforms, such as optical neural networks (ONNs), for high parallel, low latency, and low energy computing to boost deep learning acceleration
