Smart Sensing Technologies for Personalised Coaching
People living in both developed and developing countries face serious health challenges related to sedentary lifestyles. It is therefore essential to find new ways to improve health so that people can live longer and can age well. With an ever-growing number of smart sensing systems developed and deployed across the globe, experts are primed to help coach people toward healthier behaviors. The increasing accountability associated with app- and device-based behavior tracking not only provides timely and personalized information and support but also gives us an incentive to set goals and to do more. This book presents some of the recent efforts made towards automatic and autonomous identification and coaching of troublesome behaviors to procure lasting, beneficial behavioral changes
The coming decade of digital brain research - A vision for neuroscience at the intersection of technology and computing
Brain research has in recent years indisputably entered a new epoch, driven by substantial methodological advances and digitally enabled data integration and modeling at multiple scales – from molecules to the whole system. Major advances are emerging at the intersection of neuroscience with technology and computing. This new science of the brain integrates high-quality basic research, systematic data integration across multiple scales, a new culture of large-scale collaboration and translation into applications. A systematic approach, as pioneered in Europe’s Human Brain Project (HBP), will be essential in meeting the pressing medical and technological challenges of the coming decade. The aims of this paper are:
To develop a concept for the coming decade of digital brain research
To discuss it with the research community at large, with the aim of identifying points of convergence and common goals. To provide a scientific framework for current and future development of EBRAINS.
To inform and engage stakeholders, funding organizations and research institutions regarding future digital brain research.
To identify and address key ethical and societal issues.
While we do not claim that there is a ‘one size fits all’ approach to addressing these aspects, we are convinced that discussions around the theme of digital brain research will help drive progress in the broader field of neuroscience

the European Innovation Partnership on Active and
Healthy Ageing supports the innovation of the
Regional Health System, to face up demographic
changes and sustainability. Campania Reference Site
provides the opportunity to connect loco-regional
stakeholders in social and health care services
(universities, healthcare providers, social services,
local communities and municipalities), with
international organizations, in order to adopt and
scale up innovative solutions and approaches. This
paper describes the building process of Campania
Reference Site and the main results achieved, that
have been allowing it to become a hub for open
innovation in the field of active and healthy aging at
regional, national and international level

This research provides new insights into the many factors that influence patient comfort in healthcare settings. The findings informed the development of the Comfort ALways Matters (CALM) framework that can be used by healthcare leaders and clinicians to guide practice and quality initiatives aimed at improving patients’ experiences of care
Central monitoring system for ambient assisted living
Smart homes for aged care enable the elderly to stay in their own homes longer. By means of various types of ambient and wearable sensors information is gathered on people living in smart homes for aged care. This information is then processed to determine the activities of daily living (ADL) and provide vital information to carers. Many examples of smart homes for aged care can be found in literature, however, little or no evidence can be found with respect to interoperability of various sensors and devices along with associated functions. One key element with respect to interoperability is the central monitoring system in a smart home. This thesis analyses and presents key functions and requirements of a central monitoring system. The outcomes of this thesis may benefit developers of smart homes for aged care
Lifestyle and Chronic Pain
Cumulating evidence shows that lifestyle factors such as physical (in)activity, stress, poor sleep, unhealthy diet, and smoking are associated with chronic pain severity and sustainment across all age categories. A paradigm shift from a tissue- and disease-based approach towards individually tailored multimodal lifestyle interventions should lead to improved outcomes and decrease the psychological and socioeconomic burden of chronic pain. Such an approach fits well into the global move towards precision pain medicine for patients with chronic pain. For these reasons, this book is dedicated to Lifestyle and Chronic Pain
