    Clamp-assisted retractor advancement for lower eyelid involutional entropion

    Scientific Poster 144PURPOSE: To describe a novel approach to internal repair of lower lid entropion using the Putterman clamp. METHODS: Retrospective, consecutive case series of patients with entropion who underwent retractor advancement using the clamp. RESULTS: Seven eyes of 6 patients (average age: 80; 4 women and 2 men) were analyzed. Complete resolution was achieved in 5 of the 6 patients (83.3%). The 1 patient with recurrence had 2 previous entropion surgeries on each eye over the past 4 years; there was lid laxity, and horizontal tightening was needed. No severe adverse events occurred in the patients. CONCLUSION: Clamp-assisted lower lid retractor advancement offers a safe and effective, minimally invasive approach to involutional entropion. Further study is needed to assess its role in recurrent entropion.postprin

    Smart optical imaging systems with automated electronics

    In this dissertation, proposed and demonstrated are several novel smart electronically automated optical designs to efficiently solve existing real-world problems in the field of shape sensing and imaging. First half of the thesis proposes shape sensing techniques that use an Electronically Controlled Variable Focus Lens (ECVFL) within a smart optical design suitable for a wide range of applications including shape sensing and projection displays. The second part of this dissertation involves the use of the Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) deployed within several smart optical designs including an embedded laser beam profiler and a new camera idea which is inspired by the Telecommunication science field. Specifically, proposed and demonstrated is the design and implementation of the novel imaging device called Coded Access Optical Sensor (CAOS) where CAOS is able of operating with different application dependent working modes. Experimentally and successfully demonstrated for the first time are its use for coherent light laser imaging as well as for incoherent imaging of a high dynamic range white light scenario. It is also shown how its design can be further extended for multispectral and hyperspectral imaging applications

    Three dimensional touch and vision for the micro-world

    The ability to observe at tiny length scales has enabled key advances across the physical and life sciences. Much of what we know about the structure of cells and tissues comes from experiments on the micron length scale, enabled by new microscopy techniques. Modern manufacturing is increasingly concerned with materials that are structured on the nanometre scale, and devices which have ever-smaller features. Manipulating and measuring microscopic objects is a problem common to fields as diverse as microfabrication and cell biology, and it is these challenges that my doctoral studies have addressed. Tiny sizes mean tiny forces; so small that the light from a laser can be used to propel objects. Optical tweezers, a technique pioneered some two and a half decades ago, exploit light’s momentum to trap and manipulate objects. Now an established tool, single particles can be trapped and tracked to measure forces on a molecular scale, and this work is responsible for much of our current knowledge of motor proteins. This thesis describes advances in the holographic technology used to control multiple optical traps (and hence many trapped particles), and improved methods for monitoring the positions and forces involved. The speed with which multiple holographic optical traps can be moved has traditionally been limited by the time taken to calculate holograms, but by using consumer graphics cards and high speed Spatial Light Modulators (SLMs) I have implemented holographic systems fast enough to react to the Brownian motion of trapped particles. Brownian motion can, to some extent, be suppressed by this approach, and it also allows the trap's stiffness to be engineered to balance sensitivity against tight constraint of position. Feedback control using an SLM, rather than the other beam steering technologies that have been employed, is able to react to motion in three dimensions. This requires 3D position measurement, which is provided by the stereo microscopy technique described in Chapter 2. By illuminating and viewing the sample from two different angles it is possible to reconstruct the depth of objects. This is accomplished through a single high numerical aperture microscope objective, the same lens used to focus the trapping laser. In conjunction with a fast CMOS camera, it is possible to track particles with an accuracy of 2-3nm at several thousand frames per second. This allows measurement of forces and displacements within the control loop, that can be fed back to influence the position of the optical traps. This force information can also be relayed to the operator using a force-feedback joystick as detailed in Chapter 7. Interface design is an important part of making technology accessible to scientists from other disciplines; to this end I have also developed a multi-touch tablet application to control optical tweezers. By creating simple, reliable systems and coupling them to an intuitive interface, I have endeavoured to produce developments which are of use to the non specialist as well as to experts in optical tweezers-a number of which are now available commercially (Section 8.7). These technologies form the basis of a toolkit for working with multi-part probes in optical tweezers, and they should bear fruit in the coming years as a new form of scanning-probe microscopy emerges

    REVERSE INSULATOR DIELECTROPHORESIS: UTILIZING DROPLET MICROENVIRONMENTS FOR DISCERNING MOLECULAR EXPRESSIONS ON CELL SURFACES

    Lab-on-a-chip (LOC) technologies enable the development of portable analysis devices that use small sample and reagent volumes, allow for multiple unit operations, and couple with detectors to achieve high resolution and sensitivity, while having small footprints, low cost, short analysis times, and portability. Droplet microfluidics is a subset of LOCs with the unique benefit of enabling parallel analysis since each droplet can be utilized as an isolated microenvironment. This work explored adaptation of droplet microfluidics into a unique, previously unexplored application where the water/oil interface was harnessed to bend electric field lines within individual droplets for insulator dielectrophoretic (iDEP) characterizations. iDEP polarizes particles/cells within non-uniform electric fields shaped by insulating geometries. We termed this unique combination of droplet microfluidics and iDEP reverse insulator dielectrophoresis (riDEP). This riDEP approach has the potential to protect cell samples from unwanted sample-electrode interactions and decrease the number of required experiments for dielectrophoretic characterization by ~80% by harnessing the parallelization power of droplet microfluidics. Future research opportunities are discussed that could improve this reduction further to 93%. A microfluidic device was designed where aqueous-in-oil droplets were generated in a microchannel T-junction and packed into a microchamber. Reproducible droplets were achieved at the T-junction and were stable over long time periods in the microchamber using Krytox FSH 157 surfactant in the continuous oil FC-40 phase and isotonic salts and dextrose solutions as the dispersed aqueous phase. Surfactant, salts, and dextrose interact at the droplet interface influencing interfacial tension and droplet stability. Results provide foundational knowledge for engineering stable bio- and electro-compatible droplet microfluidic platforms. Electrodes were added to the microdevice to apply an electric field across the droplet packed chamber and explore riDEP responses. Operating windows for droplet stability were shown to depend on surfactant concentration in the oil phase and aqueous phase conductivity, where different voltage/frequency combinations resulted in either stable droplets or electrocoalescence. Experimental results provided a stability map for strategical applied electric field selection to avoid adverse droplet morphological changes while inducing riDEP. Within the microdevice, both polystyrene beads and red blood cells demonstrated weak dielectrophoretic responses, as evidenced by pearl-chain formation, confirming the preliminary feasibility of riDEP as a potential characterization technique. Two additional side projects included an alternative approach to isolate electrode surface reactions from the cell suspension via a hafnium oxide film over the electrodes. In addition, a commercially prevalent water-based polymer emulsion was found to adequately duplicate microchannel and microchamber features such that it could be used for microdevice replication

    JTEC Panel report on electronic manufacturing and packaging in Japan

    This report summarizes the status of electronic manufacturing and packaging technology in Japan in comparison to that in the United States, and its impact on competition in electronic manufacturing in general. In addition to electronic manufacturing technologies, the report covers technology and manufacturing infrastructure, electronics manufacturing and assembly, quality assurance and reliability in the Japanese electronics industry, and successful product realization strategies. The panel found that Japan leads the United States in almost every electronics packaging technology. Japan clearly has achieved a strategic advantage in electronics production and process technologies. Panel members believe that Japanese competitors could be leading U.S. firms by as much as a decade in some electronics process technologies

    Wearable brain computer interfaces with near infrared spectroscopy

    Brain computer interfaces (BCIs) are devices capable of relaying information directly from the brain to a digital device. BCIs have been proposed for a diverse range of clinical and commercial applications; for example, to allow paralyzed subjects to communicate, or to improve machine human interactions. At their core, BCIs need to predict the current state of the brain from variables measuring functional physiology. Functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a non-invasive optical technology able to measure hemodynamic changes in the brain. Along with electroencephalography (EEG), fNIRS is the only technique that allows non-invasive and portable sensing of brain signals. Portability and wearability are very desirable characteristics for BCIs, as they allow them to be used in contexts beyond the laboratory, extending their usability for clinical and commercial applications, as well as for ecologically valid research. Unfortunately, due to limited access to the brain, non-invasive BCIs tend to suffer from low accuracy in their estimation of the brain state. It has been suggested that feedback could increase BCI accuracy as the brain normally relies on sensory feedback to adjust its strategies. Despite this, presenting relevant and accurate feedback in a timely manner can be challenging when processing fNIRS signals, as they tend to be contaminated by physiological and motion artifacts. In this dissertation, I present the hardware and software solutions we proposed and developed to deal with these challenges. First, I will talk about ninjaNIRS, the wearable open source fNIRS device we developed in our laboratory, which could help fNIRS neuroscience and BCIs to become more accessible. Next, I will present an adaptive filter strategy to recover the neural responses from fNIRS signals in real-time, which could be used for feedback and classification in a BCI paradigm. We showed that our wearable fNIRS device can operate autonomously for up to three hours and can be easily carried in a backpack, while offering noise equivalent power comparable to commercial devices. Our adaptive multimodal Kalman filter strategy provided a six-fold increase in contrast to noise ratio of the brain signals compared to standard filtering while being able to process at least 24 channels at 400 samples per second using a standard computer. This filtering strategy, along with visual feedback during a left vs right motion imagery task, showed a relative increase of accuracy of 37.5% compared to not using feedback. With this, we show that it is possible to present relevant feedback for fNIRS BCI in real-time. The findings on this dissertation might help improve the design of future fNIRS BCIs, and thus increase the usability and reliability of this technology
