    Bilinearity rank of the cone of positive polynomials and related cones

    For a proper cone K ⊂ Rn and its dual cone K the complementary slackness condition xT s = 0 defines an n-dimensional manifold C(K) in the space { (x, s) | x ∈ K, s ∈ K^* }. When K is a symmetric cone, this manifold can be described by a set of n bilinear equalities. When K is a symmetric cone, this fact translates to a set of n linearly independent bilinear identities (optimality conditions) satisfied by every (x, s) ∈ C(K). This proves to be very useful when optimizing over such cones, therefore it is natural to look for similar optimality conditions for non-symmetric cones. In this paper we define the bilinearity rank of a cone, which is the number of linearly independent bilinear identities valid for the cone, and describe a linear algebraic technique to bound this quantity. We examine several well-known cones, in particular the cone of positive polynomials P2n+1 and its dual, the closure of the moment cone M2n+1, and compute their bilinearity ranks. We show that there are exactly four linearly independent bilinear identities which hold for all (x,s) ∈ C(P2n+1), regardless of the dimension of the cones. For nonnegative polynomials over an interval or half-line there are only two linearly independent bilinear identities. These results are extended to trigonometric and exponential polynomials

    Structured sparsity-inducing norms through submodular functions

    Sparse methods for supervised learning aim at finding good linear predictors from as few variables as possible, i.e., with small cardinality of their supports. This combinatorial selection problem is often turned into a convex optimization problem by replacing the cardinality function by its convex envelope (tightest convex lower bound), in this case the L1-norm. In this paper, we investigate more general set-functions than the cardinality, that may incorporate prior knowledge or structural constraints which are common in many applications: namely, we show that for nondecreasing submodular set-functions, the corresponding convex envelope can be obtained from its \lova extension, a common tool in submodular analysis. This defines a family of polyhedral norms, for which we provide generic algorithmic tools (subgradients and proximal operators) and theoretical results (conditions for support recovery or high-dimensional inference). By selecting specific submodular functions, we can give a new interpretation to known norms, such as those based on rank-statistics or grouped norms with potentially overlapping groups; we also define new norms, in particular ones that can be used as non-factorial priors for supervised learning

    Prototype selection for parameter estimation in complex models

    Parameter estimation in astrophysics often requires the use of complex physical models. In this paper we study the problem of estimating the parameters that describe star formation history (SFH) in galaxies. Here, high-dimensional spectral data from galaxies are appropriately modeled as linear combinations of physical components, called simple stellar populations (SSPs), plus some nonlinear distortions. Theoretical data for each SSP is produced for a fixed parameter vector via computer modeling. Though the parameters that define each SSP are continuous, optimizing the signal model over a large set of SSPs on a fine parameter grid is computationally infeasible and inefficient. The goal of this study is to estimate the set of parameters that describes the SFH of each galaxy. These target parameters, such as the average ages and chemical compositions of the galaxy's stellar populations, are derived from the SSP parameters and the component weights in the signal model. Here, we introduce a principled approach of choosing a small basis of SSP prototypes for SFH parameter estimation. The basic idea is to quantize the vector space and effective support of the model components. In addition to greater computational efficiency, we achieve better estimates of the SFH target parameters. In simulations, our proposed quantization method obtains a substantial improvement in estimating the target parameters over the common method of employing a parameter grid.     Toward Guaranteed Illumination Models for Non-Convex Objects

    Illumination variation remains a central challenge in object detection and recognition. Existing analyses of illumination variation typically pertain to convex, Lambertian objects, and guarantee quality of approximation in an average case sense. We show that it is possible to build V(vertex)-description convex cone models with worst-case performance guarantees, for non-convex Lambertian objects. Namely, a natural verification test based on the angle to the constructed cone guarantees to accept any image which is sufficiently well-approximated by an image of the object under some admissible lighting condition, and guarantees to reject any image that does not have a sufficiently good approximation. The cone models are generated by sampling point illuminations with sufficient density, which follows from a new perturbation bound for point images in the Lambertian model. As the number of point images required for guaranteed verification may be large, we introduce a new formulation for cone preserving dimensionality reduction, which leverages tools from sparse and low-rank decomposition to reduce the complexity, while controlling the approximation error with respect to the original cone
