Conceptualization and cognitive relativism on result in Mandarin Chinese: the case study of Mandarin Chinese bǎ construction using a cognitive and centering approach
This work adopts Langacker\u27s cognitive grammar approach and addresses the cognitive significance of result in Mandarin Chinese, as expressed in resultant construals in the Mandarin Chinese bă construction: X bă Y Z. I identify the semantic prime of result in Mandarin Chinese, and discuss its role in the resultative verbal compound construction, the V-de-EXT resultative construction, and the bèi construction, with particular focus on the bă construction. I provide evidence for the resultant nature of segment Z in the bă construction in (1) aspectual markers, (2) resultative suffixes, (3) resultative verbal compounds, (4) locative complements, (5) directional complements, (6) the double object gěi \u27give\u27 construction, (7) inalienable possession; (8) durative and frequentative markers; and (9) the regard predicate. I consider the semantic category of result in the Mandarin Chinese bă construction to be grounded in the conceptualization of the morpheme bă \u27to take, to hold.\u27 The manipulative sense of holding an object is transformed into a metaphorical resultative sense of holding a grammatical event. Comparisons with the English get/have + p.p. construction and the German inseparable prefixes reveal the shared cross-linguistic nature of agency and result. I utilize Grosz, Joshi, and Weinstein\u27s (1995) centering discourse approach to analyze the Mandarin Chinese bă construction X bă Y Z, and determine that segment Y is the backward-looking center. Prince\u27s assumed familiarity accounts for the cognitive constraints of segment Y. I ascribe the cognitive significance of result to the claim of construal differences. The 7th International Conference of the Gruppo di Studi sulla Comunicazione Parlata, dedicated to the memory of Claire Blanche-Benveniste, chose as its main theme Speech and Corpora. The wide international origin of the 235 authors from 21 countries and 95 institutions led to papers on many different languages. The 89 papers of this volume reflect the themes of the conference: spoken corpora compilation and annotation, with the technological connected fields; the relation between prosody and pragmatics; speech pathologies; and different papers on phonetics, speech and linguistic analysis, pragmatics and sociolinguistics. Syntactic change in Xining Mandarin
PhD ThesisThis dissertation discusses the Xining Mandarin dialect (spoken in Qinghai province,
northwest China), a variety in which head-final syntax has emerged on the model of local
Mongolic languages and Tibetan. The underlying socio-historical scenario is explored in
detail and analysed as a case of ‘fort creolization’ (Bickerton 1988). An overview is then
provided of how head-final categories emerged in the dialect, namely through reanalysing
Chinese form-meaning units to fulfil functions found in the substrate languages, with
comparatively little reordering of grammatical devices inherent to Chinese or outright
borrowing of substrate forms. The relevant changes are discussed in relation to Heine and
Kuteva’s (2005) model of contact-induced grammaticalization and findings from creole
studies.
Detailed discussion of the dialect’s clausal syntax focuses on aspect marking, tense/mood
marking, non-lexical functions of SAY and object scrambling. With regard to the aspectual
system, an account is proposed of ZHE, which is typologically unusual in showing
imperfective/perfective polysemy. Tense and modality is then considered with regard to the
sentential particle lia, and its future marking function is seen to be conditioned by the
aspectual class of the sentence, providing evidence of aspectually sensitive tenses (de Swart
1998) in Chinese. In terms of non-lexical functions of SAY, a range of clause-final uses are
discussed, including as a complementizer and volitional mood marker, whilst discourse
marking uses of SAY are interpreted in light of Traugott’s (1995, 2010) notion of
(inter)subjectification.
Finally, object fronting in the dialect is shown to possess the properties of Japanese style
scrambling, despite the absence of this type of movement across other Chinese dialects. Its
existence in the Xining dialect, where phrase-structure change has occurred from head-initial
to head-final, is argued to provide broad support for the correlation between head-final syntax
and scrambling formalized by the Generalized Holmberg Constraint (Wallenberg 2009).The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC
Pragmatics and Prosody
Most of the papers collected in this book resulted from presentations and discussions undertaken during the V Lablita Workshop that took place at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, on August 23-25, 2011. The workshop was held in conjunction with the II Brazilian Seminar on Pragmatics and Prosody. The guiding themes for the joint event were illocution, modality, attitude, information patterning and speech annotation. Thus, all papers presented here are concerned with theoretical and methodological issues related to the study of speech. Among the papers in this volume, there are different theoretical orientations, which are mirrored through the methodological designs of studies pursued. However, all papers are based on the analysis of actual speech, be it from corpora or from experimental contexts trying to emulate natural speech. Prosody is the keyword that comes out from all the papers in this publication, which indicates the high standing of this category in relation to studies that are geared towards the understanding of major elements that are constitutive of the structuring of speech

Basic verbs, i.e. very common verbs that typically denote physical movements, locations, states or actions, undergo various semantic shifts and acquire different secondary uses. In extreme cases, the distribution of secondary uses grows so general that they are regarded as auxiliary verbs (go and to be going to), phase verbs (turn, grow), etc. ese uses are usually well-documented by grammars and language textbooks, and so are idiomatic expressions (phraseologisms) in dictionaries. ere is, however, a grey area in between, which is extremely difficult to learn for non-native speakers. is consists of secondary uses with limited collocability, in particular light verb constructions, and secondary meanings that only get activated under particular morphosyntactic conditions. e basic-verb secondary uses and constructions are usually semantically transparent, such that they do not pose understanding problems, but they are generally unpredictable and language-specific, such that they easily become an issue in non-native text production. In this thesis, Swedish basic verbs are approached from the contrastive point of view of an advanced Czech learner of Swedish. A selection of Swedish constructions with basic verbs is explored. e observations result in a proposal for the structure of a machine-readable Swedish-Czech...Základní slovesa (basic verbs), tj. frekventovaná významová slovesa, jež zpravidla popisují fyzický pohyb, umístění, stav, nebo děj, procházejí řadou sémantických posunů, díky kterým se používají k vyjádření druhotných, přenesených významů. V krajních případech se dané sloveso stává pomocným, způsobovým, nebo fázovým slovesem a přestávají pro ně platit kolokační omezení, jež se vztahují na sloveso užité v jeho primárním (tj. doslovném) významu. Tato užití sloves bývají většinou dobře dokumentována v gramatikách i učebnicích, stejně jako kvalitní slovníky podávají podrobnou informaci o užití těchto sloves v ustálených frazeologických spojeních. Mezi plně gramatikalizovaným užitím na jedné straně a idiomatickým, frazeologickým užitím na druhé straně však existuje celá škála užití základních sloves v přenesených významech, jejíž zvládnutí je pro nerodilého mluvčího značně obtížné: užití v přeneseném významu, jež mají omezenou kolokabilitu. To jsou především verbonominální konstrukce někdy nazývané analytické predikáty (light verb constructions), ale také užití, která za určitých omezených morfosyntaktických podmínek (např. pouze v negaci) aktivují abstraktní sémantické rysy u jiných predikátů, např. zesilují význam, nebo implikují, že daný děj již trvá dlouho, a podobně. A Corpus-Based Cross-Linguistic Study
Effective communication requires texts to be organised into a coherent discourse structure. But
languages vary considerably in how they do this, posing a challenge for effective intercultural
communication. Instead of relying on our own preferred persuasion style to be the most
effective, we need to take into consideration that people with different linguistic and cultural
backgrounds do not necessarily employ the same linguistic means in similar communication
situations. This is of particular importance in a business context, and a profound understanding
of cross-linguistic differences in the organisation of argumentative texts is needed.
In order to address this challenge, this thesis presents a study of structural characteristics in
argumentative texts across three different languages. The aim of the study is to examine some of
the linguistic means that writers of different languages employ when creating persuasive
discourses. The study is based on 150 Danish, English and Italian speeches held by Members of
the European Parliament in their native language.
The linguistic means under investigation are conceptualised as belonging to three different
structural domains which account for different ways of linking discourse units in a text: a
syntactically organised text structure, a rhetorically organised discourse structure and an
information packaging organised information structure. The structural domains are defined from
a cognitive-functional perspective and juxtaposed into a single analytical framework.
The analyses show that writers across the three languages generally use the same rhetorical
relations to build up persuasive discourses. But the analyses also reveal that the Danish, English
and Italian writers textualise relations differently. The Danish writers use almost exclusively
finite verb forms in coordinate and subordinate structures. The English writers tend to avoid
explicating the rhetorical relations between discourse units, and the Italian writers tend to
include more units inside the same sentence than the Danish and English writers.
The analyses also suggest that the cross-linguistic differences in textualisation can be
correlated with certain persuasive strategies. The Danish writers tend to persuade by analogy,
making use of typical features from narratives. The English writers make use of presentational
persuasion style, involving themselves in a more personal way than the Danish and Italian
writers. And lastly, the Italian writers make use of typical features from quasilogical persuasion
style, adopting a formal register and argumentation.
This thesis formulates an analytical framework for a systematic investigation of the structure
of discourse across languages, pairing theories and methods from the two parallel disciplines of
linguistics and rhetoric in order to gain more insights into effective intercultural communication
