As a collection grows to more than a few hundred images, the need for search becomes crucial. This thesis is addressing the problem of retrieving from a small database a particular image previously seen by the user. This thesis combines current findings in cognitive science with the knowledge of previous image retrieval systems to present a novel approach to content based image retrieval and indexing. We focus on algorithms which abstract away information from images in the same terms that a viewer abstracts information from an image. The focus in Imagina is on the matching of regions, instead of the matching of global measures. Multiple representations, focusing on shape and color, are used for every region. The matches of individual regions are combined using a saliency metric that accounts for differences in the distributions of metrics.     A Method Of Content-based Image Retrieval For The Generation Of Image Mosaics

    An image mosaic is an artistic work that uses a number of smaller images creatively combined together to form another larger image. Each building block image, or tessera, has its own distinctive and meaningful content, but when viewed from a distance the tesserae come together to form an aesthetically pleasing montage. This work presents the design and implementation of MosaiX, a computer software system that generates these image mosaics automatically. To control the image mosaic creation process, several parameters are used within the system. Each parameter affects the overall mosaic quality, as well as required processing time, in its own unique way. A detailed analysis is performed to evaluate each parameter individually. Additionally, this work proposes two novel ways by which to evaluate the quality of an image mosaic in a quantitative way. One method focuses on the perceptual color accuracy of the mosaic reproduction, while the other concentrates on edge replication. Both measures include preprocessing to take into account the unique visual features present in an image mosaic. Doing so minimizes quality penalization due the inherent properties of an image mosaic that make them visually appealing

    An Information Theoretic Approach to Content Based Image Retrieval.

    We propose an information theoretic approach to the representation and comparison of color features in digital images to handle various problems in the area of content-based image retrieval. The interpretation of color histograms as joint probability density functions enables the use of a wide range of concepts from information theory to be considered in the extraction of color features from images and the computation of similarity between pairs of images. The entropy of an image is a measure of the randomness of the color distribution in an image. Rather than replacing color histograms as an image representation, we demonstrate that image entropy can be used to augment color histograms for more efficient image retrieval. We propose an indexing algorithm in which image entropy is used to drastically reduce the search space for color histogram computations. Our experimental tests applied to an image database with 10,000 images suggest that the image entropy-based indexing algorithm is scalable for image retrieval of large image databases. We also proposed a new similarity measure called the maximum relative entropy measure for comparing image feature vectors that represent probability density functions. This measure is an improvement of the Kullback-Leibler number in that it is non-negative and satisfies the identity and symmetry axioms. We also propose a new usability paradigm called Query By Example Sets (QBES) that allows users, particularly novice users, the ability to express queries in terms of multiple images

    Effective Method of Image Retrieval Using Markov Random Field with Hough Transform

    The emergence of multimedia technology and the rapidly expanding image collections on the database have attracted significant research efforts in providing tools for effective retrieval and management of visual data. The need to find a desired image from a large collection. Image retrieval is the field of study concerned with searching and retrieving digital image from a collection of database .In real images, regions are often homogenous; neighboring pixels usually have similar properties (shape, color, texture) Markov Random Field (MRF) is a probabilistic model which captures such contextual constraints. Hough Transform method is used for detecting lines in binary images. Spatially extended patterns are transformed to produce compact features in a parameter space. The main advantages of using the HT is, it treats each edge point independently this means that the parallel processing of all points is possible which is suitable for real-time applications
