    A Comparative Analysis of Phytovolume Estimation Methods Based on UAV-Photogrammetry and Multispectral Imagery in a Mediterranean Forest

    Management and control operations are crucial for preventing forest fires, especially in Mediterranean forest areas with dry climatic periods. One of them is prescribed fires, in which the biomass fuel present in the controlled plot area must be accurately estimated. The most used methods for estimating biomass are time-consuming and demand too much manpower. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) carrying multispectral sensors can be used to carry out accurate indirect measurements of terrain and vegetation morphology and their radiometric characteristics. Based on the UAV-photogrammetric project products, four estimators of phytovolume were compared in a Mediterranean forest area, all obtained using the difference between a digital surface model (DSM) and a digital terrain model (DTM). The DSM was derived from a UAV-photogrammetric project based on the structure from a motion algorithm. Four different methods for obtaining a DTM were used based on an unclassified dense point cloud produced through a UAV-photogrammetric project (FFU), an unsupervised classified dense point cloud (FFC), a multispectral vegetation index (FMI), and a cloth simulation filter (FCS). Qualitative and quantitative comparisons determined the ability of the phytovolume estimators for vegetation detection and occupied volume. The results show that there are no significant differences in surface vegetation detection between all the pairwise possible comparisons of the four estimators at a 95% confidence level, but FMI presented the best kappa value (0.678) in an error matrix analysis with reference data obtained from photointerpretation and supervised classification. Concerning the accuracy of phytovolume estimation, only FFU and FFC presented differences higher than two standard deviations in a pairwise comparison, and FMI presented the best RMSE (12.3 m) when the estimators were compared to 768 observed data points grouped in four 500 m2 sample plots. The FMI was the best phytovolume estimator of the four compared for low vegetation height in a Mediterranean forest. The use of FMI based on UAV data provides accurate phytovolume estimations that can be applied on several environment management activities, including wildfire prevention. Multitemporal phytovolume estimations based on FMI could help to model the forest resources evolution in a very realistic way

    Airborne photogrammetry and LIDAR for DSM extraction and 3D change detection over an urban area : a comparative study

    A digital surface model (DSM) extracted from stereoscopic aerial images, acquired in March 2000, is compared with a DSM derived from airborne light detection and ranging (lidar) data collected in July 2009. Three densely built-up study areas in the city centre of Ghent, Belgium, are selected, each covering approximately 0.4 km(2). The surface models, generated from the two different 3D acquisition methods, are compared qualitatively and quantitatively as to what extent they are suitable in modelling an urban environment, in particular for the 3D reconstruction of buildings. Then the data sets, which are acquired at two different epochs t(1) and t(2), are investigated as to what extent 3D (building) changes can be detected and modelled over the time interval. A difference model, generated by pixel-wise subtracting of both DSMs, indicates changes in elevation. Filters are proposed to differentiate 'real' building changes from false alarms provoked by model noise, outliers, vegetation, etc. A final 3D building change model maps all destructed and newly constructed buildings within the time interval t(2) - t(1). Based on the change model, the surface and volume of the building changes can be quantified

    Airborne LiDAR for DEM generation: some critical issues

    Airborne LiDAR is one of the most effective and reliable means of terrain data collection. Using LiDAR data for DEM generation is becoming a standard practice in spatial related areas. However, the effective processing of the raw LiDAR data and the generation of an efficient and high-quality DEM remain big challenges. This paper reviews the recent advances of airborne LiDAR systems and the use of LiDAR data for DEM generation, with special focus on LiDAR data filters, interpolation methods, DEM resolution, and LiDAR data reduction. Separating LiDAR points into ground and non-ground is the most critical and difficult step for DEM generation from LiDAR data. Commonly used and most recently developed LiDAR filtering methods are presented. Interpolation methods and choices of suitable interpolator and DEM resolution for LiDAR DEM generation are discussed in detail. In order to reduce the data redundancy and increase the efficiency in terms of storage and manipulation, LiDAR data reduction is required in the process of DEM generation. Feature specific elements such as breaklines contribute significantly to DEM quality. Therefore, data reduction should be conducted in such a way that critical elements are kept while less important elements are removed. Given the highdensity characteristic of LiDAR data, breaklines can be directly extracted from LiDAR data. Extraction of breaklines and integration of the breaklines into DEM generation are presented

    Ground Filtering Algorithms for Airborne LiDAR Data: A Review of Critical Issues

    This paper reviews LiDAR ground filtering algorithms used in the process of creating Digital Elevation Models. We discuss critical issues for the development and application of LiDAR ground filtering algorithms, including filtering procedures for different feature types, and criteria for study site selection, accuracy assessment, and algorithm classification. This review highlights three feature types for which current ground filtering algorithms are suboptimal, and which can be improved upon in future studies: surfaces with rough terrain or discontinuous slope, dense forest areas that laser beams cannot penetrate, and regions with low vegetation that is often ignored by ground filters

    Extraction of Vehicle Groups in Airborne Lidar Point Clouds with Two-Level Point Processes

    In this paper we present a new object based hierarchical model for joint probabilistic extraction of vehicles and groups of corresponding vehicles - called traffic segments - in airborne Lidar point clouds collected from dense urban areas. Firstly, the 3-D point set is classified into terrain, vehicle, roof, vegetation and clutter classes. Then the points with the corresponding class labels and echo strength (i.e. intensity) values are projected to the ground. In the obtained 2-D class and intensity maps we approximate the top view projections of vehicles by rectangles. Since our tasks are simultaneously the extraction of the rectangle population which describes the position, size and orientation of the vehicles and grouping the vehicles into the traffic segments, we propose a hierarchical, Two-Level Marked Point Process (L2MPP) model for the problem. The output vehicle and traffic segment configurations are extracted by an iterative stochastic optimization algorithm. We have tested the proposed method with real data of a discrete return Lidar sensor providing up to four range measurements for each laser pulse. Using manually annotated Ground Truth information on a data set containing 1009 vehicles, we provide quantitative evaluation results showing that the L2MPP model surpasses two earlier grid-based approaches, a 3-D point-cloud-based process and a single layer MPP solution. The accuracy of the proposed method measured in F-rate is 97% at object level, 83% at pixel level and 95% at group level

    Characterising the ocean frontier : a review of marine geomorphometry

    Geomorphometry, the science that quantitatively describes terrains, has traditionally focused on the investigation of terrestrial landscapes. However, the dramatic increase in the availability of digital bathymetric data and the increasing ease by which geomorphometry can be investigated using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has prompted interest in employing geomorphometric techniques to investigate the marine environment. Over the last decade, a suite of geomorphometric techniques have been applied (e.g. terrain attributes, feature extraction, automated classification) to investigate the characterisation of seabed terrain from the coastal zone to the deep sea. Geomorphometric techniques are, however, not as varied, nor as extensively applied, in marine as they are in terrestrial environments. This is at least partly due to difficulties associated with capturing, classifying, and validating terrain characteristics underwater. There is nevertheless much common ground between terrestrial and marine geomorphology applications and it is important that, in developing the science and application of marine geomorphometry, we build on the lessons learned from terrestrial studies. We note, however, that not all terrestrial solutions can be adopted by marine geomorphometric studies since the dynamic, four- dimensional nature of the marine environment causes its own issues, boosting the need for a dedicated scientific effort in marine geomorphometry. This contribution offers the first comprehensive review of marine geomorphometry to date. It addresses all the five main steps of geomorphometry, from data collection to the application of terrain attributes and features. We focus on how these steps are relevant to marine geomorphometry and also highlight differences from terrestrial geomorphometry. We conclude with recommendations and reflections on the future of marine geomorphometry.peer-reviewe

    Building Footprint Extraction from LiDAR Data and Imagery Information

    This study presents an automatic method for regularisation of building outlines. Initially, building segments are extracted using a new fusion method. Data- and model-driven approaches are then combined to generate approximate building polygons. The core part of the method includes a novel data-driven algorithm based on likelihood equation derived from the geometrical properties of a building. Finally, the Gauss-Helmert and Gauss-Markov models adjustment are implemented and modified for regularisation of building outlines considering orthogonality constraints

    Robust Modular Feature-Based Terrain-Aided Visual Navigation and Mapping

    The visual feature-based Terrain-Aided Navigation (TAN) system presented in this thesis addresses the problem of constraining inertial drift introduced into the location estimate of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in GPS-denied environment. The presented TAN system utilises salient visual features representing semantic or human-interpretable objects (roads, forest and water boundaries) from onboard aerial imagery and associates them to a database of reference features created a-priori, through application of the same feature detection algorithms to satellite imagery. Correlation of the detected features with the reference features via a series of the robust data association steps allows a localisation solution to be achieved with a finite absolute bound precision defined by the certainty of the reference dataset. The feature-based Visual Navigation System (VNS) presented in this thesis was originally developed for a navigation application using simulated multi-year satellite image datasets. The extension of the system application into the mapping domain, in turn, has been based on the real (not simulated) flight data and imagery. In the mapping study the full potential of the system, being a versatile tool for enhancing the accuracy of the information derived from the aerial imagery has been demonstrated. Not only have the visual features, such as road networks, shorelines and water bodies, been used to obtain a position ’fix’, they have also been used in reverse for accurate mapping of vehicles detected on the roads into an inertial space with improved precision. Combined correction of the geo-coding errors and improved aircraft localisation formed a robust solution to the defense mapping application. A system of the proposed design will provide a complete independent navigation solution to an autonomous UAV and additionally give it object tracking capability

    Cuantificación del efecto de la densidad de datos de LiDAR en la calidad del DEM

    LiDAR sensors capture three-dimensional point clouds with high accuracy and density; since they are regularly obtained, interpolation methods are required to generate a regular grid. Given the large size of its files, processing becomes a challenge for researchers with not very powerful computer stations. This work aims to balance the sampling density and the volume of data, preserving the sensitivity of representation of complex topographic shapes as a function of three surface descriptors: slope, curvature, and roughness. This study explores the effect of the density of LiDAR data on the accuracy of the Digital Elevation Model (DEM), using a ground point cloud of 32 million measurements obtained from a LiDAR flight over a complex topographic area of 156 ha. Digital elevation models with different relative densities to the total point dataset were produced (100, 75, 50, 25, 10, and 1 % and at different grid sizes 23, 27, 33, 46, 73, and 230cm). Accuracy was evaluated using the Inverse Distance Weighted and Kriging interpolation algorithms, obtaining 72 surfaces from which their error statistics were calculated: root mean square error, mean absolute error, mean square error, and prediction effectiveness index; these were used to evaluate the quality of the results in contrast with validation data corresponding to 10 % of the original sample. The results indicated that Kriging was the most efficient algorithm, reducing data to 1 % without statistically significant differences with the original dataset, and curvature was the morphometric parameter with the most significant negative impact on interpolation accuracy.El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo equilibrar la densidad de muestreo y el volumen de datos al preservar la sensibilidad de representación de formas topográficas complejas en función de tres descriptores de superficie: pendiente, curvatura y rugosidad. Se explora el efecto de la densidad de los datos de LiDAR sobre la precisión del Modelo Digital de Elevación (DEM) mediante una nube de puntos terrestres de 32 millones de mediciones obtenidas de un vuelo LiDAR sobre un área topográfica compleja de 156 ha. Se produjeron modelos digitales de elevación con diferentes densidades relativas al conjunto de datos de puntos totales (100%, 75%, 50%, 25%, 10% y 1% y en diferentes tamaños de cuadrícula de 23cm, 27cm, 33cm, 46cm, 73cm y 230cm). La precisión se evaluó mediante los algoritmos de interpolación de distancia inversa ponderada y de Kriging, con lo que se obtuvo 72 superficies a partir de las cuales se calcularon las estadísticas de error: error cuadrático medio, error medio absoluto, error cuadrático medio e índice de efectividad de predicción. Estos se utilizaron para evaluar la calidad de los resultados en contraste con los datos de validación correspondientes al 10% de la muestra original. Los resultados indicaron que Kriging fue el algoritmo más eficiente al reducir los datos al 1% sin diferencias estadísticamente significativas con el conjunto de datos original, y la curvatura fue el parámetro morfométrico con el impacto negativo más significativo en la precisión de la interpolación
