Extracting Formal Models from Normative Texts
We are concerned with the analysis of normative texts - documents based on
the deontic notions of obligation, permission, and prohibition. Our goal is to
make queries about these notions and verify that a text satisfies certain
properties concerning causality of actions and timing constraints. This
requires taking the original text and building a representation (model) of it
in a formal language, in our case the C-O Diagram formalism. We present an
experimental, semi-automatic aid that helps to bridge the gap between a
normative text in natural language and its C-O Diagram representation. Our
approach consists of using dependency structures obtained from the
state-of-the-art Stanford Parser, and applying our own rules and heuristics in
order to extract the relevant components. The result is a tabular data
structure where each sentence is split into suitable fields, which can then be
converted into a C-O Diagram. The process is not fully automatic however, and
some post-editing is generally required of the user. We apply our tool and
perform experiments on documents from different domains, and report an initial
evaluation of the accuracy and feasibility of our approach.Comment: Extended version of conference paper at the 21st International

A Web-Based Tool for Analysing Normative Documents in English
Our goal is to use formal methods to analyse normative documents written in
English, such as privacy policies and service-level agreements. This requires
the combination of a number of different elements, including information
extraction from natural language, formal languages for model representation,
and an interface for property specification and verification. We have worked on
a collection of components for this task: a natural language extraction tool, a
suitable formalism for representing such documents, an interface for building
models in this formalism, and methods for answering queries asked of a given
model. In this work, each of these concerns is brought together in a web-based
tool, providing a single interface for analysing normative texts in English.
Through the use of a running example, we describe each component and
demonstrate the workflow established by our tool
Towards a Semantic-based Approach for Modeling Regulatory Documents in Building Industry
Regulations in the Building Industry are becoming increasingly complex and
involve more than one technical area. They cover products, components and
project implementation. They also play an important role to ensure the quality
of a building, and to minimize its environmental impact. In this paper, we are
particularly interested in the modeling of the regulatory constraints derived
from the Technical Guides issued by CSTB and used to validate Technical
Assessments. We first describe our approach for modeling regulatory constraints
in the SBVR language, and formalizing them in the SPARQL language. Second, we
describe how we model the processes of compliance checking described in the
CSTB Technical Guides. Third, we show how we implement these processes to
assist industrials in drafting Technical Documents in order to acquire a
Technical Assessment; a compliance report is automatically generated to explain
the compliance or noncompliance of this Technical Documents
Improving automation standards via semantic modelling: Application to ISA88
Standardization is essential for automation. Extensibility, scalability, and reusability are important features for automation software that rely in the efficient modelling of the addressed systems. The work presented here is from the ongoing development of a methodology for semi-automatic ontology construction methodology from technical documents. The main aim of this work is to systematically check the consistency of technical documents and support the improvement of technical document consistency. The formalization of conceptual models and the subsequent writing of technical standards are simultaneously analyzed, and guidelines proposed for application to future technical standards. Three paradigms are discussed for the development of domain ontologies from technical documents, starting from the current state of the art, continuing with the intermediate method presented and used in this paper, and ending with the suggested paradigm for the future. The ISA88 Standard is taken as a representative case study. Linguistic techniques from the semi-automatic ontology construction methodology is applied to the ISA88 Standard and different modelling and standardization aspects that are worth sharing with the automation community is addressed. Integrating natural language and formal analysis for legal documents
Although much research has gone into natural language legal document analysis, practical solutions to support legal document drafting
and reasoning are still limited in number and functionality. However given the textual basis of law there is much potential for NLP
techniques to aid in the context of drafting legal documents, in particular contracts. Furthermore, there is a body of work focusing on
the formal semantics of norms and legal notions which has direct applications in analysis of such documents. In this paper we present
our attempt to use several off-the-shelf NLP techniques to provide a more intelligent contract editing tool to lawyers. We exploit these
techniques to extract information from contract clauses to allow intelligent browsing of the contract. We use this surface analysis to
bridge the gap between the English text of a contract to its formal representation, which is then amenable to automated deduction,
specifically it allows us to identify conflicts in the contract.peer-reviewe
Theory of Regulatory Compliance for Requirements Engineering
Regulatory compliance is increasingly being addressed in the practice of
requirements engineering as a main stream concern. This paper points out a gap
in the theoretical foundations of regulatory compliance, and presents a theory
that states (i) what it means for requirements to be compliant, (ii) the
compliance problem, i.e., the problem that the engineer should resolve in order
to verify whether requirements are compliant, and (iii) testable hypotheses
(predictions) about how compliance of requirements is verified. The theory is
instantiated by presenting a requirements engineering framework that implements
its principles, and is exemplified on a real-world case study.Comment: 16 page
Legal compliance by design (LCbD) and through design (LCtD) : preliminary survey
1st Workshop on Technologies for Regulatory Compliance co-located with the 30th International Conference on Legal Knowledge and Information Systems (JURIX 2017). The purpose of this paper is twofold: (i) carrying out a preliminary survey of the literature and research projects on Compliance by Design (CbD); and (ii) clarifying the double process of (a) extending business managing techniques to other regulatory fields, and (b) converging trends in legal theory, legal technology and Artificial Intelligence. The paper highlights the connections and differences we found across different domains and proposals. We distinguish three different policydriven types of CbD: (i) business, (ii) regulatory, (iii) and legal. The recent deployment of ethical views, and the implementation of general principles of privacy and data protection lead to the conclusion that, in order to appropriately define legal compliance, Compliance through Design (CtD) should be differentiated from CbD
