Bipartite Flat-Graph Network for Nested Named Entity Recognition
In this paper, we propose a novel bipartite flat-graph network (BiFlaG) for
nested named entity recognition (NER), which contains two subgraph modules: a
flat NER module for outermost entities and a graph module for all the entities
located in inner layers. Bidirectional LSTM (BiLSTM) and graph convolutional
network (GCN) are adopted to jointly learn flat entities and their inner
dependencies. Different from previous models, which only consider the
unidirectional delivery of information from innermost layers to outer ones (or
outside-to-inside), our model effectively captures the bidirectional
interaction between them. We first use the entities recognized by the flat NER
module to construct an entity graph, which is fed to the next graph module. The
richer representation learned from graph module carries the dependencies of
inner entities and can be exploited to improve outermost entity predictions.
Experimental results on three standard nested NER datasets demonstrate that our
BiFlaG outperforms previous state-of-the-art models.Comment: Accepted by ACL202
A large multilingual and multi-domain dataset for recommender systems
This paper presents a multi-domain interests dataset to train and test Recommender Systems, and the methodology to create the dataset
from Twitter messages in English and Italian. The English dataset includes an average of 90 preferences per user on music, books,
movies, celebrities, sport, politics and much more, for about half million users. Preferences are either extracted from messages of
users who use Spotify, Goodreads and other similar content sharing platforms, or induced from their ”topical” friends, i.e., followees
representing an interest rather than a social relation between peers. In addition, preferred items are matched with Wikipedia articles
describing them. This unique feature of our dataset provides a mean to derive a semantic categorization of the preferred items, exploiting
available semantic resources linked to Wikipedia such as the Wikipedia Category Graph, DBpedia, BabelNet and others
Semantic metrics
In the context of the Semantic Web, many ontology-related operations, e.g. ontology ranking, segmentation, alignment, articulation, reuse, evaluation, can be boiled down to one fundamental operation: computing the similarity and?or dissimilarity among ontological entities, and in some cases among ontologies themselves. In this paper, we review standard metrics for computing distance measures and we propose a series of semantic metrics. We give a formal account of semantic metrics drawn from a variety of research disciplines, and enrich them with semantics based on standard Description Logic constructs. We argue that concept-based metrics can be aggregated to produce numeric distances at ontology-level and we speculate on the usability of our ideas through potential areas

Context-awareness for mobile sensing: a survey and future directions
The evolution of smartphones together with increasing computational power have empowered developers to create innovative context-aware applications for recognizing user related social and cognitive activities in any situation and at any location. The existence and awareness of the context provides the capability of being conscious of physical environments or situations around mobile device users. This allows network services to respond proactively and intelligently based on such awareness. The key idea behind context-aware applications is to encourage users to collect, analyze and share local sensory knowledge in the purpose for a large scale community use by creating a smart network. The desired network is capable of making autonomous logical decisions to actuate environmental objects, and also assist individuals. However, many open challenges remain, which are mostly arisen due to the middleware services provided in mobile devices have limited resources in terms of power, memory and bandwidth. Thus, it becomes critically important to study how the drawbacks can be elaborated and resolved, and at the same time better understand the opportunities for the research community to contribute to the context-awareness. To this end, this paper surveys the literature over the period of 1991-2014 from the emerging concepts to applications of context-awareness in mobile platforms by providing up-to-date research and future research directions. Moreover, it points out the challenges faced in this regard and enlighten them by proposing possible solutions
Knowledge-aware Complementary Product Representation Learning
Learning product representations that reflect complementary relationship
plays a central role in e-commerce recommender system. In the absence of the
product relationships graph, which existing methods rely on, there is a need to
detect the complementary relationships directly from noisy and sparse customer
purchase activities. Furthermore, unlike simple relationships such as
similarity, complementariness is asymmetric and non-transitive. Standard usage
of representation learning emphasizes on only one set of embedding, which is
problematic for modelling such properties of complementariness. We propose
using knowledge-aware learning with dual product embedding to solve the above
challenges. We encode contextual knowledge into product representation by
multi-task learning, to alleviate the sparsity issue. By explicitly modelling
with user bias terms, we separate the noise of customer-specific preferences
from the complementariness. Furthermore, we adopt the dual embedding framework
to capture the intrinsic properties of complementariness and provide geometric
interpretation motivated by the classic separating hyperplane theory. Finally,
we propose a Bayesian network structure that unifies all the components, which
also concludes several popular models as special cases. The proposed method
compares favourably to state-of-art methods, in downstream classification and
recommendation tasks. We also develop an implementation that scales efficiently
to a dataset with millions of items and customers
Deep Memory Networks for Attitude Identification
We consider the task of identifying attitudes towards a given set of entities
from text. Conventionally, this task is decomposed into two separate subtasks:
target detection that identifies whether each entity is mentioned in the text,
either explicitly or implicitly, and polarity classification that classifies
the exact sentiment towards an identified entity (the target) into positive,
negative, or neutral.
Instead, we show that attitude identification can be solved with an
end-to-end machine learning architecture, in which the two subtasks are
interleaved by a deep memory network. In this way, signals produced in target
detection provide clues for polarity classification, and reversely, the
predicted polarity provides feedback to the identification of targets.
Moreover, the treatments for the set of targets also influence each other --
the learned representations may share the same semantics for some targets but
vary for others. The proposed deep memory network, the AttNet, outperforms
methods that do not consider the interactions between the subtasks or those
among the targets, including conventional machine learning methods and the
state-of-the-art deep learning models.Comment: Accepted to WSDM'1
